StephMurph

YES!!!! I am so very excited for y'all's reaction! Onep f my favorite series ❤️

So Tired

Never heard of this show but I do know it's hype, so i'm going check this out 🔥

Lauren

It’s awesome!

Lauren

As an avid fan of the original stories by Doyle, I LOVE this show! It’s so respectful of the OG content while also being very creative in its modern setting.

mdl

The show that put these two on the map. The first couple seasons are sooooo good. Each episode is incredibly cinematic as well.

Liam

Martin Freeman is the best part of the show. You guys need to watch Fargo

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

it's * so frustrating * that Oak thinks Sherlock copied Princess Bride and the other guys agreed - but it's understandable. HOWEVER. The two pill bottles, one safe and one lethal, comes from the Sherlock Holmes story "A Study in Scarlet," published in 1887, which this episode is based on. The Princess Bride was written in 1973. So The Princess Bride stole it from Sherlock Holmes, not the other way around. Also, this episode pioneered putting text messages on the screen for the audience to read without having to look at the phone itself. Welcome to Sherlock!

Curtis Rice

Awesome, excited for this journey

Kary lit et mijote

YES, that's why I came back to Patreon, for this! What a nice afternoon I'll have watching along with you ! :) :) :)

Chris B

I will stay your Patreon till the end of my days!

OH MY GOD LETS GOOOOO

Natacha P

I am SO ready for this! Haven't seen the series since it came out and only remember that I loved especially the first few seasons. I'm hoping this is a sign you'll do more British stuff, we REALLY need you to watch the Cornetto Trilogy!!!

HYYHwithNesh

This show is so goooood. My first introduction to both actors! The cuts threw me off so bad, i was like whats going on?? then remembered you might be watching this somewhere else LMAOO. I like how close to the novels it is, like WHEW WHEW

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

You gents need to find another source where you can watch this show - for some reason Hulu is putting in black space for commercial breaks - the episodes do not have those black spaces, and it's messing up some really excellent editing to have them there -- interrupting the flow of the show, which is seamless and terrific.

patricia jimjimcherie

Yall have NO IDEA how excited I am. I started this show in 2011.

Gem

YES YES YES TO CORNETTO!

Caroline

oh this series is going to be so much fun!

Mihir Joshi

Princess Bride actually took the two bottles idea from arthur conan doyle's sherlock novel named "study in scarlet" released in late 1800's.

ondraya

This isn't a series that I love as a WHOLE, but man...there are some gems here! Can't wait for the next couple episodes.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I enjoyed these. But haven't seen them since they came out. So this should be fun. The show was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. They're also well known for being in charge of Doctor Who, during some of its best seasons.

Stephen Hert

Princess Bride actually took from Sherlock Holmes. Not the other way around. Also I am in agreement with another patron here, try to find another source because those cuts aren’t there usually. They kill the flow the show. Having watched them when they first came out, they didn’t used to have those. That’s a Hulu thing.

Halle

The actor playing Sherlock's brother Mycroft, Mark Gatiss, is also one of the writers of the show.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

God he is, isn't he. Cumberbatch gets all the acclaim, but I honestly think Freeman's a better actor. (And that's saying something because Cumberbatch is excellent.)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Freeman was very well known before Sherlock for The Office (OG), but for sure this put Cumberbatch front and center in a way he hadn't been before.

Michelle

I'm hoping that this will lead to them watching Doctor Who.

ZuZu

Study In Scarlett is the basis for this episode of Sherlock.

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Wow, Charity. I am shocked about how fucking awesome this first episode is. I am hooked. The humor/comedy in this is so good and I love the side characters. Sherlock kind of gave me Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan vibes from the TV series Bones.

Megan

I will forever be grateful for Moffat creating the Weeping Angels. Not only my favorite DW character, but I think my favorite creature in any media. It was because I found out he did Sherlock that I eventually watched the show.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

They are a great villain. He also came up with the idea for the Midnight monster, apparently, and the Vashta Nerada. I love it when the monsters are more spooky than powerful ones (like Daleks and Cyberman).

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I also appreciate that they cut the horrible Mormon stuff out (not every Sherlock Holmes story is 100% awesome) and stuck with the good parts, because the good parts are SO good.

Lauren

By the way, you guys should watch Pete Holmes’ spoof of one of this episode’s scenes - it’s on YouTube and it’s hilarious - called “Sherlock Holmes Sucks at Deduction” I think.

Jecxxy

Oh thats why I keep on having misalignment with the reaction. I keep on calibrating it from time to time

Lauren

True!

Jecxxy

Meee too! The moment it drop I immediately re-subscribe 😂

patricia jimjimcherie

Yes! Sherlock, Sir Conan Doyle's, could fight. He did boxing, baritsu, and I think singlestick, but not too sure about that one. I started watching Sherlock in 2011, it is to this day one of my favorite shows, and I've been in the fandom since, I was in Sherlock (BBC) Tumblr trenches, I was part of the theories, everything. It was such a fun, fun time. I'm so happy y'all are watching Sherlock, it's so dear to me. This is also kind of what typecasted Benedict into Alan Turing, Dr Strange, and the like. Characters who are intellectuals, quietly intense, and what they lack in physicality they make up with voice and presence. I'm glad you're enjoying it! I literally showed it to all of my family and friends back in 2012 when s2 came out. I've watched it probably like 15 times whole.

Fenland Ringo

If you want to explore more early Benedict Cumberbatch, and you're willing to explore other mediums, then I highly recommend the Radio series Cabin Pressure. It's comedy gold.

Gem

You need to work out how to put your point across without being rude.

Jae

Omg Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to me! What a perfect surprise! I'm so excited you guys are doing this series! I actually had my parents watch this show with me it was so amazing!

Miss Maya

oh my goooooooood! You guys are watching Sherlock I can't believe it I am so in. This version of Sherlock is one of my all time faves and I've seen them all :)

Maisie

THANK YOU SANTA

Jeff K.

Yeah I think the guys need to be made aware moving forward that basically every plot element and character in this show is right out of the books, which are more than 100 years old. The stuff that might look familiar, in many of the instances, is because other people have taken it FROM Arthur Conan Doyle.

Megan

I would love for them to watch Monk and Psych! Two of my favorite shows! Even though Psych came way later, I can't ever watch one without the other immediately after (thanks to them premiering new episodes back to back.)

Jeff K.

Agree that they should probably watch it later, but there's one part in particular of that Pete Holmes skit that cracks me up every single time because I relate so hard to it (since it happened in THIS episode, I feel like I can point it out since they've already seen it and it doesn't relate to anything that comes later): the marks around the charging port on a cell phone. Suggesting that only alcoholics have that is wild. How many times have any of us gotten into bed, done a little scrolling with the lights already off, and THEN rolled over and tried to plug in your phone but, in the dark, you can't really see what you're doing so you might miss the port with the cable the first couple times?

Jeff K.

And Monk and Psych, obviously, are both heavily inspired by Sherlock. Basically, any fictional detective in movies/TV that uses keen observation and deduction is inspired by Sherlock. (And man do I love both Monk and Psych. Two of my all-time comfort shows that I can just toss an episode on in the background while I'm doing something else and be perfectly happy.)

Shirlene Wright

🕵️‍♂️🔎🇬🇧 I Love this series!!!

Jeff K.

One other thing about Sherlock from the books that the guys would probably be well served to know is that the character is a major coke fiend. And I don't mean the soda. (So like, in this episode all the little nods to there possibly being drugs in the flat are in reference to that.)

junkyardgod

finally watching this show for the first time with you guys that was great!! can't wait for more!

Megan

Yeah, I didn't realize until after his departure that most of my favorite episodes/creatures are from his brilliant mind. I forgot about the Vashta Nerada, I wish we had more than a one and done storyline. I personally couldn't get into the Cybermen and Daleks, they seemed less....interesting/creative. I don't dislike them, they are just one note vs the rest of the universe. I agree the spookier the better like the episode "Listen" with the knocking.

patricia jimjimcherie

Oh yeah! I didn't think to mention that because I think thats also present in the RDJ movies... I think i can't remember.

Jeff K.

Oh and I didn't even think about the fact that, just like Sherlock, Monk has a brother who's at least equally as smart, and possibly even smarter, so Ambrose = Mycroft in that show.

Jan T

This is possibly the best pilot episode for a series I’d ever seen. The first 2 seasons are terrific, but for me, the quality of the writing starts to fail from season 3 on…. Cumberbatch and Freeman are still great, but the writing, which was so outstanding in the first 2 seasons, noticeably declines. 😬

Fajar Kurniawan

As a British sitcom fan, I love the banter between these characters. And there is a special episode called 'The Abominable Bride', between Season 3 and Season 4. It's basically a movie by itself. Better watch it before jumping to Season 4

Fajar Kurniawan

This is my first introduction to Benedict, and I instantly like the actor. (I don't know his previous roles before this series) and I am glad he got more roles in movies after this series, and I love them all

Jeff K.

Yep, not to mention Freeman had already been in Love, Actually, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz before this (among others). He was the big name coming into this one, and then Benedict became the breakout star who seemingly came out of nowhere.

Jeff K.

You know, I've been pondering who I think is better between Martin and Benedict for a bit since reading your comment and I honestly don't know if I can decide. I think my final opinion is that Benedict might be able to achieve higher highs, but Martin is much more versatile.

nehushta

unfortunately this show ended up being ass imo but i was always in love with this first episode

hex1c

Never seen this show. But like the British would say, It was bloody brilliant

Aloy

NO F-ING WAY! I'm so hyped, best day ever.

FRV

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! One of my favorites!

Dani M

YAAAAAYYYYYYYYY

romai

never seen it this will be new for me too :0

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I feel the same way about the Daleks and Cybermen. They don't really interest me much as a villain. Only if they mix in well with the over all strength of the story.

Jeremy Burch

I love that your reacting to this. I've watched and read a lot of Sherlock related things and this is by far my favorite.

Ste Rawlings

This show was on the BBC and there are no commercials on the BBC so I have absolutely no idea what that crazy abrupt cut was all about!

BeckyB00b

First 3 series were great!

Kalkent

YES! I can't eloquently express how excited I am to rewatch my fav 2nd fav TV show for the umpteenth time with you guys. The first episode, A study in pink, is of course, based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story A study in Scarlet. I was immediately hooked in the very early minutes by this show - the quippy dialouge, the flashy editing, an intriguing mystery, 2 enigmatic leads and superb, sharp writing that does service to their talent. It only gets better from here! Can't wait for the journey!

Halle

They’re watching on Disney I think they have ads on Disney unless you pay for the subscription without em I think

Dani M

not quinn guessing it'd be one of the cabbies ☠️ this is why he's a ravenclaw

Mari

I love this! I have loved Benedict as Sherlock before he became big. I saw this when it was newly out. I can't believe I'm rewatching this in 2025 with the crew

gen

Agreed lol

CeeEl

Can't wait for S2E1. It's my fave episode. I still rewatch it from time to time

CeeEl

Sherlock is on Disney?!?!?

Mari

Yes, he is such a good narrator...pengwings!

AJ

This is one of my all time favorite series. Can’t wait for you to enjoy it all.

Alina B

I'm glad you started watching this series. Each episode in the first three seasons contains references and details from Conan Doyle's novels and short stories. The action is set in the present day, but because the script is based on Conan Doyle's novels, this series is much closer to the original than many films set in the late 19th century.

Ginger

I liked Answer's facial expression at the Mycroft reveal. You guys should watch Enola Holmes on Netflix. It's stars Millie Bobbie Brown from Stranger Things as Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes' younger sister.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Oh for sure - it's a running joke on Tumblr - when you're trying to plug your phone in at night and you involuntarily think "Fuck you, Benedict Cumberbatch"

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Martin Freeman can say four things at the same time without saying a word. He's unbelievably talented. Ian McKellen said he was envious of Freeman's acting prowess. Good enough for Ian McKellen is more than good enough for me.

Ashley S

Somehow I only ever watched bits of this so happy to dive in!

MannyJ

LETS GOOO

Elizabeth Green

Oak, my favorite role ever portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch is The Imitation Game. One of the most amazing movies! Mason Quinn, Answer and Diamond Dave (if he hasn’t seen it) absolutely need to see it!

Zen Reacts

Lets be honest while the RDJ Sherlock Holmes is great the dialogue in this show is next level

Isaura avalon

Yessss! Can't wait for the next episode!

Sammy

You guys starting this series is such a Christmas gift! 🤩🎄🎁 You'll love it 🫡 Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman absolutely nailed the old-married-couple dynamic of Holmes & Watson 😃 (Never thought someone could rival RDJ & Jude Law's chemistry) BC is just brilliant in this 👏 Most charming high-functioning sociopath on telly 😄

Ailene Evangelista

This show holds up so well, I’ve watched it so many times and this season especially is a classic! The chemistry between Benedict and Martin is amazing and really makes the show what it is.

Fajar Kurniawan

and they will love it even more, when they found out who played the Sherlock character

Toasted Toad

Really glad to see you guys watch this, but as others have said, you need to get your timelines in order. Whatever comparisons you’re making, either Sherlock or Conan Doyle (depending which point) was FIRST. They weren’t copying anyone else. Others copied them. I love how sharp the dialogue is, and the acting is top notch. It’s not surprising that Benedict Cumberbatch became a star off of this. And they’re not compromising with Sherlock’s personality from the books unless perhaps they’re making him even weirder. He’s so sharp eyed when it comes to solving crimes, but is completely oblivious to human interactions.

Toasted Toad

Your comparison to Princess Bride brought out the same scream as all HxH fans get when a Reactor watches HxH having watched Naruto first. NO, HxH is not like Naruto, Naruto is like HxH! Except this mistake is even worse, because you’re out by more than 100 years!

Eboe Thrasher

I tried to watch this with my spouse the other day and it feels so dated with some of the little transitional shots that they do. Plus, while I like intelligent characters, Cumberbatch is so smug I wanna slap him silly. It almost feels stilted. I'd love to see them cover Luther.

soybeanz11

Became a member to watch this with you guys! XD Love this show

Tina

Since nobody said it yet, Cumberbatch did a lot of theatre and radio stuff before this. It earned him nominations for an Olivier Award (equivalent to the Tony) and a BAFTA (equivalent to an Emmy). Sherlock was his breakthrough, but it’s not like he wasn’t a well known actor. If you want to laugh yourself off your rocker, check out the radio series Cabin Pressure. It takes a while to get into it, but when you are, lemons will never be the same again. I look for them in every Dr Strange movie….

Tina

I was in those tumblr trenches, too. Alas I broke off abruptly at a certain point, and could never go back. But I’ll try to rewatch with Badd Medicine for a few episodes at least.

Jacqueline Hahn

SO glad you're doing these! It was brilliantly done. They actually stick very closely to the original stories, Watson WAS in Afghanistan... it's superb! And bugger Downey & Jude Law! If you want the "original" Sherlock Holmes, look up the series with Jeremy Brett
