Hatamoto is not his name. It's his rank. It means "Bannerman", "Standard Bearer", "Personal Champion", "War Leader". Every Lord has their favored vassals whose loyalty is unquestioned and who basically make up his court and his captains on the battlefield. They are the Hatamoto, privileged to carry the long katana in the presence of their Lord, because it is assumed they would only ever draw it in his service and defense. And he trusts them implicitly. Each Lord has their own hatamoto. The hatamoto are the back row of chess pieces under the manipulation of their Lord. Everyone else in the world is just a pawn. But these... each has their strengths and weaknesses, and rules of successful engagement. The real battle is waged between the bannermen of each Lord, and the regiments of pawns they control. Yay Feudalism.
