Chapter 304
Sophia and Maya went to the domain to start working on the desert biome, which the cat-girl was very excited about. While doing so, Maya used a decent amount of her new authority for the first time after the boost and was surprised by just how much stronger she had gotten. Controlling it was a bit of an issue, though, so she decided to start training on how to use her magic while creating the oasis part of her desert.
“Wow, that was fast! Having that much power definitely has its perks after all!” The couple was still working on the oasis when Maya eventually stopped creating water and looked at the massive lake in front of them with a satisfied expression. “That wasn’t even half an hour!”
"A lot of magic is a lot of fun~.” Sophia gave her a thumbs-up. “I hope you’re starting to understand why I’m the way I am.”
“Oh, don't worry, I figured out why you’re the way you are a long time ago.” She smirked at the tiger.
“…” The blonde stared at her for a moment. “You’re not talking about my magic here, do you?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about~.” Her expression only got even more playful.
“Grr!” Sophia responded with a short growl. “You have to admit that having so much authority is amazing, is it not?!”
“As I said, it definitely has its perks.” The cat-girl nodded.
“Just say it’s cool already!” The tiger was losing her patience.
“It’s very cool.”
“Thank you very much!” Sophia smiled at her. “Ari also said that she's going to let loose more once we're on the demon continent, and there's no way you're letting her go ahead of you, right? Lots of magic usage is very important for that~.”
“The demons won’t survive us, will they?"
“A little common sense destruction never hurt anyone.”
“…” Maya stared at her for a little while. “I’ll ignore a lot of people, maybe even myself included, but Menzor, at the very least, would jump you for saying this.”
“Hehe.” She reacted with a hearty chuckle.
“Yep, definitely jumping you.”
“So, are you happy with the lagoon lake, or should we adjust it some more?" Sophia simply went ahead and changed the topic.
“The shape looks good, but I can still see the white of your domain, so some sort of different underground would be nice.”
“Good point.” The tiger agreed with her. “I think we should be able to take care of that once we start creating more sand.”
“Ohh, that’s true!” Maya nodded a few times. “By the way, I have a question!”
“You want to know how we make more sand?”
“You know me so well~.” She smirked at the blonde again.
“Yep, that’s what it is.” Sophia lightly rolled her eyes. “That is a good question, though. I’m not exactly quite sure yet. With the other biomes, it was rather easy because we could feed raw magic to plants, and the soil and stuff came free on top because magic provided it. Sure, we have some cacti and palm trees, but we want to use them sparingly because otherwise it wouldn't really be a desert, right?"
“I want a lot of them around the oasis, but it should become a lot less the further out we go.” Maya agreed with her. “Really far away, it should only be sand, too.”
“Mhm, the area around the oasis will be easy then. Further away, not so much.” Sophia looked around while tilting her head. “I wonder… if we can create water out of thin air, what stops us from doing the same with sand? After all, there’s just no way magic can simply make water from the humidity in the air around us. I’m no expert, far from it, but there’s not that much water in the air around us!” She looked at Maya’s lake at the end.
“What are you talking about?” The cat-girl looked confused.
“Don't worry, I’m just thinking out loud.”
“You thinking out loud is in the top five of my worries!” It didn’t calm down Maya. “It means you’re up to something.”
“I’m always up to something!”
“That’s also part of my top five worries~.”
“Well, I guess you don’t want more sand, huh?” The tiger rolled her eyes again.
“That’s also worrisome!”
“You worry too much~.” Sophia’s expression turned cheeky.
“Fair enough.” She had to give the point to her. “So, how do you plan on giving us more sand?”
“How about pumping a lot of raw magic into the sand and see what happens?” Sophia shrugged while looking around.
“Seems foolproof.” The cat-girl rolled her eyes. “It sounds like you’re trying to create a gritty explosion if you ask me. The sand will just get everywhere.”
“Well, it is sand.” She let out a chuckle. “It always gets everywhere.”
“Not wrong.”
“Anyway, let’s give it a try!” Sophia lightly clapped her hands before concentrating on the white sand a little further away from them. A moment later, a small whirlwind appeared and began picking up sand while growing massive at a rapid pace. Before long, it turned into a proper sandstorm. “Now release some of your magic into it.”
“Like when we grow a biome?”
“Pretty much!” She nodded before focusing on the sandstorm again and watching how the purple magic particles slowly left Maya’s body and incorporated themselves. Things soon turned rather violent as all the extra magic only increased the intensity of the storm.
“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Maya looked at the spectacle with a complicated expression as she scratched her cheek.
“That would be a first, wouldn’t it?” The tiger smiled at her. “When do I ever know what I’m doing?”
“…” She paused for a second. “Y-You do have your moments every now and then.”
“Well, today’s not one of them~.” Sophia sounded strangely proud as she gave her a thumbs-up. “We’re deep in the realm of mess around and find out.”
“Not your specialty!” The cat-girl didn’t like the sound of that.
“On top of it being my specialty, it’s also my favorite.” She winked at her with her smuggest expression yet. “Do you mind if I add some of my magic? Things became a little more energetic, but it doesn’t feel quite enough yet.”
“I definitely wouldn’t mind if we create the desert together. In fact, I’d like that.” Maya nodded a few times. “However, I have the feeling that I’ll be eating sand in a few minutes once your experiment explodes all over my face.”
“Was that type of wording really necessary?” The blonde raised an eyebrow.
“Yes.”
“Not surprised about that one, actually.” She shrugged again. “Okay, let’s spice it up just a little bit~.” Saying so, the tiger concentrated for a moment, and a lot more magic particles flew into the sandstorm as she released around 15% of her authority. From her point of view, she soon stopped seeing the sand at all because the particles completely blocked out her view.
“Uhh…” As the cat-girl was unable to see raw magic, the sight in front of her was completely different. The storm had turned incredibly violent, and she could make out how some of the sand literally twitched around in the air as if being tugged at with some sort of invisible force. Her bad feeling grew more pronounced with each passing moment as the storm kept intensifying and emitting some concerning sounds, and she eventually couldn't make out the massive lake in front of them as the sandstorm had completely swallowed the couple.
“Let’s go!” Sophia energetically clapped her hands once, and things dramatically changed once again. The entirety of the storm completely froze in place for a moment, and everything in the vicinity turned completely silent. Not even a second later, the sound of a massive explosion echoed through the area while the sand and magic particles got instantly scattered away from the couple in a wide, dome-like shape. “See, I didn't even give you a facial~.” She let out a small chuckle as she smiled at Maya once things started calming down.
“…” The cat-girl looked disappointed for a second, but taking in their surroundings stopped her from making a comment on it. The sandstorm was gone, but the surroundings had changed considerably. Everything was covered in sand as far as their eyes could see. Even the lakebed no longer had the default white of Sophia's domain.
“Oho, that worked even better than expected!” The tiger looked quite impressed with herself. The two had created a whole desert out of nowhere. There weren’t any massive dunes just yet, and no plants either, but the oasis lake looked quite nice already. There was an interesting pattern in the sand, as well. Probably formed by the explosion, there were many wave-like ripples all around them, formed into circles, with the couple at the epicenter with more distance between each ripple the further away they were. “Mostly because I didn’t expect it to work at all.
“This is insane!” Once she fully understood it and her sand-cat genes were activated, Maya got even more excited as she looked around. "It's an amazing start, and I can't wait to start shaping it even more! We need lots of massive dunes! How far does the sand go?”
“I love it when you’re this excited~.” Sophia smiled at her for a moment before looking around. “I’m actually not sure. It's just sand, devoid of life or traces of magic. Everything got converted, it seems like. Judging by how much magic I used and can’t see the end of the sand even when straining my eyes, I’d say that we’d need a couple of days of walking to reach the end.”
“Amazing!” Maya’s eyes were sparkling.
Afterward, the two looked around a little more to check just how well the magic worked while also checking the lake to make sure nothing had changed in a way Maya didn't like.
