To put it in perspective, I started reading/watching One Piece when I was about 26 and I'm Vinny's age. Best way to get into it is just read the manga. The art is great, the story and pacing is fantastic. The shows first 10 years are ok quality wise for a serialized show but the pacing is slow. 20% or more of every episode is theme songs and recap. The voice cast is impeccable though and it's a joy to see all your favorite parts play out. They are making movies to kind of up the quality and retell the main story in a more concise manner. The netflix show is good but not the way I'd want to get into the show, I haven't watched the 2nd season yet but will after EPWs recommendation.

As someone who started reading One Piece a couple years ago I will echo that Vinny should just read the manga. Especially for the first few hundred chapters, I was surprised at how quickly it moved, it’s a very fast read.
