3 Hours! You weren't kidding. This is actually my first time watching and coming from someone started with the Nolan stuff I really liked it a lot! Interested in checking out the sequels. I've heard some things about that Batman and Robin movie...

This was a bit before me hitting movie watching age, Batman Returns being my first batman movie, so going back to it was interesting. The Animated Series is still “my” Batman, but it helps seeing why Mark Hamill said the show runners just wanted him to be Nicholson Joker when he got the gig. You can see bits of Nicholson’s Joker in Hamill’s, particularly early on.

So excited you guys are doing this. For my Batman-loving-asses’ money, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is the best on screen portrayal. The vibes of it are VERY BTAS.

Sherman Harrison

Listening to you nerds talking about "reappraisal" of Batman is panacea for me!

Snek

Great episode of a great movie. Sort of related is that I remember getting a laughing bag from a trip to an amusement park as a kid and my sister possibly just throwing it out the car window on the way back because it was so annoying. Can’t guarantee that it would’ve been a licensed Batman thing, though it was definitely in the early 90s.

This was the first time I was really aware of the PG-13 rating because I was 11 1/2 when this came out and was thinking I was going to have to wait until my birthday the next year before I could see it. So I was in disbelief when my grandma took me and my sister (4 years younger) to see it and loved the hell out of it. And perhaps it was Hamill's Joker overshadowing it later, in my mind I had somehow only remembered Nicholson's Joker being a gangster with white face paint but rewatching was surprised by the psychotic joking he still had.

Oh and one more thing, I really like the touch that the 1989 Lego Batwing set includes a mini fig of the boombox thug along with rubber cowl Batman, and Mime Joker with killer feathered pen.

In the soundtrack section, some of the song samples don't fade out at the end, so it's a little hard to hear your discussions in a few places.

nextlander

Well that's weird. Sometimes when I move clips around the fades get messed up and I'm guessing that's what happened here. I just uploaded a fixed version. If you downloaded the old one to your podcast app you may have to delete and re-download.

I think I only saw this one once, but I LOVED returns as a kid. This one is prob a better "movie"

jroc

I would watch the end credits of our Batman VHS tape just for the song Scandalous which they never played on the radio.

Gyratyne

Thanks, Alex. By the way, I had good laugh at the Virtuosity callback.

Fun conversation! Am starting to think there may be a couple too many sound clips added in as it feels like to us that it starts to detract from the conversation/breaks up the flow. Minor quibble though. Thanks as always

The episodes are extra special when you’ve all got shared history with a film. Especially an iconic era flick like Batman. Really enjoyed this one.

I didn't see this in theaters (but I did with the sequels), but when I rewatched this movie years ago, it's definitely my favorite of the original Batman series and one of the best Batman movies period. Batman Returns strikes me as more of a Burton movie than a Batman movie, if that makes any sense. Quick notes: Corto Maltese has been used in multiple DC movies and series, including as the setting for The Suicide Squad. Nolan's Batmobile was the Tumbler, not the Rumbler.
