I think Jinshi was all smily because he just loved seeing Maomao care so much about someone. She really doesn't tend to show affection much in that way. He laughed at Maomao saying she "wouldn't be able to sleep well" if she didn't do anything because it just sounds like a somewhat made up excuse for her to be able to avoid straight up saying that she cares a lot about Xiaolan's well-being lol. Jinshi realised she was being slightly insencere about her feelings, hence he laughed. Probably a reason his mood was lighter than one might think would be appropriate is likely that he himself has enough power to be able to make sure nothing seriously bad would happen to Xiaolan, so from his POV the situation wouldn't be as dire

IMO Jinshi was laughing because Mamao, in typical fashion, was being oblivious about her own motives for wanting to help Xiaolan. She was clearly helping because she cares about her friend, but she wasn't able to admit it to herself.

I couldn't tell if your reaction when Maomao said Luomen was her great uncle was unfamiliarity with the term or something else but in case you're unsure a "great uncle" is your grandparent's male sibling.

I was surprised by the great uncle thing. It was heavily implied if not outright stated that he is Lakan's uncle in season 1, but I didn't realize that Maomao was aware of their relation. What the reader and what the characters know are rarely the same, after all.

Off topic, but I hope you eventually check out the show Witch Watch which is airing it's first season right now. It's incredibly charming and funny and has a incredible cast. It' just *chefs kiss*. It is about 90% comedy with 5% romance and 5% plot though, haha. That said, it's really great, and I feel it makes the serious moments in the series all the better. I started binge reading it after seeing the first episode. This first season is gonna have 26 episodes and should cover half of what's considered "Part I". Hope you look into it at some point!
