I always took vacation time when I had it, I'd usually split it up and take one week in the first half of the year and one week in the second half. Felt guilty at the time because I knew the amount of work everyone else would had to do with me gone, but I also realized that the other people I worked with felt the same way when they took their time off. We'd encourage each other to tak our allowed time off because the work was always going to be there. It was beyond valuable. We would always come back recharged and ready to work. Enjoy the time off guys.

Take vacation, fuck em.

Rob

Enjoy your time off whenever you want to take it. All of us will be here when you get back.

Just chiming in to say I'll unsubscribe if you folks don't take time off every quarter! ;) Everyone here wants you to be having fun and taking care of yourselves :)

In terms of vacation, I have 6 weeks of paid vacation here in Denmark, you can either use all 6 weeks in one go or spread them out over the year. I tend to have a 3 week summer vacation, and use the others for things like Christmas and so on.

Lack of encouragement to take time off and vacation and lack of building confidence with employees that they can take time off is a huge red flag that the company is a toxic employer. Leadership 1 on 1 conversations should always include the question “when do you get to take some time off?” And “oh awesome, and then anything exciting later on in the year?”. Everyone should take time off at least once a quarter, y’all more than deserve it. Thank you for all the incredible work so far, y’all spoil your audience with your greatness.

I generally take off a week for final fantasy 14 expansions , but it can working any favorite game that releases even if you just take off release day and treat yourself it really helps. Ps I also take off major patch days in ff14 but im a die hard fan its nice not to cram though

My company has a system where you can donate PTO, but it is highly restrictive. For example, I had a direct report who didn't have the PTO to go to a funeral. I tried to donate my PTO to them but HR rejected it because people dying is an expectation and not an unexpected occurrence.

+1 to Pandorum being an awesome movie. I appreciated the small resurgence Sunshine had recently, and if you anyone likes that movie you should definitely watch Pandorum. It's in top 10 Sci-Fi for me personally.

My vacation strategy is living in a country that has workers rights. My job must legally give me 5 weeks of paid vacation per year. I can even choose when I take them (within reason).

I have to say, re4 remake on pc on normal did not feel that hard. I’m not like a killer player, but using mouse and keyboard means easy aiming. I wonder if playing on a controller makes that game way harder.

As one of your many bosses, I give you permission to take time off. Even if your job is awesome, burnout is a thing. At least, I imagine that that's true. I've personally never had a job that I would deem "awesome." I make it a point to schedule one long weekend every month. It's not much; just a three or four day weekend every 3-4 weeks. My job sucks, but they are very generous with the annual leave that they give us. And the cap that we can have at a time is, like, 250 hours or something kind of insane.

I downloaded the Patreon app just so I could comment on this PTO thing. I thought I loved hearing you guys talk about video games, but this bonus convo hit so close to home. I love to travel, but share these anxieties. My employer is thankfully supportive, but like Alex said, I still need to unlearn feeling bad about it and get my ass to Japan. It's so real.

Definitely. I had a supervisor role, where I averaged 60+ hours a week. I bought concert tickets, and requested that door off 3 months in advance. It was denied. Thankfully, I found another job. So I called in, went to the concert, and brought in my two weeks notice the next day lol. Promised myself to avoid another employer like that.

Mike

Takes guts to do that but probably for the best. Staying in that type of toxic workplace is not worth it at all. The most important customer is the internal one forever and always in my book

Honestly, my boss has always said - "The work will be here when you get back." I've gotten into a mindset that I need to take care of myself and have a healthy work/life balance. I've also come to trust that if I'm not at my work, my team and leaders can handle things. When I go on vacation now - I delete my email from my phone and completely disconnect. I think for people who stream - There is a mentality sometimes that if you take off, you'll be forgotten, so they don't take off. All that to say! Nextlander crew - You guys do an amazing job and you should take off when you need to! :)
