Ahaha. I can tell that you were kind of disappointed by it. So far I've only heard people saying it's subpar, so I've not yet bothered to see it myself. Honestly, I didn't even think we needed a sequel to Gladiator. Some films are fine as standalone and don't require sequels. Probably just another case of Hollywood trying to cash in on a popular name. I might see it once it's on Netflix or possibly Amazon just out of interest, but not holding my breath. Caracalla, from what I know, historically was a pretty horrible Roman emperor, usually deemed as one of the worst (after Caligula, Nero, and Commodus; the last one of which we've had in the first Gladiator).

I agree that a sequel was not necessary. However, it is not impossible to think of ways that the story presented in this sequel could have been more than it is. I was disappointed, only in that I expect more of Scott since he has so frequently delivered in the past. I don't think it was a cash grab per se, it's not as bad as like Jurassic Whatever: Dinosaurs Ahoy (which... dumb as it is I'll probably see anyway) but it was kind of... just a movie. Caracalla is definitely horrible in the movie, but in a way that is not all that interesting. The most dynamic character in the movie is Denzel Washington's Macrinus. It seems like there will actually be a Gladiator III. GladThreeAtor. GladIIIator. Who will gladiate next?! Bleh. I wish I'd have the chance to see War of the Rohirrim in the theater, but I won't.
