Fantastic. Also: I know y'all are an episode behind, but just as an FYI, the season finale is releasing early on Tuesday night, so I'd recommend either knocking 1x8 and 1x9 out together, or just being extra mindful about avoiding spoilers for a little longer than usual.

Lauren

I couldn’t wait until you guys watch this one! So excited!

Sharpgirl

I don't know if it was the Independence Day type of music with all the fireworks if there was any hidden meaning in that but I think Carol is up to something. I think her "Come Back" move is a ploy.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

What Jeff said - you guys might have to shuffle your schedule to film your episode 9 reaction before you are spoiled for it because it'll be dropped early. Would hate for you to get spoiled!

Badd Medicine

We will be doing a double drop most likely on the final 2.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Oh I know you'll do a double-drop 😃 - but the finale won't be dropping next Thursday or Friday - it's going to air this coming Tuesday! That's what Jeff and I are saying - if you wait until next Thursday evening or Friday morning to film, the finale will have been out for over two days when you do.

Jeff K.

Yep. Obviously this isn’t on the same “global phenomenon” level as Stranger Things but even thinking about the first batch of episodes for the final season, it wasn’t even 24 hours before images of the huge cliffhanger were everywhere online. People can’t resist at this point. I have a feeling some major spoilers are gonna be out there by Christmas for this season finale.

Evan

A lot of the modern audiences have too low of an attention span. This has always been how Vince tells stories. This, like most Vince shows are a character study. The main plot is just a backdrop for the characters and their development. I remember a lot of people also complained that the first season of Better Call Saul was too slow as well. These episodes and moments are there to make later moments in the show hit a lot more.

MynamecouldB

This show is not boring at all. The process and the journey these characters take is what makes it great.

From the beginning of this series, the shots in here have been giving me the last man on earth show. Epic show, by the way

After this episode and the insight we get into Manousos, I saw a great one-shot description of how he and Carol each view the Hivemind: Carol sees them as a conversion camp. Manousos sees them as colonizers. The Hivemind are all smiles and outwardly polite and caring to Carol, but they completely disregard her desires and their stated goal is to change who she is to conform to what THEY want. Just like the conversion camp she was sent to as a kid. The Hivemind are generously offering Manousos physical supplies and support for whatever he needs, but none of it is theirs to offer and they are just presenting somebody else's skills and work as their own. Just like any conquering people who claim a territory and begin distributing its wealth. ------------------------- When Carol was staring down the firework, my only driving thought was that i wanted her to choose to move. I didn't want it to miss, I wanted her to MOVE. And to see her just sit and wait chilled me.

Liam

I don't understand why Carol was freaking out. She's been alone for a few months? Not like it's been a few years

Knightmare

Where in the world is Manousos? I can't imagine he's staying with them out of free will, so I'm curious how he's being handled. Cant wait for next week's drop!

Knightmare

U.N. guidelines call more than 15 days a form of torture. I imagine it's a lot different when they're all part of an alien hivemind that's cut you off, too. Huge difference between choosing to spend 15 days cooped up in your room willingly under a blanket vs being forced into it as punishment.

Jeff K.

Yeah, there's a reason that solitary confinement is such an enormous punishment for prisoners. It can genuinely drive you insane. Humans are social creatures. We crave any sort of contact, by nature, even introverts. Loneliness is brutal and you arrive at that place more quickly than people probably realize.

Jeff K.

It took me way too long to realize you were talking about the actual holiday and not the movie.

ZuZu

I'm curious if they took him all the way to New Mexico or if they respected his wish to get there on his own and just took him to the nearest one.

Rena Unnie

I enjoy a lot that show, it is a pleasant surprise that I randomly started to watch because I saw you guys reacting to it. I don't mind the slow pace either. ^^

MarisoL

I'm really curious now how Manusous will take Carol's relation with the hive! If only Carol had known that he was on his way, she might have had a stronger fortitude. Also I don't mind the paceing of the show, it's like a comfort show I look forward to it.

Lauren

I was on the edge of my seat in this episode because I rooted for Manousos so bad. My fear is that he journeyed so far just to be rejected by Carol.

Lauren

Being completely alone…no interaction whatsoever will drive most normal people insane. I myself am an introvert, but I still need to communicate with people from time to time in order not to get depressed.

Pop n Lock

I loved the dichotomy of Carol and Manousos. Carol still takes advantage of the things she claims to be so adamantly against, but Manousos is actually 100% committed and never wavers.

Siw Smith

I just hate this take because it's so condescending. I like the show so far, but simply calling anyone who doesn't lesser than is such bullshit. Let's not be like Rick & Morty fans, it's insufferable.

Evan

I'm not being condescending nor am I saying people who don't like it are lesser at all. What I meant was the show is not for everyone and that people that don't like the slowness are never gonna be satisfied with the show because that is what it is.

micah

come on man

Siw Smith

Imo you are. Not liking the show doesn't mean you have a short attention span. Guess we'll agree to disagree

Evan

I never said that as well. I never once grouped up everyone who doesn't like the show. Having a shorter attention span is also not an insult. I have a short attention span for some things as well. There's nothing wrong with it. That doesn't mean you're better or worse than people with life longer attention spans. It just means they might be better off doing something with their time, they'd personally enjoy more.

DustinEatWorld

The series looks unbelievably beautiful—the camera movements, the color grading, the scenery—everything is captured so beautifully. By the way, his journey really reminded me of Cast Away.

DustinEatWorld

I think she wasn’t just bored, but lonely—very lonely. So lonely that she could barely see any meaning left in life. And the rocket was, in a way, the coin that decided for her—a final attempt to try once more, to still have hope, to somehow make everything turn out right.

Aubrey

Right?! No Survivor slander! My daughter and I started bingeing it during COVID, and now we're hooked.

Aubrey

This is a great summation of their views!

Aubrey

First, just let me say that if this show has taught me anything, it's that a) I'm a true introvert and b) I probably need therapy lol. I'd be living in libraries, taking road trips, visiting all the parks and museums, watching all the movies, learning photography, astronomy, painting, etc etc. Multiply this by the expanse of our planet and I'd keep myself occupied for a while. I'm sure if I was forced into pure isolation, as Carol has chosen, it would eventually get to me, but that was the choice she made. I think this episode is brilliant because it quietly shows us how isolation creeps in for everyone at different stages of life--the transition of childhood to adulthood, of divorce, of the loss of loved ones, of an empty nest, of retirement, of the golden years. On a larger scale, it shows us the erosion of colonization--the loss of identity, the loss of culture, the loss of self. My initial reaction to the message length was "oh, it's rage bait," but this episode really drives home the point of how long a life can seem without any true meaning. We're all like "omg hurry" because that's how we're conditioned to be by a modern society where everything is about productivity, efficiency, and cramming in as much as we can into our days. We all think that the immediate collapse of that would lead us to the halcyon "good ol' days," but this reminds us that those simpler days we crave were also someone else's hell. This leads to the question of can we ever actually reach that idyllic state of happy/content/perfection?

Aubrey

I should add that I'm interested in seeing what direction the final two episodes take. The hive mind is the embodiment of the same hell that Carol is experiencing, they're just not self-aware. They only have one goal--survival. But to what end? As a collective, they are omniscient, removing any imperative to learn/grow/create, so what is the point of their existence? Carol still has free will. She can still learn/grow/create, and she can still connect with others if she so chooses. Isn't the meaning of life about experiencing life? I'm waiting to see if that realization will snap into place when she connects with Manousos and if that won't be the key to saving humanity.

MarisoL

About the message recording, she probably also doesn't mind hearing another human voice even if it's a recorded message.

Aria Isara

Yeah, but at some point the dedication goes into stupidity, and if he accepted treatment then what was the point of never wavering...

Aria Isara

I think it's not just that she was alone for a few weeks and the physical isolation but it's knowing that everybody else is gone, mentally speaking it's just the hive, even if people were still around her it's not even real individuals so that's depressing.

Aria Isara

The way she cried at the end, I don't think Carol is that good of an actress 😅

Sharpgirl

My next boy cat I'm naming Manousos

Aria Isara

I'm ambivert, also I'm never bored, when I was a teen there was always kids who were bored during the holidays and I never understood that lol. Some people just have no real interest in anything. If I have no access to tv, books or the web I might just sit outside and watch nature 😅 Sadhguru said that no one should ever be bored because even just looking at a leaf could make you marvel and could occupy you for hours. Sometimes I sit outside and I see an interesting insect, or cloud, or rock lmao, it would be really hard to make me bored. And I don't mind being in hermit mode. That being said, if I was Carol, I would be depressed knowing that mentally speaking almost everyone is gone. All the people around are like AI in meatsuits. I'm gonna read a nice book but then I have no one to talk to about it, not even online. I'm gonna visit a museum but I have no one to share the interesting things I saw with. It would feel empty. It would make me want to cry 😟

Aubrey

I can totally see that, and yes, I would be freaking out if all of humanity had been assimilated like a bad Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. I personally would have been in full researching and problem solving mode. I guess my point was that if I'd chosen to stop and isolate myself from the hive or others like me, as Carol had, I'd still have so much more I'd want to experience, for my own edification.

DTGstl314

The Georgia O'Keefe painting that Carol stole, Bella Donna, would probably fetch in excess of $10 million at auction. In the real world, anyway.

Derek A

lol Easy on Quinn, Oak. My first thought also was "I consent". Clearly she was at some kind of breaking point...it was just a matter of how much.
