i agree that western music competitions just arent like this. I wish there were more shows like this though because its genuinely amazing to see what can be created when they are given the challenge

Right?! And, I'd have to admit that there are entire genres of popular music in the west in which it would be hard to have a music show on a grand scale like this. Because, to be honest, a fair amount of western music doesn't actually tell a story. It's one of the reasons I'm drawn to Kpop.

I felt exactly the same when I watched it the first time, and tbh I still feel like that every time I see it! The sheer audacity of how extensive the change between this and the original song is, the energy, then Hongjoong's incredible charisma, Jongho's vocals, San's, well, everything, Seoghwa's rap and styling, Yunho's, Wooyoung's and Yeosang's dance and swag - it's the best stage of Kingdom for me, no question. Also, the fact that it was so clear even if you, like me, knew nothing about their storyline or about the dystopian Halateez universe - the Orwellian / Equilibrium cues were so powerful. It's just on a completely new level of performance (also, I'm an absolute sucker for this sort of punk aesthetic).

Yesss this performance was epic and I truly enjoyed this even if IKON's own style is not at all to my tastes I really liked this cover. And the thought they put into this - well into all of their stages connecting them to their story - is kind of overwhelming. Because this is literally part of their storyline, them stealing the hourglass aka Cromer from an museum and the government forbidding arts because human emotions are seen as a threat. This is part of the origins of halateez - in the newspaper Wooyoung was holding up at the beginning of the performance it says "-the government defined the Black Pirates as a terrorist-", though I can only read that part of the frontline it says it all. And I like how the story of this performance is quite clear so that a person who isn't familiar with their storyline can get the main theme, really well done.

Thank you for the translation! It's so cool how much work they're putting into these performances and how much they are expanding their universe with the show.

Yesss, i've been looking forward to you seeing this performance!! I watched the show because i'm a Stay through and through (i'm only a casual fan of Ateez) but i'll be honest....Ateez are the performances that I STILL go back to rewatch over and over. Of course i'm super happy and proud of Skz for winning the show, but i think it's pretty clear that they had an upper hand when it came to fan voting. Ateez is a younger group from a smaller company so honestly if you took the fan voting out of the equation, i think they probably would have won. And even as a massive Stay, i would have thought it well deserved. I will admit though, my appreciation for Ateez's performances is a little extra because they happen to do concepts super up my alley. I'm a little bit of a sucker for anything ragtag/pirate/anti-hero. I know this performance was supposed to be Money Heist inspired, but i haven't seen that. So instead it gave me more DC Villain vibes like the Trickster or the Joker which i also really like.

K-pop Auntie

I've only seen one episode of Money Heist, and that was some time ago. What it reminded me of was V for Vendetta. An older movie now, but it has staying power. Highly recommended. It's based on a DC comic. Anti-heroes. I could see ATEEZ having won this if the fan voting weren't a part of it as well. Their performances are great with engaging concepts and spectacular choreo.

I absolutely love the fact that you read the subtitles and that you pause instead of talking over

Katja van den Berg

Yes, there are no shows like this in the western music world / tv world. I loved the 80s music videos and that's what I recognised when I started watching some kpop, but this type of show...the theatricality...the power...it's just unreal and I love it so much. I try to explain to people here, but kpop still has the stigma of being all about beauty and cuteness and they talk about girls in school skirts and boys in sailor outfits. I have a way to go with friends. ANyway, I agree with you about why kpop is so amazing. Loved Ateez' performance. They really drew me in. It's interesting though, that they ended up 1st with the expert votes, 3rd with the self-evaluation and youtube watches and 6th with the global votes. Big differences!! Oh and to support a previous comment: I too love that you read the subtitles out loud and pause. One of the reasons I started watching your reactions more.

I think it's a shame (to a certain degree) that kpop groups are referred to as boy groups and girl groups. I think my generation spoiled that. We had Insync and Backstreet Boys and all that, and sure those guys could sing, but they were honestly pretty average. So, boy groups were stereotyped as pretty faces with average talent and large marketing budgets who just produced the catchy/poppy songs they were told to produce and that weren't of the kind of quality to be fan favorites for years to come. And yeah, there were a ton of teenage girls with posters in their rooms obsessing over the guys looks in my days. I'm pretty sure that's why kpop is stereotyped as that sort of 'boy group' instead of getting the respect other musical artists get.
