Our esteem for Big Walk gets bigger this week, we run through a block of older roguelikes including Noita, Slay the Spire, Darkest Dungeon, and, uh, Quake, Sony still doesn't know when the PS6 is coming out, Warren Spector's august career is coming to a close, there are levels of sleepmaxxing we didn't even know about, the rules around Kiwi weed (Kiwiid?) are pretty strict, and more.

Your son in current day dev would likely slot into "Gameplay programmer". Designers do all the placing of gameplay in levels and tuning the numbers, making all the actual gameplay content (alongside an engineer if needed), but in terms of figuring out how it's implemented, it's gameplay programming. Tools programming now is way more in the line of "how can I export all these assets into the engine correctly" or "can I put this asset every 3 meters along a spline the artists have placed?" though these roles are WAY more variable in what they do depending on the studio.

I have to say a lot of the video game cookbooks are filled with gimmicks and kind of nonsense. A lot of the time they'll pad out a bunch of their pages with mediocre drink recipes and things that are basically just decorated cupcakes or cookies . Both of the D&D cookbooks however are filled with really, really fascinating recipes that do a really good job matching the theme and so far everything I've made out of either book has been really good. My big ham recipe is officially just the one out of the first D&D cookbook
