Warning: this video is a bit of a downer. Turns out I played lots of games in April that I didn't really connect with. So prepare for salt and tune in!

I was prepared for salt and got mild disappointment and reasonable reactions. Where's the histrionics and hyperbole? (More seriously, this was bound to happen with the 'everything I played, good or bad' format of the Playlist. You can't expect to play a game worth recommending every month.)

Thank you for confirming my view of Days Gone, as it seemed a bit disappointing from all the gameplays I've seen. Far from proper Sony exclusive material one needs to play on day one. This one, maybe day budget-price if ever. Also, Block Boy (haven't played the previous iterations) seemed a bit simplistic when I was checking it in Nintendo Store and having some more titles to finish (including BABA), I think I'll pass.

Have you checked out Outward? I'd describe it as an "adventurer simulator", it's a hands off open world action adventure with a focus on exploration and some survival elements and a dark souls inspired battle system. The feeling when playing it reminds me of Breath of the Wild, although it doesn't have the same polish (would be a bit much to expect that from a 10 person team). It's a good example for creating a new experience through omission (e.g. the map is quite sparse, and your position isn't marked on the map, you have to use it with landmarks and your compass to figure out where you are, like Firewatch, but in a mach larger world) and combining elements from different genres. It also has a unique death system, or rather defeat system, and a lot of emphasis on backpack management. The different backpacks have different values (e.g. where is the lantern mounted, how does it influence dodge rolls, or ofc how much can it fit) so you have to find the one that fits your playstyle best. You can also quickly drop your backpack with a button press to be more mobile, but then you lose access to all the items in it (like heal potions) since you can only carry little directly on you.

If you're looking for a game you might feel a bit more positive about, check out Supraland, which came out in April as well. 3D Metroidvania puzzle action explore-a-thon that I could barely put down until I beat it 100% (in about 23 hours of gameplay).

Your take on Days Gone matches most of the reviews I've seen. It checks all the boxes for being a video game and doing video game things, but nothing really new or even exciting about it. Bummer. Cool to see what inkle is up to these days, I've been replaying their Sorcery! games and really enjoying them. Might have to give that one a shot.

It's a shame you didn't really enjoy the new stuff you checked out this month. Well, there's always next month right? You mentioned you're still playing Baba Is You with your fiancee. Personally, I love to see the personalities I respect talk about the things they're enjoying, so it would have been cool to see you say a bit more about Baba Is You (or anything else you're still playing). So even if you've covered it before, if you were to spend a minute or two gushing about the stuff that still makes you smile, it'd make me smile a bit too by proxy. Something to consider in the future! (I picked up Baba Is You on your recommendation from last month and I've had a blast puzzling it out with my special someone)

Love these playlists. Your thoughts on Days Gone were mostly how I felt about Horizon Zero Dawn. It was just this big mix of open worldy stuff that touched on Assassin's Creed, Batman Arkham, Uncharted, Skyrim... certainly an impressive mix but eeeh it couldn't hold my interest for much more than halfway through.
