Loving the reactions guys, but please rethink your Xander thoughts here. It's not up to him to 'let her' do anything. He thinks he knows best and should make decisions for her (and for Willow!) and it's deeply arrogant and misogynistic of him.

Buffy didn't burn down the gym in the movie, but in the script for the movie. There was a lot of studio interference with the movie that forced it to lean much more into the camp/comedy side of things. The series follows the intended canon of the movie, and not the actual movie events. The movie is worth a watch as a curiosity piece, but the show is the intended story and lore.

Nah, Xander never gets passed on this for me. You guys are entitled to your reactions but Buffy was emotionally destroyed killing Angel and Xander never answers for it. He should at the very least told her. Hell, if Buffy told Angel that he was about to get his soul back, he would have ditched Acathala and headed straight for Willow, giving Willow time to complete the spell before Acathala was awakened. Xander finallly got his chance at payback because Angel got there first.

He didn't want to have her have any doubts while fighting Angel to the death. Of course he's jealous of Angel, but in this sense I think him keeping her head clear here is the best for her. IMO... Doesn't mean it's the right decision, but I think for her safety it's the right call.

Easy to make it a jealous/misogynist thing, because of his hate for Angel, but IMO he's protecting his friend. Her being told to keep the fight going as long as possible, is much more dangerous than letting her think she has to kill Angel to save the world. She letting him stay alive, when she could kill him could end up being how he kills her. He can have thoughts/feelings of possibly not caring Angel gets killed by not telling her, but he can also be thinking of his friends safety at the same time.

Buffy was solidly safe on the WB by the middle of this season. It was the highest or second highest rated show on the network by this point. Dawson's Creek became the top rated show ever for WB around season 3 of Buffy.

Yeah, this is one of the highly debated Xander decisions that I actually kindof agree with. If only because the show itself told us, in part 1, that she was holding back with Angel while waiting for Willow to do the spell. It was very explicit. It's hard to separate Xander's intentions vs how good a decision it was, though, so I understand the other POV too. At the end of the day, though, I think Buffy not knowing helped her in the fight.

One moment that a lot of reactors miss is the way they linked Darla telling Angel to "close your eyes" before she turns him and Buffy telling Angel to "close your eyes" before she stabs him. I really liked that tie-in.
