My only familiarity with G.I. Joe was the G.I. Joe PSA parodies and somehow these guys yelling "yoo Joe" as a canon thing that really happens in the movie is just as unreal to me as the parody stuff e.g. "Mr. Body Massage Machine Go!" "Pork Chop Sandwiches".

The original plan for season 3 (before DIC took over) was for an offshoot of Cobra, called The Coil, to be the new enemy. It would have been led by Tomax and Xamot.

Another fantastic podcast. Always enjoyable. ^.^

The whole thing with not killing Duke has always seemed silly to me. As a lifelong GI Joe fan, Duke has always been a big nothingburger of a character. I never cared about him and neither did anybody I know. He's one dimensional and has no personality, which is nothing like Optimus Prime. You wanna kill off Shipwreck or Flint? I'm rioting in the street. But Duke? Nah. Cobra Commander's fate, which they left in the movie, is so much more sad and upsetting than Duke dying on screen to me.

As someone with no prior knowledge of G.I Joe this movie was quite incomprehensible. There are so many characters, many have one or two lines and disappears again. Also, as they mention in the podcast, the fact that most of the Joes are just dudes makes it really difficult to tell alot of them apart. Also, this movie really is all the evidence i need for why G.I. Joe wasn't that big in Denmark, it is so American.

I know it would be too much as a required supplemental viewing, but the documentary "Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films" is a fun documentary on the rise & fall of Cannon including the tumultuous 1987 of Master of the Universe and Superman 4 (and many many others). I watched it ages ago when it was on Netflix but it looks like there is a version of it uploaded to Youtube.

I met Larry Hamma at Joe Con a few years back. He told me a pretty fun story about meeting a guy in the Russian subway in the middle of the night to buy a black market cosmonaut suit to use as a model for some of his work. Also, the character tunnel rat is a Larry Hamma self insert. He is based on his time in Vietnam and the job that he did when he was in the military.

I unabashedly love this movie and Gi Joe, and even young me (after being traumatized by Optimus' death) couldn't believe they didn't actually kill Duke. I was also angry that this wasn't released in theaters at the time. You guys covered most of my thoughts about this movie, but watch recommendations: GI Joe: Resolute - in my opinio,n a very good mature animated movie that came out in 2009, I think? And then Gi Joe - Renegades. It only had one season, but I think it was a promising way to bring Gi Joe back and had subtle nods to things from the original cartoon, and had a kind of here's the Joe of the week episodes.
