Jonathan: Hey! Can you guys shut the hell up? I don't why that part makes me laugh so much, probably because i was screaming at the screen saying the same thing. 😂

I wonder if Venca/Henry is going to try and make Holly what he though El was going to be for him. I just cant see him needing another Will 2.0 this far in the game. But I knew it had to be him, and am surprised with everything going on, Mike and Nancy didn't even consider anything nefarious right off the bat. Henry did this with El too, made her feel safe and cared for back at the lab. I'm with Hopper on this, literally all El does is act on emotion. She's never cared about being safe or flying under the radar, that's why Hopper has had to constantly remind her for 5 seasons. There is definitely a better way to go about it (they both go to the extremes, him locking her away and her going full throttle) but now that she has her power back, she's back to thinking she's invincible. She just needs to hope Vecna isn't also super juiced up now. Or that her powers don't leave again in the next battle, if it isn't the final battle. I'm also on Steve's side with Dustin. He's making incredibly stupid decisions with people he knows will hurt him. They're not verbal bullies who occasionally shove. They were going to kill Eddie. I don't know if it's survivor's guilt mixed with hormones or what. But Mike and the rest of the crew were right, he needs to pick a battle (preferably the main battle) then he can deal with the bullies. Or at least learn self defense first, he's lucky they only threw punches. Dustin gets pissed that he's the go to for electrical things when he made sure that was his only use for 4 seasons. When the gang didn't care, he got pissy. Communications and brains, that's his contribution. If he's not going to help with that, I don't get why he is even there. I honestly didn't even miss his absence. And also, why is no one acting like mom and dad are/were on the brink of death? Everyone got the news then just moved on. Even their own kids. Will was the only one acting like the big thing it is, that Holly was taken. You'd think the core group would try to act more worried knowing some of what Will went through and is still going through. But nothing.

Holly holding onto the bed while the Demi Gorgon tried to pull her into the ceiling has Poltergeist vibes. I like the teaming up of Will and Robin. He needs someone who believes in and empowers him and gets him off the sidelines.

What is sad about Dustin's story is he's literally gone against what Eddie made him promise before they went on that final mission - he's changed. Eddie told him to not ever change. To always be who he was - not turn into this cynical, angry loner, poking at the world. It's not just in appearance Dustin has become Eddie. I know the Duffers have said Eddie isn't coming back but I don't think Dustin gets his head on straight unless Eddie's ghost smacks him upside the head and tells him to knock it off.

Ginger

If you guys ever react to A Wrinkle in Time movie, please react to the 2003 tv movie version which is far superior than the 2018 version. The 2003 is more book accurate. I read the book when I was 8.

I love the pairing as well because he’s still hiding a massive part of himself and getting to know her and learning she’s gay gives him that added connection and depth to their potential friendship moving forward, since she’s the only person in their circle who can FULLY understand him.

elena

The friendship between Will and Robin is something I didn’t know I needed, their scenes together are so sweet

To me it looked like the slimy lump that Dr K was working on in episode one, came from that big wall. I think the military definitely know it’s there.

Seeing Dustin and Steve not get along is really killing me this season…but I understand that Dustin is going through it. Love the whole radio show idea with Robin, I thought that was such a cool way of letting the audience know what’s been happening. El definitely seems like she’s going to kick ass and I’m so here for it!!! She’s been training! Also Will’s storyline is getting SO interesting. I’m so excited to see where they take his character…

Jeff K.

Absolutely. And similarly, "Mama Bear Karen Wheeler" is not something that I knew I needed or wanted, but I fucking love it.

Commented on episode 1 about the similarities between Will/Vecna and Harry/Voldemort, and this one just reinforces what I'm seeing as parallels between this season and Harry Potter, with, in this episode, Holly standing in for Ginny Weasley in Chamber of Secrets (well, I guess technically that started in the first episode). Will (Harry) has a best friend, Mike (Ron), whose little sister, Holly (Ginny), mysteriously starts communicating with Henry (Tom Riddle), without realizing it's actually Vecna (Voldemort), and is taken into a mysterious and seemingly impossible place to find and enter behind the wall in the Upside Down (Chamber of Secrets). I mean, obviously none of these ideas were original to Potter but man, I can't stop seeing the similarities now (not mad about it, or calling it deritivate in any way, to be clear; really enjoyed these first two episodes and I love this show so damn much, so just making it clear, I'm not disparaging it or anything like that, just dawned on me there are some serious parallels to the point where I really do wonder if the Duffers were either intentionally or subconsciously doing that).

Cristy

Absolutely, it's my fave part of this season so far.

Cristy

Thanks for the double drop! That intro is by far the scariest and most well done for me. Loving Will and Robin's friendship. I love how every season they give us different groups and character dynamics and this is one I didn't know I needed.

I'm Batman

Gotta be honest, these first 2 episodes just didn't do it for me, the next episodes I think did a lot better in making me believe that there are high stakes. And sorry, but I'm not a fan of establishing Vecna as the big bad and throughout season 4 they display him throughout the episodes as a major threat then in season 5 it feels more like a step back and it's just essentially hyping up his character. I have a lot of nit picks but overall I still enjoy the character interactions, and the quality of their performances. Can't judge the story as a whole since we still have 4 episodes to be aired. But yeah not saying these 2 episodes were necessarily "bad" but I was a tad bit underwhelmed. Maybe my expectations were too high for the opening episodes though since this is the final season.

Josip Buretić

I just watched yesterday those episodes with my son and after we were finished I said him the same stuff you wrote here I totally agree with you.

Alex

This episode hits you like a freight train. Probably one of the best episodes of the entire series. Love that we didn't have to wait for this. I watched episodes 1-3 Wednesday night, and then watched 4 last night, and at Thanksgiving dinner I saw you guys posted these literally the next day after release! So last night watched episode 4 and then watched your reactions for 1 and 2. Really great.

I'm Batman

I was thinking I might be one of the only ones to feel this way. Here's hoping part 2 is better and part 3 goes out with a bang.

Ryan Holmes

That wasn’t a misdirection you guys were just reaching

Ginger

I just discovered that the Stranger Things play: The First Shadow, offers valuable insights into the history of Vecna and Brenner and explains the origin story for the TV series. It explains how Henry lost his humanity and became evil at such a young age. I recommend reading the plot on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_Things:_The_First_Shadow

Jeff K.

By the way, guys: not sure if you remember but with some of the Wrinkle in Time discussion, that’s the book Ted Lasso gave to Roy Kent that helped him become a better leader and buy in early in season one, as well, in case y’all don’t recall that.

Eboe Thrasher

Vecna was hurt bad at the end of Season 4 and the last of his energy went into opening the cracks in the town. He has been laying low and recovering which is why they are hunting for him so hard. Of COURSE it is a step back for those very same reasons. Steve even addresses it when saying that he might not even come back after how much they hurt him the last time. So it seems like he is just marshaling his strength for the big push.

Eboe Thrasher

My spouse didn't thin the 2003 one was very accurate at all and was far more pleased with the 2018 version even thought it wasn't perfect. Trust me, we own probably 5 copies of it including the graphic novel, and multiple versions of the whole Quartet as well as the other quartet that goes along with it with Meg's kids. My spouse is so obsessed with L'Engle that we have one of her books that she used in college, I can't remember exactly what it was now but I think it was a book about Whitman and maybe Keats? And there are copious underlinings and notes in it.

Eboe Thrasher

Dustin is going through depression and grief, and this is his way of coping with it. He feels like it is his job to take over for Eddie to honor him. Grief will do the weirdest of stuff to you, it can remold your brain. Not to mention, Dustin SAW it and was there, which puts it in the realm of PTSD. Now we are looking at not just grief, but survivor's guilt, too. it is far more complicated than him "getting his head on straight".

Eboe Thrasher

I don't know if Henry senses some latent abilities in these particular kids, or what? I wonder sometimes if the ones with the hoses are not providing him with lifeforce or something in order for him to do his powers. And maybe that is why he has picked out so many children, so he can get his strength back. Of course El is gonna run on emotion, think of how terrible her childhood was. She's a bundle of trauma dramarama. And once we knew about the Henry incident, it just was even worse. And for the only love she got was to be coming from "papa?" Damn, it is surprising that she is as well adjusted as she is, she is lucky that Hop is doing the best that he is capable of doing. And Joyce is helping too, now. But after last season, and with Henry laying low to recuperate, El is getting herself all prepared for something that hasn't been happening, and that must also be frustrated. She is chomping at the bit to destroy Henry. Her being a bundle of live wires doesn't trouble me at all. I would expect nothing less. She can only handle it as much as she is able to at any given moment. With Dustin, it has to be survivor's guilt + PTSD + grief in general. He's a wreck and he can't deal with it, and he is locking it all up inside of himself and not sharing with his friends, probably ashamed of it. And he certainly got a few licks in against them in the graveyard. He isn't the helpless Dustin we would have seen in seasons past. I feel like the group's full priority is getting Holly back. All they could do about their parents was hope the doctors did the best they could, did their jobs, because nobody was gonna help them with Holly, so their efforts and energy had to be focused on her.

Eboe Thrasher

That's good that you've got a bit of a breather before the next installment but then it will be 3 episodes at xmas and then the finale on New Year's, so if I know y'all, you'll feel the need to have to push through all those, haha. We thank you all for your hard work.
