There's no way he's already created Tyler Durden at the start, and it's entirely possible Tyler might be based on a real person (within the universe of the movie) - maybe that meeting with his single-serving friend on the plane really happened. But certainly by the time they meet at the bar, he's created him. Some nice gaslighting going on there early on :) The thing I really like about this movie is it's the exact inverse of what David Fincher thinks it is supposed to be - it's absolutely ram-packed full of truisms and he thinks it's a criticism, and it just isn't. This is why we don't let directors edit movies, because they mess them up with their ideas of what a movie is supposed to be :)
