The Malazan series is my all-time favorite @Vinny! It's a long 10 books, with quite a few side-novels out there as well, but it's worth the effort. I'm in the middle of my third read-through right now and feel like it gets even better each time.

Hana and Kotaro are good, but they just start bugging their otters with toys. Loutre, that's where it's at. They have otter babies and watch them grow and play. They have a "Kindergarten" where they allow the public to come feed, pet, play with otters. If I ever get to Japan.
