Nice! Was lookin' forward to this one.

I'm glad people are picking up on this film at last! A couple of reaction channels have found it recently. Great movie that The Nice Guys was a spiritual sequel to.

dieselbeast

I gave this movie a solid 30 mins a while back and I was bored lol but ima gonna give it one more chance with you two beautiful humans lol hopefully by the 45 minute mark I'm hooked lol well see 😁

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Fun fact how the title is what some international markets called James Bond when it came out in the 60s lol.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Hi, hope you're having a great new year! I'd like to suggest two movies for you: 'Last Night in Soho' and 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' Three Billboards was filmed in my hometown so I'm a little biased towards it but I think you would love it! Have a brilliant day!

Tay Schumaker

Had a feeling this might be coming eventually. Glad you all decided to do it.

JediLounger

If you guys want to see what Shane Black was riffing on/leaning into when writing the script and creating RDJ’s character you should check out Chinatown (1974).

Johnny Liu

this isn't necessarily a recommendation for the channel, but if you ever have a spare few hours definitely check out the films directed by Robert Downey Sr. Outsider art at some of its finest.

Tay Schumaker

Best Val Kilmer performance, this or Tombstone?

Elder Lyons

Oh look! second place from the Super Trooper poll where a bunch of people cried foul cause this didnt win so there for it must mean it would never be watched! which im guessing next Thursday will be Lost in Translation for all the people that lost their shit cause Blair Witch Won and Lost, lost.

Keith Jones

I work in Software and it has been a running gag in our office for more than a decade to respond to someones mistake with "Who taught you Math?"

sarCC

WooHoo!

Patrick

Haha I was about to say the same thing. Bunch of whiny babies.

Spacedone

Last Night in Soho is one of those films that was criminally overlooked by most of the cinema audience.

REDR58

RDJ was sentenced to a 3-year prison term for missing court-ordered drug testing and served a total of 15 months and then parole / probation. You should watch RDJ in “Less Than Zero” from 1987 and “Chaplin” from 1992.

Odd Thomas

Now you need to watch The Long Kiss Goodnight

Ph4ZeD

Enjoyed the film but the tone seems a bit inconsistent, the stuff about the father abusing his daughter really didn't seem to fit the tone of the film

Odd Thomas

Kilmer mellowed with age but he was apparently a real dick when he was younger. I know Schumacher hated working with him on Batman Forever.

Tay Schumaker

I've seen this movie so many times and I think it's the first time I noticed he was missing the finger in the little epilogue with him and Perry at the end

Skyruff

Ooh, tough question. I would say… The character in Tombstone was on the page the better of the two. Val did well with both roles but he had more to reach for in Kiss Kiss. In the end I say tie.

NotlobParrot

GREAT reaction. I love when Cinebinge gives me a BANGER on Thursdays!! Makes it feel like Friday :)

sarCC

The wandering into a stranger's home while under-the-influence scene was a reference that shocked me into laughter. RDJ apparently has a very good sense of humor.

ExtraBigAssTaco

For more fun with Val Kilmer, check out The Saint.

Keen7981

If you're interested in another kind of bonkers crime film, I highly recommend The Boondock Saints!

Monica Alarcon

Guys pleeeeeeease do Top Secret... Seminal Val Kilmer movie...

Eddy V Ruiz II

As a child of the 80's, Val Kilmer is one of my favorite actors and the star of movies i go back to over and over. Real Genius, Top Secret (mentioned here a lot), Willow, Tombstone, and The Saint. This got added to the list right after viewing. When this came out my fav film of that year was Mr & Mrs Smith, then I saw this and it immediately replaced it. So sorry I didn't get to see it on the big screen.

Young Blood Priest

This movie has been slept on for so long. I’m glad you guys liked it.

Jesse Coombs

An underrated Val Kilmer movie is "Spartan". Written by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross). It's a sharp military/espionage thriller. Highly recommended.

schnoobs

I was beginning to worry that you guys wouldnt watch this since it was only in second place in the poll. im so happy right now

REDR58

The “Wonder Girl” inscription on the baseball bat that Michelle Monaghan was holding is a reference to the 1984 Robert Redford movie “The Natural” about a baseball player who names his favorite baseball bat “Wonderboy” (also referenced in The Simpsons episode “Homer at the Bat” where Homer carved the name “Wonderbat” on his baseball bat).

Patrick

I love how much they make fun of the whole "So, what do you do for a living?" question. People just wondering if they can use you or not. I always thought it was weird that "What do you do?" is usually the 2nd question so many people ask someone when trying to get to know them. I've always taken it as "Based on your answer to this question, I'm immediately going to judge your socio-economic background and potential power in this world, and will treat you accordingly."

REDR58

Anyone else notice that the song playing over the end titles “Broken” was written and performed by Robert Downey Jr.? And as far as Val Kilmer‘s character goes, there’s no way in the world this is the first movie to have a main character who is gay. Top of my head I can think of Tom Hanks who is the co-lead in “Philadelphia” (1993) who is gay (and you should totally watch that movie).I know there’s ones before that as well.

JBirdLowdown

So glad you guys did this! In my top 5 all time. (In fact I think Dead Poets is the only top 5 of mine you haven't done yet!) Downey had a terrific run post-recovery and pre-Iron Man (not that iron Man and beyond is not good) and I wish it was celebrated more than just in film circles. It'll never get chosen because view count would be low which is totally understandable, but "Wonder Boys" is a truly wonderful lost gem from this era. Its the kind of drama that doesnt get made anymore and I think you both would love. Seek it out privately if not for the channel at least.

G Lam

and The Birdcage, and Jeffrey (Starring Patrick Stewart by the way, he's great as a gay character). And arguably :Prescilla Queen of the Desert:, and :To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar"

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

The key phrase was “openly gay lead in an action movie”. There’s been gay characters in movies probably since the beginning. But starting with the Hays Code, homosexuality was banned from being depicted in American movies during its implementation, that would be from 1934-68. Then consider the typical “masculine” tropes expected in action movies, especially during the 70s-90s, it checks out that Val Kilmer’s character was probably the first openly gay lead in an action movie. Although if we’re all being honest, action movies were always pretty gay (I say this with my tongue firmly pressed to my cheek).

Love this movie. It’s very much a throwback to two classic Hollywood genres, the detective noir and the screwball comedy, which were often paired together. Colin Farrell actually made a similar movie called Seven Psychopaths which has Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell in it, highly recommended. Also, Inherent Vice, which is by the director of Boogie Nights and set at the start of the 70s. Just on the subject of drug addiction, a really helpful way to think about opioids is as painkillers. Most people don’t get addicted to opioids because they are not in pain; if you’ve ever had a serious injury or surgery you’ve probably taken opioids and not even thought about it afterwards. With that framing we can immediately understand how insane criminalising the use of these drugs is. People who had terrible childhoods (like RDJ), or trauma, or mental illness, or physical injury, seek out ways to avoid feeling pain. Addiction is the state of not having any other way to avoid the overwhelming pain you live with. Overcoming addiction is truly admirable for anyone but we also live in a society that treats addiction as a moral failing and puts addicts in prisons or in poverty, places where there pain is more likely to fester or be made worse. If we want people to stop being addicted to drugs we need to find ways to take their pain away. I really just wanted to say that movies that portray heroin addiction as the end of everything or as a life sentence are not being honest or realistic about it. A really good book on the history and science of drug addiction is Johann Hari’s Chasing the Scream. If a book is too much then google Rat Park.

Chinatown! Yes, and The Big Sleep (1946) and The Long Goodbye (1973) both based on Raymond Chandler novels. All the chapter headings in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are from Chandler books or stories.

megamoo chilli

You should watch Top Secret if you haven't already. Young Val Kilmer - singing, yes singing. Absurdist comedy.

Odd Thomas

Another great Val Kilmer movie is The Ghost and the Darkness with Michael Douglas and Kilmer hunting man-eating lions.

Hyperdryve

Going to keep suggesting Earth Girls Are Easy and The Imposters (1998) 😅

Chris Rankin

I love both these movies...but tombstone he's on another level. He disappears into Doc Holiday.

Jesse Ewiak

Nobody else mentioned it yet, so the story is, even though this film was a bit of a commercial failure, Favreau saw RDJ's performance in this, and it proved RDJ could do the funny, quippy thing.

Max Krause

Rewatching this tonight in memory of Val Kilmer. RIP :´(
