NGL I haven't seen or spoken to my neighbours in months - I've been so busy and because it's winter I've not been working in the garden or whatever so I refuse to judge anybody on that :p The one guy, you're definitely not supposed to like him, and I personally don't think the character works (he's a decent enough actor btw, I've seen him in other things and he's been solid) - I just don't think he's well thought out. I've seen the show a bunch of times and it's never computed for me before but you're definitely right there's something subtly different about this episode. I think it's probably because they're starting to figure out the characters and how they want them, and I think you're seeing that starting to come through in the writing - obviously there's a big character moments for Peter, Walter AND Broyles in this one. When Fox commissioned the show they infamously wanted a replacement for X-Files and the first season is mostly 'freak of the week' like X-Files was, though there is definitely an overarching story that the show hasn't even really hinted at yet that when it kicks off (and it is running by the second season on that) it *really* kicks off into why so many people love this show - when that happens the freak of the week aspect [mostly] falls away and the show gets very busy and a little bit crazy. Besides that the first season is really heavy character development that pays off down the line.
