Hello! Instead of your usual playlist video, this month I wanted to revisit a game I talked about in a previous episode.

In June, I lamented the fact that I couldn't get into Outer Wilds - despite it sounding like the exact sort of game I love to play. For July, I gave the game another go, finished it, and enjoyed it a lot more.

In this video I want to talk about the game, talk about what went wrong the first time, and share some criticisms.

The game at the very end, if you were wondering, is Eagle Island. I'll talk about that in August!

Glad to hear you were able to get into Outer Wilds eventually! It's one of my favorite games in a long time, though I can definitely see where each of your criticisms are coming from. The thing that really helped me keep track of all the information that was thrown at me was that I played it together with my partner. With them backseat copiloting and reading all the same information, we were better at remembering things, staying on track, and catching connections that I would have missed on my own. Really recommend this as a way to play the game for anyone who hasn't started it yet!

Glad it clicked with you eventually! It's absolutely my favorite game of the year so far, and I was sad to see you didn't like it at first. I agree with some of your criticisms though, except for the "central mystery" part. Trying to figure out what the central mystery actually was (and wasn't) was what made the game's ultimate message resonate with me.

I agree these games really come alive with a pen and paper nearby. I recommend noting down the character's names and what you learn about them as well - although this doesn't play into the puzzles, it really helps flesh out some of the more interesting characters in the game and help you understand their motivations.

I totally get that the fear of death inhibiting exploration thing you were talking about , especially with Subnautica which I feel is very similar to Outer Wilds. The leviathans that could kill you pretty quickly really made exploration a white-knuckle affair. I had to get over this fear of the deep to make progress. However, I feel that the save system (and lack of auto-save) in Subnautica helped me overcome this fear by save-scumming back to a safe part. This really isn't possible in Outer Wilds, but then again I have yet to encounter leviathans. Anyway, it is interesting to play this right after beating Subnautica.
