The actor who plays Tom Zarek is Richard Hatch, the original actor who portrayed Captain Apollo during the original series in the 1970s. Hatch graciously accepted a return to the series in a new role, one of the only actors to appear in both series. (One of the few original series actors surviving, too.)

Yeah Joe, get yer crazy famous peeps straight yo. XD

When the show was still only in pre-production (or earlier? IDK the timeline), Hatch was 'leading the charge' AGAINST the making of this show. He felt strongly that any BSG remake should continue the original story rather than be a reboot. I think it was a script or two he got to read that changed his mind, and made him more amenable to appearing as a new and intriguing recurring character. He did a 180 and fully supported Ron's and Dave's new show.

Yeah, the miniseries is credited with changing many people's opinions on the show. And it's why they did the pilot as a miniseries, not a pilot. Before the miniseries, it was only Eick & Moore's standing creds in Hollywood that greenlit production. After the miniseries, fan attitudes swung heavily in favor and they gave the greenlight for the series as a whole. BSG hit in 2004, just 3 years after 9/11. It was the first Sci Fi show to embrace concepts like terrorism vs. freedom fighters, tactics of modern resistance, and just like this episode, themes of government, freedom, and the tradeoffs of liberties for security and whether they were worth it or just created more issues down the line. Sudden nuke attacks on "Caprica City" had obvious parallels to the attacks on NYC and DC and was understood clearly as the subtext by everyone at that time. I know they're remaking the reboot now, and I will give it a try but don't expect much from it.

I'm sure that those of us that were there will try to point out the things that really made an impact on us. One of the little things from the mini series was the wall of photos of the dead with a few items left as a memorial left in the hallway. This is very much a reminder of how New York City streets looked after 9/11. Every time they visit this hall of this show it takes me back. Adam. you spoke of government themes in the 2004 show. You know, I'm just not sure that in my current mindset, I'm up to a 2024 reboot. There are some particular things in the news right now that I don't feel like seeing twisted in sci fi and then having to look at them from another angle right now, thankyou very much!

Sorry to take so long! I fell asleep during my first watch (not your fault) because of some strong medication after a dental procedure. Anyway... So, you already go the news about Tom Zarek. Pretty cool, huh? The original Starbuck, not so much. But you can't have everything, right? I'm still fighting with the sound. Is there a way that you can mute the sound other than you guys on Patreon after abut 10 seconds? Pretty please! For the sound other than us, I can attempt. Episodes up until 5 have this sound gate setup. I definitely plan on lowering it for the next sessions so occasionally audio comes through but not this much. I copied a few other bigger channels that use this style of the audio, I'll gladly remove most of it but I know occasionally fans use the audio coming through to ensure sync too.

Thanks for the consideration! I appreciate that! All the channels I'm on don't do it that way, but I don't know if they are 'big' or not. I may just be subscribed to a bunch of small timers! Lol! If that's the way most of your viewers want it, I'll just work harder to sync it up. I've always just found that it really doesn't need to be perfect as long as the sound is off and for me, it just makes things so much easier. The timer makes things close enough.

Got it! I followed a few of the 500k plus yt patreons just to see what they do. A lot do either sound or blurred video not both. I am absolutely removing most of the audio when possible, but leaving some for syncing isn't bad.
