Happy birthday for tomorrow, Mandy! 🥳🎉🎂 I hope you have a fantastic day. I assume you'll be celebrating on Sunday, or did you already have a double celebration last Sunday? Whatever you do, I hope your peeps spoil you! I'm also assuming there won't be a video tomorrow, so I'm saying it now. All the best Squeaks. 🤗🤗 https://www.instagram.com/p/C_iT32fvv3k/

Muggins

Thank you, Mandy. 🤗

steven

"Skewered his cat flap"🤣 Also, it wasn't wasabi, it was one mushy pea! Fantastic reaction, Mandy. Thank you. 🤗🤗 "BOOM MIC"...

Sixpence and tuppence (two pence)

Spacedone

Before 1971 the UK had a different currency system originally based on the old Roman currency system. It was called pounds, shillings and pence and unlike modern currency it wasn't based on decimals. They kept the names of certain currencies but the values were different. Because it was very easy to divide the old currency by different fractions, a lot of lesser coins were available. 'Tuppence' meant 2 pence (pennies), 'Haypnee' referred to a halfpenny, Sixpence was 6 pennies etc. £1 was worth 240 pennies so when Edmund came back from prostituting Baldrick at the docks with sixpence it meant Edmund was only 239994 pennies short of his £1000 target...

Blackadder is hyphenated at the beginning because when there's not enough space for a word (as it would go over the edge of the page if you kept going), in some forms of English the convention is you just put as much of the word as you can fit, then a hyphen, then finish the word on the next line. It's still "Blackadder" though, all one word. I think the hyphen being squiggly there is just a stylistic choice.

Gary T

Just because you asked 😃 Pre 1971… “Sixp’nce” pronounced without the ‘e’ but spelled with an ‘e’ is basically a coin valued at 6p or 6 pence. Tuppence was the name of a 2p coin. “Haypenny” is another word for a half penny coin. “Farthing” (with the ‘h’ definitely pronounced) was 1/4 of a penny. Money, pre 1971 was divided into Pounds, Shillings and Pence. Penny or Pence, when written, used to be abbreviated as ‘d’ not ‘p’, for some reason. There were 240d in £1 (sometimes £1 was written as 1l (lower case L) A shilling was 12d, and sometimes written as “s” “/“ or “/-“ if there were no pence value after that, and there were 20/- (shillings) in a pound. So the currency was written as LSD, which is what the person, that came up with it, must have been on. I hope that clarifies everything 🫤 People, apparently, complained when the UK switched to a decimal system (£1 = 100p), saying it was far too complicated. 🙂 History lesson over… you did ask 🤗

Josh

https://youtu.be/AEFWt8fjwFE?si=kpOfJkHrQfcjpFq2 Is this what you meant? Baldrick doesn't have problems with doors. The Bishop is throwing him through them 🤣 what was wrong with the green ring? Wells is the smallest city in the UK and was used for locations in filming hot fuzz A great reaction as always. Thank you Mandy 😊 Do you understand the explanation of the old currency? I certainly don't 🤣🤣 it was changed long before I was born.

BobSandwiches

Others have explained the Pounds/shilling/pence malarkey, so I figured I would add to the historical shenanigans... As I understand it, the "L/s/d" (Pound/shilling/pence) comes from the Roman "Librae/solidus/denarii" system, where 12 denarii = 1 solidus and 20 solidus = 1 librae (the same as with £/s/d) . It did not arise directly from Roman Britain however - it was imported much later from continental Europe. The first pennies were made from silver (there's inflation for you!) and 240 of them (allegedly) weighed a pound, hence why 1 UK pound (£) is named the same as a pound in weight. If you were paying for things in silver (as one often did back then) the coins would be weighed rather than taking the value of each one for granted. The Pound Sterling sign '£' is just a fancy capital 'L' for "Librae" ("librae" was Roman for a pound in weight). Not funny, and not particularly clever or interesting, but sufficiently obscure and dry to keep the average nerd awake for an extra 3 minutes... 😸

matthew lockyer

Adding to Spacedone's excellent explanation...2 farthings = 1 halfpenny 2 halfpence = 1 penny (1d) 3 pence = 1 thruppence (3d) 6 pence = 1 sixpence (a 'tanner') (6d) 12 pence = 1 shilling (a bob) (1s) 2 shillings = 1 florin ( a 'two bob bit') (2s) 2 shillings and 6 pence = 1 half crown (2s 6d) 5 shillings = 1 Crown (5s) 1 pound = 20 shillings. So 1 shilling = 5 pence in modern money) A £1 coin was called a Sovereign and was made of gold 1 guinea = £1-1s-0d ( £1/1/- ) = one pound and one shilling = 21 shillings or 21/- (which is £1.05 in todays money) The 'd' = penny (for 'denarius', a Roman silver coin) So if someone said to you thirteen and sixpence ha'penny it meant £0/13s/6 1/2d To people who were used to it it was second nature but obviously tourists to the UK and its commonwealth would have found it baffling and could eaasily be scammed.

Stuart

Some people complained about decimalisation, but my parents and many other people of that age say the old system was ridiculous.

Danny

The Black Adder was the original series name. It was the nickname the character named himself. His last name is Blackadder. I think it is just hyphenated for aesthetics. He is LORD Blackadder, so makes money from any tenants of land he owns

Remi

I'm pretty sure Brian was pissing in the plant pot🤣 nit just standing there, I was expecting you to either reference Mr krabs or something from friends 🤣 not a disgusting show like family guy

Danny

2 farthings = 1 halfpenny 2 halfpence = 1 penny 3 pence = 1 thruppence 6 pence = 1 sixpence (a 'tanner') 12 pence = 1 shilling (a bob) 2 shillings = 1 florin ( a 'two bob bit') 2 shillings and 6 pence = 1 half crown 5 shillings = 1 Crown

Wagoo

Loving these, Lady Blueadder! ;) It's funny when the mic pops into frame.. but you need to remember the framing on a CRT television would have not included quite the full picture we see today :)

Remi

Btw not all gold is gold, you can make purple and blue gold which looks fucking beautiful

Danny

Hey! My uncle used to be in Fivepenny Piece

Remi

Yeah but it's not as cool it's just the rich man's silver

Danny

Yeah, theyve had a bunch of members over the years. He was in the group in the mid to late 90s for about 4 or 5 years. https://i.ibb.co/CvxCWvQ/Fivepenny-Piece90s.jpg top left. He was one of the main singers. He still sings now but on cruise ships

Danny

And "Fool's gold" which is pyrite

Danny

Lol yeah. With him being in the band, it learned me of a bunch of songs I'd have never knew otherwise that they covered. Stuff like Down by the Riverside, Pick a Ball of Cotton, Ferry Cross the Mersey, Puff the Magic Dragon etc etc

Muggins

I wonder how much £1,000 of ye olde monies is worth in today's money - that's surely one ma-hoosive debt, even for somebody living as lavish as Edmund! 🤔 "Money or revenge", or AKA the adult version of Trick or Treat.

Muggins

And the gold bracelet I once owned which turned green when it got wet. 🙃

Jason Webb

Fun fact: The actor playing the Bishop of Bath & Wells (Ronald Lacey) also played the black-coated Nazi in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Stevus

Hi Miss Mandy 👋, a hearty happy birthday for your birthday and I hope you don't have to do ALL the organizing and preparation and also that everyone plays lots of fun games with you. It is your birthday after all. 🎉 🎂🍾

Remi

Ah yes Chinese gold my favourite

Julian

Geez I hope Mandy has her notebook ready when she reads this thread. I’d never looked it up before, but in the tv show Plebs, whenever money enters the conversation they say ‘denarii’. I didn’t know what it was. Btw Mandy, please put Plebs on your list of shows to react to. I think you’ll like it. Imagine a cross between the Inbetweeners and Peep Show, but set in Ancient Rome.

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

As it's now 7 minutes into the 6th (UK time) let me be the first to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIRY!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎂😘 [tu-punce] -> two pence [Six-punce] -> six pense I'm not old enough to know the rest. 🙃 "Privy" -> Private/acy -> a toilet essentially. Looking back now, I wonder how much better it would have been if they cast Mandy as the Queen. 😁 I'd have thought with her theatre work she'd be a great actress by now. You been on the Caffeine again? You're absolutely loopy this week hahahah.

BobSandwiches

"Geez I hope Mandy has her notebook ready when she reads this thread." I know, and gawd knows what she will make of it all, but as everyone else was riffing on the same theme, I thought to myself: "In for a denarii, in for a librae"... And good point about Plebs - it's a bit old, but is suitably silly!

2026-09-23 20:00 It amazes me that the boom mic was fractionally on-screen for less than a second and you spotted it, but it took 13m25s for you to spot Steve Merchant was holding your pink pencil on XFM S1E14. Hahaha!! :) I'm going through the XFM's again, can you tell ? :) I'll say it tomorrow as well but I'll say it now too as it's gone midnight here... Happy Birthday Mandy! Have the best one ever! x Great Blackadder reaction. Queenie on form on this one. The mind of a child but an over-riding power over everyone. That is unpredictable and scary. In Japan they had emperors who were I think around 9 years old back in the olden times (or 'years ago' as Karl would say). And as you said on the last episode, that dress is detailed! Imagine squeezing into that thing for hours on end. I asked ChatGPT about Blackadder's role in Series 2.... "In Series 2 of Blackadder, the character Edmund Blackadder is portrayed as a member of the lower English nobility, serving as the Lord of the Court of Queen Elizabeth I. His official role is somewhat ambiguous, but he is often seen as a courtier trying to maintain favour with the Queen while scheming for personal advancement. Blackadder's relationship with Queen Elizabeth I, or "Queenie" as she is often called in the series, is a complex one. The Queen, played by Miranda Richardson, is childish, capricious, and enjoys toying with her courtiers, including Blackadder. While Blackadder is outwardly respectful, he frequently expresses frustration and disdain towards her behind her back. Despite this, he remains dependent on her favour to keep his status and avoid execution, as Queenie is prone to issuing death threats or punishments for even minor slights or failures to entertain her. Their relationship is thus one of tense mutual dependency, with Blackadder constantly navigating her whims and temper to avoid falling out of favour."

It is officially the 6th of September here - happy birthday Mandy 🥳🥳 have a great one! 👊🎂

steven

I didn't know it was the sight of mayo that you hated. I thought it was the taste. Sorry 😊

Mandy Cane Lane

That was actually a great description of it! Chat GPT for the win! -- What can I say? Sometimes I am on fire and sometimes my brain is powered by a hamster with a whole lot of levers and buttons with no manual. 🤭 -- And I won't say anything about XFMs because I want you to watch tomorrows. So what I will say is thank you very much dearest Rusty 💚💛🩷

Mandy Cane Lane

Thank you very much Benji!!! 💚💛🩷 And I may have been consuming more caffeine than usual 🤭😅

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHAHHAA! I like that! Trick or treat does seem a bit outdated 🤭

Mandy Cane Lane

Thank you! But this still made no sense to me. It looks like a set of rules to a complicated card game 😅

Mandy Cane Lane

You lovely humans lost me but I am glad you are getting along 🤗

Muggins

Hey, guys. I'm sure some of you are already aware of this, but today (friday) is a big day for someone who is a little bit special to many of us. I think at least a few - if not most of you will agree with me - that it is certainly a day to be celebrated. Today marks another milestone for an amazingly talented and creative person who over the months and years has brought us so much joy. 🤗 At times without even knowing it they have become a best friend who we've never met, who picks us up and gets us back on our feet if we ever find ourselves feeling down, and never fails to leave us still smiling even long after we're done listening. So later on this evening I'm going to be raising a glass to celebrate, and maybe one or two will consider joining me in being grateful for having had them impact our lives, and in feeling so blessed that we have had the chance to make THIS briefest of cameos in theirs. All I know for sure is that I for one consider myself fortunate to be able to enjoy one more of my own trips around the sun being enhanced in their company, albeit from afar. So here's to you, and Happy Birthday Roger Waters! 😘✨ https://youtu.be/4cia_v4vxfE

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHAHAHAHAH!! BEST COMMENT EVERRR!!! 🤣🤣 💚🩷🩵

Danny

That's why we don't use it no more lol those old coins you often hear in shows set around this time period and onwards till they changed it hundreds of years later

Mandy Cane Lane

Hahaha, in true Mandy fashion, I read that wrong! Lol. Thought that was all for Roger Waters! 🤭 Thank you so very much Stanley!! That is beyond sweet of you and I am very grateful for your words! It reaches my soul that I could help anybody, even in the smallest way. 🩵 You all mean so much to me and give me so much joy, help and purpose! 🥹🥰✨️

Danny

Lol we was discussing music groups with kinds of old money in there name.

Muggins

Eh, whoops. Well this IS embarrassing. 👀 I've only gone and copied the wrong post in to the wrong place.. Don't you just hate when that happens.🤣 He's going to be SO confused when he opens his inbox. 🤷‍♂️🥴🤪🤭 🥹 Thank YOU Mandy. 🥂

🍭 Happy Birthday Mandy, have a great one 🥳🎂

Muggins

Hi Mandy, I'm back again and I know it's late now. I had been hoping that your second vid you'd teased could have been something more private than on youtube, a star post here perhapsly. Rockbusters was a fun treat though ngl and I hope we might get to play that again some time. 🙂

Muggins

I DMd you some pics with the solution to this. One more birthday gift. A tributary skit called "Rick Discovers Mandyland" https://i.imgur.com/WLlv3St.jpg 🙈 🏃 🚕💨 ❌ hic sunt dracones 💀

Carl-Fredrik L

I think about Stevie beating Brian going "Where is my money!?"

Carl-Fredrik L

Tuppence. And sixpence. Tuppence means two pence. Thruppence is three pence. Sixpence means six pence Ofc. Its only said very quickly

Carl-Fredrik L

To be serious for a minute. People that stay in abusive relationships often grow up with it, and think that is what love is. Or they stay because it feels preferable to being alone. Often times they keep attracting the same type of people, bc no one else will put up with the abuse. So then Its hard to break that cycle and learn what a healthy relationship looks like. Its f'ed up and sad, but yeah thats the pop-psyche. Ok enuff mansplaining for today. You probably knew this already and merely were expressing an emotion about it and im an idjit 🙂

Carl-Fredrik L

But you both did type it! 😆😆😆

Carl-Fredrik L

Yeah me neither. You can make it!? Well....alchemy for the win i guess???? 😆

Carl-Fredrik L

Fools gold in Swedish is cat-gold for some reason (kattguld)

Remi

Yup that pretty much sums up Nordic languages

Carl-Fredrik L

According to the national archives currency converter £1000 in 1560 was worth around 233.000 today

Carl-Fredrik L

Who knows how much her ADHD mind can take in 🤣. Im not making fun of her. Its just alot

Mandy Cane Lane

Haha, this was long ago and my memory of what I said is gone.. but yes, that is the sad truth. 😔

Mandy Cane Lane

I would love to say this made sense to me, but it didn't 😬😅

Carl-Fredrik L

You were talking about Percy staying around even when Blackadder was constantly bullying him

Superclarky666

Baldrick was holding the picture mandy 😃 . Great reaction👍🏻

Josh

That's money back in the day and YAY 100TH COMMENT SUIIIIIIIII

My big advice to teens is while you're living with your parents, save for a deposit on a house and buy a house straight away. That will set you up for life and have kids as no one regrets their kids, but everyone regrets not having any. The best time to have kids is as young as possible, especially for women as if you're in your mid 30s without kids, you most likely never will have any.... Only a quarter of births are 35+ and out of them only ten to fifteen percent are to new mothers.
