On nuclear weapons and radiation, how much radiation there is after depends on if ground burst or air burst, hence why Hiroshima and Nagasaki were basically immediately inhabitable after WW2 and are now fairly large cities - they were both air busrt. On the plot, it'll make sense by the time you get to the end - and on the end now is probably a good time to point out that a) it's really a movie, there's 8 episodes left and the movie (which lines up nicely), and b) the extended version is the standard version, something to watch out for when you get there :)

Episodes 12 (53min) and 18 (63min) have extended versions as well. Plus there are The Face of the Enemy webisodes between episodes 11 and 12.
