My personal head cannon about vampires goes like this. A vampire is a dead body inhabited by a demon. Being dead all biological functions have stopped. Since a demon is in the body demonic energy now powers and mimics all normal bodily functions. So there is circulation without a heartbeat that distributes the demonic energy through the body. This allows for erections, smoking without the need for oxygen, compressing the neck to interfere with energy flow to the brain so the vampire can pass out. Basically anything a living body can do or experience a vampire can through demonic energy.
