Random question of the day. What's your favourite word?

Tony Mingoia

This particular episode is very heavy on the politics, obviously, especially British politics, complete with references you will unlikely get. A lot of young Brits won't get them either. Don't worry, it's a bit of an outlier in that regard. You'll find it a lot easier to follow the rest of this series. 💙

JokerDanny

Have you stopped reacting to Phoenix Nights Mandy?

irreverend

William Pitt the Younger was indeed a former British Prime Minister, and his father was as well (Pitt the Elder). He wasn't quite this young, but he was the youngest Prime Minister, I think he was about 25.

irreverend

Flogging his servants, not frogging :) I'm afraid you missed a syllable from antidisestablishmentarianism

irreverend

Dachshunds as a breed did exist in the 1700s, although they would've had longer legs back then.

irreverend

The standing at the back looking stupid party was a joke about an actual political party we have here called The Monster Raving Looney Party :)

James

Talk to me about that accent you did at the start Mandy. I feel mocked

Tony Mingoia

A little bit of Blackadder background info that might help to explain the difference in tone: The first series was VERY expensive. It was filmed largely on location, which is expensive, largely on 16mm film (rather than videotape), which is expensive, and had a large cast, dozens of extras, and even horses. It's all very expensive. The viewing figures didn't reach numbers that might justify the cost, and the BBC commissioner at the time, Michael Grade, wasn't a big fan, and cancelled it. But he was convinced by producer John Lloyd to give it another chance, on the condition that it is dramatically stripped back to more typical sitcom budget. 2-3 studio sets, 2 cameras, small ensemble cast etc. Well the first series had been written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Rowan didn't want to continue writing, perhaps in protest at the slashed budget. Ben Elton was brought in to replace him. He was a very popular, fast-talking, stand-up comedian at the time, specialising in left-leaning political satire. It's always seemed to me that he was finding his feet with (his) first series of Blackadder, I.e. Blackadder 2, just assisting Curtis, writing witty but silly scripts, but with Blackadder the Third, had found the confidence to really put his stamp on the show. You can see in episodes like this that the dialogue is more clever and cynical than before. Like I said in my other comment, this particular episode is specifically about politics and was always going to be difficult for you. Don't worry, many of the others have political overtones but aren't anything like as intense and esoteric as this. By the way, the guy at the election that talks to the camera is Vincent Hanna. He plays himself here. He was a broadcast journalist who covered the elections on TV at the time. He's basically doing the same here, although presumably only addressing the assembled crowd, which is a silly joke.

hasty rewrite

There's a LOT of esoteric British political, historical and cultural references in this episode. I wouldn't feel too bad about feeling like much of this went over your head, almost every second sentence mentions something that non-British viewers would find obscure. Just some of the British political terminology used during this episode includes: the House of Commons, the Civil List, the Great Hall, Regent, rotten borough, by-election, returning officer, ennoblement, House of Lords, hustings, etc...it goes on. Some of these phrases are used in other country's political systems too, but even so it's not the most accessible of episodes.

jumpjet

Errr ..... Flogging not Frogging. To be whipped or lashed with a whip :-)

Rauko

The "reporter on TV" .. On UK Election nights - there's always news reporters in some dusty sports hall where the counting of votes is taking place where they are to report on the results as they come in. The format of the news reports is pretty much as you see in this episode. Oh and the guy from the "standing at the back looking stupid party" .. Anybody can stand for election in the UK. There is a political party called "The Monster Raving Looney Party" in the UK who field candidates at election times. They have .. well .. loony policies in their manifesto .. but who could feasibly be voted in and form a government (we might not know the difference in truth) .. so the "standing at the back looking stupid party" is a play on them ...

Carl-Fredrik L

I think the first episode of series three is the worst one.

Danny

Pitt The Younger, by the way, in real life was actually 24 when he became prime minister. It's just exaggerated again for comedy. The youngest prime minister in British history though. But that's ancient compared to past Kings and Queens. Queen Mary was a few days old when she became Queen and Henry VI was 9 months old. That's when a Regent takes over as a placeholder of sorts till the King or Queen is ready, like Prince George. He was Regent when his father King George III (Mad King George) went loony, but then took over as proper King when he died. So this is set in that Recency period. He was famous and generally disliked by the public for his extreme lavish spending

Danny

This is a very politically themed episode with lots of British history references, so don't worry about not getting them, the next episode is really good with another familiar face 🤐

Remi

Weiner dogs first came about in the 15th century and we're used in Germany as hunting dogs PM prime minister MP member of parliament

Remi

Is that a reward or a punishment?

Remi

On the topic of the prime minister being a child, I remember seeing a grave stone from the 1570s and the boy died at the age of 10-11 and apparently he was a bishop which I found quite interesting

Z is for Zed

How would you even use 11 times the electricity anyway? Have you been mining Bitcoin and trying to reanimate the dead?

Remi

Halloween is coming up any chance we will see you dressing in period appropriate clothes for black adder

Spacedone

Depends on if you're applying to become a Member of Parliament.

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

A lot to say, sorry if your eyes are tired, Miry. I imagine you'll be as exhausted as I am. You mentioned kids...3 school runs today 🚌. I prefer kids to the elderly and rarely get trouble but the last ones were just such annoying little bastards. 😤 *MP: member of parliament. And about the bills thing: that's just plain robbery. 😡 I'm very grateful now that it isn't a thing over here. I still just use a portable heater/fan; never use central heating myself. You mentioned beards, yeah I can look 30 with a beard. 😂 Kind of similar to how girls look taller on camera, I learnt that when I met that actress off Narnia 😂. I try to keep my hair long too. Otherwise I fell like it looks like I'm balding. Idk, what did you think? 🤔🤗

Jeffrey44

Mandy Cane Lane may be interested to know that one Taskmaster contestant has stood in an election. Tell her that.

Jeffrey44

There was that boy wizard who was popular a few years ago too.

Jeffrey44

A waistcoat was mentioned in this, although it sounded more like "west-cot" which isn't a typical 21st pronunciation (or vest as an American would say).

Mandy Cane Lane

I actually like mosr of the clothes from this period. A little elaborate, but the shapes and textures are great!

Mandy Cane Lane

Wait! I look taller on camera??? How did I not know this??? 😅😅 I haven't seen you with longer or shorter hair, but personally I don't like super short hair like buzzcuts on almost anyone. 🤪

Mandy Cane Lane

This made me laugh! My Manderstein'smonster hasn't come to life yet 😢

Benjamin Taylor-Yates

*Noted 👍 what you saw was around medium length for me. I don't let it get too long, especially the fringe. And yeah, you kinda do.

Mandy Cane Lane

There are some odd laws when it comes to royalty and that side of politics. Not truly sure what a Bishop is to be honest though. Sounds delicious with wine 🤪

Mandy Cane Lane

Did they really? Huh, thought they were newer, way to go lil weiner dogs! Love those adorable little pups!

Mandy Cane Lane

Ok, so I am to understand tjat it was just this episode 😅

Mandy Cane Lane

Lavish spending on socks? Lol. It truly is bizarre how the ways of royalty worked and lasted so long.

Mandy Cane Lane

Interesting. I got a bit lost in the politics of it all, but hoping ep. 2 is better!

Mandy Cane Lane

Anybody can? That is crazy! I wonder what the criteria is here in Argy 🤔. Thank you for explaining Jay!! 💚💚

Mandy Cane Lane

Thank you. Hopefully next episode is more understandable for me 🤪🤗

Mandy Cane Lane

Oof, great explanation Tony! Thank you kindly! 💚💚🌻

Mandy Cane Lane

Me? An accent? You must be mistaken... I don't do those 👀

Mandy Cane Lane

Noooo!!! Did I really miss a syllable? I was so confident 🥲. Thank you for all the explaining Irreverend! 💚And what contestant Jeffrey? 🤔

Mandy Cane Lane

Tony's is good, but I always loved Gazebo! 🤣 How about you Josh?

Mandy Cane Lane

You are making me want to order some chinese food. Well done! 🤣

irreverend

I didn't want to point it out, you were so happy, but it was the "ian" bit before the last ism (I think, I've not rewatched it). Given however that you've never heard the word before, you did bloody good :)

irreverend

Your preference for gazebo has left me discombobulated

Gary T

Great reaction under difficult circumstances 😃. Think the audience were high on there being another Blackadder series, or they were pumping something into the theatre. I’ve no idea what they were laughing at for 60% of the time (the obscure references etc… ). They have lunatic novelty candidates at elections in the UK, (check out “Count Bin Face”, “Screaming Lord Such”, “Boris Johnson”) so they were sort of parodying that. However, that scene wasn’t nearly as funny as the audience would have you believe, even if you know the phenomenon they’re referring to. 🙂

Yoshua Simoleit

Basically there is a long line of Blackadders, who yearn for power, but they seem to get further away from power with every season. In the first seaon, Blackadder is the son of the king hoping to gain power, in the second season he is a lord, in this 3rd season he is the attendant to royalty, often a job given to people from less important noble families, and the fourth, people from upper class families were given commanding roles in the British military above the 'common folk', but werent necessarily close to power at all. Basically the Blackadder family did not have good luck and did not achieve power, much to the annoyance of all of the bloodline throughout the ages.

2026-09-23 20:00 Great stuff Mandy, yeah a little tricky to navigate this one, but you did fine. Queenie/Miranda Richardson does appear I think twice in this series as different people so keep an eye out. Next episode for me is one of my faves of the season. Can't wait! Loved the English accent at the start - that's what it was, right? :)

I-Love-My-Brick

How did 'flogging' also come to mean 'selling'? o_0

Danel4d

Notably, great joy is added to the nation by watching some unpleasant former cabinet minister learn that he’s out of a job while standing next to a man dressed as breakfast.

Jonathan Davies

I think this season is going to be the moment when Mandy realised she doesn’t speak Spanish and English she speaks Spanish and American 😂 even I need subtitles 😂😂

Jeffrey44

That's not crazy, that's democracy.

Jeffrey44

Really I wanted irreverend to tell you but his out right refusal to do so means I will need to step up. The person I was thinking of was Al Murray, he stood for the FUKP party. Now I think about it, he probably isn't the only contestant to stand. I suspect some of the New Years Treat contestants may have done too. Hopefully, irreverend will let us know.

irreverend

Not refusal, I was unaware. Can't say what I don't know mate :P

steven

Brilliant reaction! You’re going to love this series. I don’t know why, but my favorite line from this episode was ‘Damn his duckpond!’ 🤣 Thank you, Mandy—or should we call you 'Mad Mandy' from now on? 😝🤗

Danny

I'd take a guess flogging/whipping a horse to make it go quicker, and to flog in a selling sense is to sell it on quick

Danny

Lol all sorts, his coronation cost around 25 times more than his dads, he spent a fortune on paintings and houses aswell as regular huge banquets, all the banquets and booze lead to him being very fat. Look up Brighton Pavilion aka the Royal Pavilion, that was one of the things he had built as a holiday home 😅

DriveIn

I think Mandy should be in the *sounds of Googling* Congreso de la Nación Argentina! Someone should set up the Rotten Borough of Little Buenos Aires, population: Kitana and Mandy's mom 😁

Mandy Cane Lane

HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA! Very spot on Steve! 🤣🤣 It was more like "what Americans think the British sound like" 🤪

Mandy Cane Lane

Hmmm... 🤔 I am told the next episodes are great fun. This happens to me a lot with stand up, the audience bursts into laughter over things that simply were not funny. Each to their own I guess 🤪

Mandy Cane Lane

You do as you please with your own hair ya silly goose! I have just been around enough men going bald to know that if you have hair, make good use of it because not everyone is so blessed. 🤪

Josh

Still playing catch up. Have to say this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone saying the show got better with every series. Pretty much anyone I talk to will agree that series 2 was never bettered. Series 1 is universally considered the weakest. Series 3 is always considered weaker than series 2 and series 4 was a return to form. Pretty much everywhere on the net pretty much says the same thing.

Mike

I hate to be that guy Mandy but you didn't say the word right. You said: Antidisestablishmentarism It's actually: Antidisestablishmentarianism. I'm really sorry it's just that I've seen A LOT of Blackadder.

Chillin'withSpiders

American horror story also tends to use the same actors in completely different stories and rolls each season. That's pretty good, what I've seen of it, anyway.
