Hey! I'm trying something a little different for this month's bonus video.

I've been enjoying the videos of Tim Cain, where he tells stories about his career in the games industry.

So I thought I'd try something similar for GMTK - to-camera vlogs, chatting about my experiences with YouTube, games journalism, GMTK, design consulting, travelling the world, and so on.

I also want to use this to help me practice an important skill: talking (off the cuff) to camera. My Developing stuff is heavily scripted and rehearsed, but I'd love to be able to just talk about a subject off the top of my head. So fingers crossed this helps with that, too.

Hope you dig it. Please leave any requests for topics in the comments.

Thanks for your patience while I figure out these bonus videos. I don't want to just create any-old junk simply to tick a box on the Patreon rewards. I want to do something that is fun, interesting, and worthwhile.

Your support is, as always, massively appreciated

Let's Talk About... The YouTube Algorithm

Hi Mark, always look forward to your bonus videos! You're a good off-the-cuff speaker, as structured and clear as your openly published material, however you're noticeably less succinct. 25 minutes was too long for me on this topic and felt like it could have been cut down significantly. I'd ask what's more important to you in these videos? If it's practicing off the cuff presenting, maybe edit out tangents and off-shoots. If you're looking to minimise the editing effort, I think you need notes to keep you focussed on a few key points. Overall I found it interesting still, the algorithm has always been a mystery to me.

Really enjoyed this. I honestly didn't notice the audio/visual downgrade. I think the context of just a freeflowing monologue to camera sets different expectations so that's not a problem. My channel is mostly art tutorials, so when I put out slightly different flavors they do not do well, but since it's a side gig for me I'm ok with that. I hadn't thought of the ever-widening demographic tests the algo does, but thinking of it this way helps to make sense of some stuff.

I enjoyed that! Having done a bunch of driving traffic to sites with SEO, lots is familiar. Completely identify with the algorithm feeling like a deity! I didn't know how the audience expansion when testing a video worked, makes complete sense.

I have a slim hope that Nebula can fix this sort of problem.

Mark, I wouldn't mind hearing ya geek out and tell us a little about media you engage with, such as games, film, streaming, or even music (if you enjoy those things).

An interesting quirk I learned about the algorithm when I started my still small channel is the recommendation of other small channels. I used to only get recommended the bigger channels with lots of views, but now I may see a video on my home page with less than 100 views. And honestly, I found some of my favourite hidden gems this way and I wish YouTube would give these smaller channels more of a chance.

Thanks for sharing. These kind of chats might make a good podcast: I actually turned this into an MP3 for myself to listen to in my own player. Anyway, if you make more of these consider using Patreon's Podcast feature to share audio in addition/instead of videos.

i appreciate the off-the-cuff nature of this video. a stream of consciousness can be less succint and harder to follow than a scripted video, like some commenters here have said. but i think what it also reveals is more about how you feel about the subject, which ends up revealing more about the subject itself. thanks for the vid!
