kimmy

I tried watching this on a flight and was crying my eyes out 😭😭😭

Olivia

i was teary eyed for a good portion of this film but i started sobbing at the exact point that mason quinn did because both of them were fantastic in that scene but something about sadie’s performance just got me so choked up, she was amazing!! very hard hitting film and one that definitely stayed with me for a long time

Simon

It's Brendan FRASER; "Frasier" is a TV show lol

Josip Buretić

I heard nothing but good things about this movie and I wanted to watch the movie but I waited for you guys so that I can watch it with you!!and to hear that Mason Quinn shared tears makes me even more excited to watch it now

Maisie

OMG I can’t wait to watch this reaction.

Bunnie

Dana Sow

This is my first time watching this and I remember all the hype around this movie during the awards season and have always wanted to watch it but it was amazing watching it with you boys. Absolutely beautiful movie.

I'm Batman

Wait what, movie on a Monday? I'm all about it. And I'm so excited to see y'all's reaction to it. Been pushing this one since the recommendation chat started and it was my first movie I recommended on the website. I'm a bit nervous since it's a movie that I've seen people either love it or hate it. Really hope it's a movie you guys love though.

Ashley K

This movie made me weep and sob. Such a hard watch but such a powerful film.

Bunnie

I honestly could have written a whole fucking essay about this movie but I won't lol. I think this is the first time I've seen Mason Quinn cry. This movie is so depressing to watch. It touches on a lot of things that are so relevant today. Weight might have been the basis of this story, but it touches on (obviously morbidly obesity), addiction, depression, self-destruction, sexism, religion. Like Oak said, it's so extremely hard to watch someone go on a self-destructive mode. When Liz said that maybe someone is unable to save anyone, it's because it requires a two-way relationship to change. It's difficult to get off addiction, but if you want to change, you need outside resources, but also you need to be able and willing to change. You can't simply depend on anyone to help when you're not meeting them halfway. Liz wanted to help Charlie so badly, but the problem is she was also helping him in his self-destructive mode. She kept on preaching but she's contributing to the issue. But I do get that since she's been helping him so much and he wasn't willing to change, on some level she probably gave up on it but unable to leave him alone.

Ally

Watched it once in the movie theater when it came out and sobbed for more than half of it! Brendan was amazing 🖤

Shanice

I hated this movie but looking forward to your review!

LizTheOther

Well, while I'm still sniffling, guess I'll watch the John Candy doc on Prime that I've been putting off. Great watch.

Dee

Mason??? I'm shooketh! Sending virtual hugs cause I can't watch this without shedding a few tears either lol❤️

Shannon

What a reaction 🥹 first time watch for me too. I think obesity is often viewed as greedy/gluttonous, when in reality it’s more likely to be due to sadness, trauma, self-destruction, or a coping mechanism. So I loved how they portrayed this. Thank you for sharing your raw thoughts with us 🫶

star

Awwww mason quinn 💕💕💕

Gem

I had never seen this film before and i'm glad I didn't have to watch it alone. Thank you, boys x

I'm Batman

Absolutely love this movie, Brendan totally crushes it, everyone did. And I'm glad you guys spoke so highly of this movie. Seeing Mason Quinn break down like that caught me off guard but I totally understand. Also Oak, if you was to just say you didn't wanna review it I totally would've understood. Don't think anyone here would object either. If I ever need to cry heavily as a stress reliever I put on this movie. Watched it over a dozen times and it never fails to do that. Favorite Brendan Fraser role. 5/5 easily.

Ally

I’ve never understood the criticism against the way obesity has been portrayed in the movie, like people assume there’s just one right and truthful way and one wrong. Like any other addictions this is just a spectrum. Not everyone is gonna entirely recognize themselves in this like not every drug addict is the same. But we can find some common aspects about addictions. Like saying sorry all the time. I think the way they portrayed that aspect of not having control on your behavior and hurting people around you and keep apologizing for it is very realistic. It could also open a debate about how interesting is the fact that a lot of people can feel empathy for him while usually people are very harsh on other type of addicts. This movie has so many layers and so many powerful elements. Like caring about someone, wanting them to get better but also giving up and “contributing” to their death. It’s such a complex relationship, especially with family members. We could have had a whole new movie about the daughter, and Liz but the point was to show his life and how it affects everything around him. How he chose to end his life like Alan only in a slower way. I think the part that made me sob the whole movie is Brendan’s interpretation through his eyes. He couldn’t move a lot (and he portrayed the heaviness of his body wonderfully) so he had to communicate everything through his eyes. And you could see all the emotions. He did a majestic job. And I’m so happy he got recognition after Hollywood turned their back on him!

TingKarg

Saw this in theaters with my friend when it came out. We didn't know much about it going in besides that Brendan Fraser was in it... by the end we were complete messes. We sat through the entirety of the credits just crying together. Truly one of the most emotional films I've ever seen. "People are amazing."

Lauren

The absolute highest praise this movie could get is that it made Mason Quinn cry! Wow. Hugs.

CendrineBibeau

Little detail that I don't know if you guys caught ; there's a revelation near the end by Liz. She says how she tried to get her brother to eat when he was in his final moments before he decided to end everything. So there's a juxtaposition of Alan probably being anorexic or having some kind of eating disorder, just like Charlie...

Justin Russell

Well I can now officially retire that movie to the vault with two watches. That movie truly is a masterpiece but it’s one of the few movies I feel drained emotionally and mentally afterwards. This follow up calls for a 13 Going On 30 rewatch

Jordan_Sal 413

i never thought id see Quinn break on any reaction. it was almost like seeing my dad cry for the first time lol. certainly no shame for it being this movie to do it on

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

The scene when he was choking and Liz helped him and he kept saying, "I'm sorry," and crying just hurt my heart.

Maisie

As much as Brendan Fraser was amazing in this, it was actually Sadie Sink who broke me. She's just an emotional hurricane, and so that one particular moment where you see what's really in the eye of the storm absolutely wrecks you. Thank you guys for giving this movie a chance, and for the thoughtful and empathic discussions.

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

@18:28 When Charlie opened the first, it had the fruit & grain bar, a healthy snack, and in the other drawer were all different types of candy and snacks. Man, I have been in that situation so many times, and it hurts. Because I am a plus-size girl and have high cholesterol and am trying to lose weight and trying to eat healthy, that is the struggle I have. I saw a lot of stuff I do in this film. Eating habits are tough when you are trying to be healthy. Really appreciate this film 5/5 ❤

Knightmare

This was a hard watch. I'm overwhelmed.

Erlacine

I have held some resentment and anger toward my parents but when she was yelling at him it kept making me cry. Broke my heart :(

Annie Baylin

I laughed in disbelief initially [nervous mechanism] when Mason Quinn broke down in tears, and then I myself cried. The rarity of seeing him show emotion like that, holding it together for everyone when a scene in a movie gets too tough and heartbreaking, reminded me of my own father, because he's the exact same way. This movie was already getting to me, much like it was getting to the guys, it was beautiful, broken, and there was a sea of depth to it. I'm so happy I got to see this with you guys, always, always my favorite reaction channel. 😢❤️

SonjaB29

I don’t know which was worse, The Whale or Lee Daniel’s, Precious, but I’m never getting these hours back. OMG, this movie was so freaking depressing. I need a drink 🥃 like now.

Amber

This was my first time watching and I’m glad I watched it with you guys. I’m bawling. My dad was overweight and ultimately died due to complications resulting from that. I grew up begging him to become healthier, to stay with me longer. Sadie’s ‘please’ at the end broke me because that was me so many times. And Liz begging him to go to the hospital and him not wanting to go. I witnessed the same things in my life, my dad’s mobility issues and how hard it was to see the pain he was in. This was so hard but a really great depiction of these struggles and dynamics. Thank you all for speaking so compassionately about this film.

So Tired

This is my first time watching this with you guys, and wow. I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now.

Diablos Cafe

Brendan deserved that Oscar, to come out of the black hole and pull a performance like this off is outstanding

Michelle

This one is a good one to skip if you're not in the best mental space. It is so easy to self-destruct like this, even when you know you're doing it, because you just can't see your way past the pain that is burying you. It's very real for a lot of people. I'm going to go cry a little after this one, hug my cats, and tell the chunky one that he's on a diet.

Josip Buretić

Uh I finally watched this reaction 🥹🥹 I don't think that I can describe with my words what this movie was for me.... incredible acting by everyone...and to see Mason Quinn crying 😭 did make me even more emotional 😢

ImaKatPerson

Mason Quinn’s breakdown at Sadie’s “Daddy, please”? That’s a man with a daughter and loves her if I’ve ever seen one.

Magda Chonillo

Wow, it’s my first time watching this movie. I broke down so many times. And seeing that reaction at the end while I was crying, watching Mason Quinn break down like that, it tripled my tears. I’ve noticed it’s a common theme in the comments that Mason Quinn’s reaction reminded people of their fathers. Well, it made me think of mine too. My dad is quite old now, and I don’t know if it’s because of his age or his health problems, but he’s become more vulnerable and emotional. He’s started crying a lot because of his illness, something I had never seen my father do before. I suppose we all carry that inside us, it breaks us too, because maybe we also wished our fathers had shown a bit more of their vulnerability. But it seems they always try not to show it, to stay strong for us. Anyway, I guess I’m rambling. It’s a movie that truly leaves you with an overwhelming emotional hangover. I just want to end by saying that I felt like I wanted to hug Mason Quinn after seeing him cry like that 🥺😢

Alanna Meyers 🍌

I like the premise of this movie, an estranged dad and daughter repairing their relationship. I just wish it didn’t portray fatness in such a way where he’s basically eating himself to death. Fat suits are problematic on their own but the negative stereotype this movie perpetuates makes it a miss for me. No shade to anyone who enjoys this movie and if it made you cry and feel something, I’m glad you had a better experience. ☺️ Just here to state my own opinion. I wish they kept the story but changed it to a dad who was dying of a blood disease, cancer, literally so many other things. The misconception of all fat people do is sit and eat is unfortunate. Again, if you love this movie and had a good experience, I’m happy for you. All love 🫶

Tiffany

I’ve always wanted to watch this movie, but the knowledge that it was an extremely hard hitting movie always made me very hesitant. Well, today I finally decided to give it a go, and what better way than to give it a watch with you guys as well. This movie really hits extra hard personally, because I had an extremely close family member who was morbidly obese. When somebody that big gets sick, or injured, the toll it takes on their body is enormous. Then people naturally have the question of “why” and the “how” when someone get like this, and honestly? People go through traumatic situations, and the only way they’re able to self soothe, is by eating. In the sentiment that “people need people” there’s also “people need to save themselves”, and it’s the never ending loop hole of “maybe I should have done this” and “no, THEY should have helped themselves”. It’s extreme difficult. I completely get what Oak is saying during his review. I did pause a few times to gather myself, this movie was just so heartbreaking. Then at the end when Mason broke down, it made me even more sad because Mason, you never cry 😭 I wanted to jump through the screen and give you the biggest hug. It was definitely an emotionally charged movie, especially for individuals who’ve experienced the challenges of being obese or having loved ones who are this obese. I think they all did absolute stellar jobs and everyone’s acting was top tier. The story was amazing, using Moby Dick was just perfect for this movie✨ Brendon did an amazing job, he deserved every bit of that standing ovation❤️

Saw it when it came out. There was a great amount of buzz around it if you're one of those who keeps their eyes and ears on the festival circuit, and I'm one of those. Mainly for Brendan's performance. But the basis of my excitement was solely down to the man behind the camera: Darren Aronofsky. I've been a fan of his since Requiem for a dream - still my fav of his. I enjoyed the movie, however, I felt and still do after rewatching it with you guys that it's Darren's most heavy handed work, and what I mean by that is he relied too often on conveying the audience to feel sympathy for the character through dialogue that felt out of place in the moment and rather came across 'oh, you just wanted the audience to know that information,' and that impact didn't hit fully. I gathered that he wanted to portray the story as a play with his use of angles and writing and I felt that choice constricted him somewhat. The performances were great as are to be expected from any Aronofsky film. Brendan Fraser gave the best performance of his career, however, I still beleive the oscar should have gone to Austin Butler for his portrayal of Elvis. It was a three horse race between Butler, Fraser and Colin Farrell and all were fantastic, but for me Butler inched his way to the top spot. 3.7 Answers.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about the movie (50/50). I relate more to the daughter; it felt like she was telling my story. The only difference is that I let my biological father die, making sure he knew I never forgave him. He constantly sought my attention, messaging me every day, giving me updates, and asking for a visit. Until his last breath, I believe I was the last person he tried to call. I never claimed my actions were right, and even to this day, I can't say if I feel regret. He, too, left my mother and me because he wanted to live his life, jumping from woman to woman. My mother worked incredibly hard for me. We were extremely poor, to put it into visual terms, our bathroom was essentially our home. It wasn't until my mom remarried that we finally lived a decent life. When I was 20, my father reached out and wanted to reconcile. The daughter's line, "Why now do you want to be my father?" and his response, "I want to make something good in my life for once," really pissed me off. To top it off, he told me he had cancer. How dare he put that burden on my shoulders, a self-serving attempt to clear his conscience. In a sense, I suppose I am my father's daughter after all.

I resonated with Oak’s reaction to this film. This film shows not only their self-destructive behavior but also how it affects their loved ones and this movie really embodied how you don't want to abandon them but you also see how they are not willing to help themselves even when the help is offered 😔

Stephen Hert

Side note: Did you guys know that there are people out there who actually think this is a comedy? Thanks for your reaction guys. And thank you Quinn for being so open with your emotions on this one. Oak is normally the one with the emotions, so it was heart wrenching to see you break down like that. That, "daddy please", got me as well. I cried several times during the movie, but that especially was heart wrenching. I often give you guys a hard time on ratings and stuff, but we're all human. Thanks for everything you do.

Izzy

When this came out I didn’t want to watch it. I am so glad I watched it alongside you guys or else I never would’ve. Gorgeous movie. I was sobbing basically the entire time.

M

I’ve always had a tough time seeing this ever since it came out, as someone who knows how addiction is like. I spent all my teenage years dying from anorexia and then later on going through binge eating, recovered all on my own and then directly after got locked up and abused to the point of me never being able to walk again… And am in such deep depression now that I just want to give up on life cuz I can’t do anything even tho I had so many dreams in life, of dancing, running, traveling etc, and I’m just stuck in my house handicapped… So I myself just cry throughout the movie cuz I feel his hopelessness and just accepting that your life is over.

Izanne

This movie is incredibly powerful and just gut wrenching. It always makes me cry because it hits so close to home. I’ve struggled with weight my whole life, food is my comfort, my addiction. I’ve had to work through that for such a long time and I still am. But this movie does such a good job showing how addiction affects people around you, it can absolutely stand as an example for many different addictions and traumas. Wow, so glad I watched this reaction. I’ve never seen Mason Quinn lose it, ever. Just goes to show you how movies and other art mediums affect people so differently. Thanks for this reaction, it’s always a tough rewatch for me but man this movie is incredible.

Victoria

I am diagnosed with anorexia and bulimia since I was 13 because of sexual trauma. I don't think this can be changed for a cancer. He was self harming with food. I know what that is. Every time you see him eating like that is like seeing an addict with a needle or like looking at someone self harming with a blade or a lighter. It is not about fat people. It is about trauma, addiction, depression, self harm, pain and reconciliation. It is a complicated movie with complicated characters with complicated lives. I find that extremely interesting because it is real. I was afraid to see this film for so long... I've been able to see it only through your reaction for the first time. Because even if everything is very different, it's also very similar to what I've been through or felt in my own life. Brendan is absolutely magnificent. I always think about two quotes from Old Boy "Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone" and "Even though I'm no better than a beast, don't I have the right to live?" Thank you guys for this reaction, I don't think I could have seen it alone.

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

I put off watching your reaction to this movie for a whole six months because I knew it would be really heavy, even though I hadn’t seen it myself. But I finally decided it would be a good opportunity to experience it with you. From the comments, I knew this was probably the first time (or maybe the second) that Maison Quinn completely broke down and cried on camera, which only made me more curious (I just love seeing grown men openly cry while watching something — I can’t help it). And yeah, the movie was very tough… honestly even uncomfortable, but I think that’s the whole point. Every actor absolutely delivered incredible performances! By the end, I was in tears, just as I expected, and when I finally got to Maison Quinn’s breakdown, it really finished me off — just like it did for so many others. Brendan Fraser 100% deserved the Oscar for this role!

*Disclaimer: I am agnostic* As the main character asks us to do, let me be honest.. I love coming back to this movie reaction.. it's colour graded well, the sounds of the rain are beautiful in the background, which also adds to the dreariness of the situation; The orchestral music accompanies the emotional parts so well, the characters/actors/actresses were top tier, but most of all.. the idea of having a main character who is an AUTHOR being told about THE BIBLE is something I would have never thought of in my life; The bible (to me) is just another book written by another man, but it is THE MOST POPULAR BOOK OF ALL TIME. I thought this idea was great to explore in a movie.. and a little annoyed I never thought of it, as it is glaringly obvious. Now, I am not one to be confident in front of a camera, the main character showed vulnerability of the highest extent, but so did MQ. I'd just like to say what great symbolism occurred in that moment.. One man fell to his knee (MQ), He had a brother to his left (Answer), One to his right (Oak), And another behind the scene (DD). -------------------------------------------- Haiku Version: Man fell to his knee, A mate to the left, one right, And one at his back. --------------------------------------------
