Completely forgot The Conjuring 2 was based on the Enfield haunting. In retrospect both movies depict the ghost's origin and paranormal testing equipment similarly. Also, for anyone looking for something in the same ballpark as this movie: Lake Mungo is a ghost story mockumentary in the more traditional documentary format. So less charming (and less British) but still very unique in the found-footage and adjacent genres.

Think it's hard to talk about how authentic Ghost Watch felt at the time. I caught it about maybe 15 or 20 minutes in, so I never saw the opening credits. The fact that the presenters were all established faces on TV meant it felt like real. This was before anyone really saw any kind of found footage movies so there was nothing to compare it to, especially when you're 11 years old. Also, I've never heard anyone call any part of their house as the "glory hole" 😂

Ever since I was a young child I've had a morbid fascination of the Found Footage Horror Genre. Terrrorized by Fox specials like Alien Autopsy & Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (the former my Dad swore was real) and The Blair Witch Project - a movie so off putting to my friend's father that he tossed the VHS tape out of his house and refused to let it back inside lest it cursed his entire family. Ghostwatch would've undoubtedly traumatized me had I seen it live.

I watched this and still thought you were at first playing a clip of Goldblum talking, so a spot on reference from Brad

Not only did this show scare me to bits as a kid but in my head, until listening today I thought it was 100% live. I know you say on the pod but if you grew up in the uk in the 90s you defo will never ever forget Halloween 92

Just watched it on the Internet Archive and was so fascinated I purchased the blu-ray because I want to hear the audio commentary and documentary. As an American I can't imagine CNN trying to pull a stunt like this.

Is there away to listen to these podcasts in a podcast app?

So glad they covered Ghostwatch, it is somewhat infamous here in the UK. When it was first broadcasted the published info to the TV guides and continuity announcements prior to its airing both encouraged the "reality" of the program. "Inside number 9" (Another program Alex might be interested in) recently pulled off a similar stunt. The personalities chosen like Craig Charles were also realistic choices one would expect for a "live special" in this vein. The whole presentation is very similar to actual real live outside broadcasts that would occassionally air at the time. I think the slow start was also actually the key to the effect, not having anything ghostly for so long encourages the idea of a real live shoot finding nothing. No entertainment program would do so little for so long...or would it? Also have to absolutely agree with alex, that shot with the window is when the creepy really arrives!
