This is an amazing One-Two punch of the first two episodes, they really started strong. I saw a LOT of people trying to figure out why Carol seems to be such an outlier compared to these other five people. Why is she, and she alone, freaked out? I've seen some very interesting theories that analyze the different cultural backgrounds of each person and the unique way that American society has a fixation on "individuality" that a lot of other cultures don't. But I actually saw one theory which was a lot simpler: Carol is (possibly) the only one who SAW it happen, because she may have been the only one awake. It was already nighttime for her in New Mexico, so in Africa and Asia it would have been the middle of the night. Everybody would have been asleep in bed. Even Peru is an hour or two hours ahead of NM time, so if it was 9PM for Carol it was 10 or 11 for Kusimayu. it's not unreasonable to think she was already asleep by then. If they missed the spasming and the falling down and everything that PANICKED Carol last episode, it's much less shocking. They went to bed, and they woke up to their friends and loved ones acting differently, but without the jarring shock of "OHMIGOD WHAT'S GOING ON ARE YOU OKAY ANSWER ME WHY ARE YOU HAVING A SEIZURE?!?!" I think that helped me understand their different reactions, because they didn't have the solid BREAK that Carol. Carol experienced a horror movie happening in real time, whereas they went to bed peacefully and woke up in a sci-fi hivemind.

I’m with Carol. Don’t take away my free will. If a person is without the freedom of choice, then the utopia is meaningless. I’m very curious to see how this plays out.

I think I’m already getting a feel for the big question of the show, and that is “should people have free will when the free will causes harm to others?” I believe people should always have free will at the end of the day. The ability to choose (which “they” don’t have, as seen in this episode) is a vital part of being human, and individualism plays a big role in society progressing. It kinda makes me wonder why a distant alien/alien race wanted to send out a signal that erases free will. It’s almost like they are turning the human race into mindless workers or fodder. I can’t wait to keep watching! The story just sucks you in

Yep, screw all that. I'd wanna remain me, same with my family and friends as well. I'm with Carol 100%. Just don't know how we would go about it in getting everyone back, or if it's even possible. As for Severance, I was out by I think episode 5 of the 2nd season. Just couldn't finish it, season 1 ending I thought I was hooked and tried to stick it out but I just lost all interest in it, show just wasn't meant for me, this show is much more intriguing to me.

I'm going to be straight up with you, Batman. If it weren't for badd medicine, I would have never watched Severance. I would have stopped watching by episode 1, to be honest; it's just to much for my brain. Too much weird shit was happening.

The more that I think about it, the more this show almost has a "Rapture" vibe to it. Like, the Joined are the people who have been raptured and, according to them, what they're experiencing now is heavenly. Carol was not raptured, and there's the fear of the unknown that she's facing - as in, fear of what happens after she "dies" and becomes one of the Joined, as someone who doesn't believe in an afterlife. Probably a reach, and I feel like I'm not explaining my thought process well, but basically, Carol doesn't want to "die" and go to "heaven" because she isn't convinced it actually exists, or something? My brain is fried today, y'all, just go with it.

I'm thinking this one might have been filmed before they posted the reaction for the first one since the first two episodes were released together and the guys might have wanted to get ahead of things a bit. But we'll know for sure with 1x3 if Quinn refers to her as "Ray" next time! Haha

Yeah so far it definitely seems to be the main philosophical theme. Everything is nice, no war, no racism, etc but everyone is the same and individual minds don't exist anymore, so it is a fair price to pay for peace ?

That's a good point. The other more obvious reason I guess is that she apparently has no family. The others don't want to lose their loved ones even if it's not truly them anymore, they're deluding themselves because they still look and sound like their family so they are clinging to that. I don't think it has anything to do with culture though.

"Living it up" IMO is meaningless if you are alone. If you are only surrounded by the "Joined" people then it's the same as people saying Chat GPT is their friend. If you have sex with one of the Joined (at the level they're portrayed now, with 0 individuality) then it's the same as using a sex doll IMO. It's all empty. (I'm writing this comment while listening to your review and DD just mentioned chat GPT too 😅) I'm wondering if as the story progresses we'll see some people whose bodies end up fighting back the virus and they might regain some of their individuality? 🤔

Rewatching for the first time, and I just noticed that the hive gave Sorcia a wig. The lady in the bathroom was curling it, and Sorcia's real hair is much shorter. Im guessing they thought Carol would like her better with longer hair? Like, it just shows how manipulative they could be. I just thought it's a cool small detail to add.

both of your comments are exactly right. And every answer to that question would be different because everyone's lives are different. A privileged person would say no to the hive, while a person who is poor/struggling, under oppression, etc would most likely say yes.

The only reason it's great for them is because they still retain their individuality. It seems like the hive mind is at the beck and call of the individuals, one of whom is milking it for all it's worth. LOL "Oh it's so great it's like utopia" but what if none of them were individuals.. It's not gonna be great for someone who's part of the hive mind. They aren't gonna be having 15 super models and Air Force One. LOL

I would ask you to consider why you always have to see everything as an attack and why you always assume that everything that is said about women is an attack on women as a gender. This is absurdly ridiculous. What's happening in this show right now.. Someone IN REAL LIFE has done this to society where it concerns men and women to where women seem to think (and men as well, to a much smaller amount) that they and men are adversaries who are constantly at war, and everything is a battle. Women are sex toys in this episode because this dude found the opportunity to be Hugh Hefner. You completely miss the entirely of modern culture which portrays men as complete baffoons and idiots in every role they have on television just about. Just put down the freaking axe. Just stop. We are not at war. But, if you want to see something where men are treated as sex objects, there's an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Angel One where this happens. The reason why you see a lot of women used as sex objects and not men is because men and women are designed differently. Men and women see sex differently. They experience sex differently. We are not the same and this "virus" that's been in play in REAL SOCIETY has fooled the mainstream into thinking that we are the same. We are not the same. And you're only angry when things are portrayed differently because of this. If that never happened you would never get angry about this. Please calm down and stop warring with men. This is the first time I have seen in the longest time anything like this, but the reason is quite simple, and if the "real life" Pluribus virus didn't infect every modern woman on the planet for the last 66 years you wouldn't have any issue whatsoever with a show showing some wannabe Hefner taking advantage of the hive mind. You have no idea how many relationships are destroyed by this mentality and how many people of both sexes are lonely because of this mentality. We are not your enemies. Stop assuming that everything is an attack.
