So Tired

Perfect timing 🙌🙌🙌

episode 8 really just pulls at the heart strings. with the forks episode you get a glimpse of some of the emotional abuse that natalie specifically went through. since we see her being the one trying to manage her mother and walk on egg shells and the slight parallel from forks where donna literally says fuck you to sugar versus in this episode singing baby i love you. like just wow the emotions. and sugar talking about how now she's so scared of the people she loves and the people who obviously love her will leave her and she's not doing enough. just my heart omg, i def think they need more healing and growth with nat specifically because i don't think nat fully fully trusts her yet, but it was amazing that donna could finally be there for her daughter, because nat didn't even know if she could rely on her in this moment. but in a funny moment i think a marcus/nat labor episode would've been super cute and funny

Shapiro's offer isn't precisely a promotion - Sydney is already the CDC at The Bear. In fine dining restaurants, the CDC (chef de cuisine) usually runs the kitchen on a daily basis, but they still report to the executive chef, who is frequently also the owner. Some executive chefs are more hands on than others - Carmy is the executive chef of The Bear, and he's obviously very hands-on in the kitchen (Natalie runs business operations as one of the partners). Shapiro was the CDC at Ever, and he reported to Chef Terry, the executive chef. He will be the executive chef at the restaurant he plans to open, but he says that he wants to be more hands off on the day to day operation of the kitchen. The executive chef gets final say on the menu and has full veto power, but in the kitchen Shapiro is offering to Syd, she would have a lot more autonomy than she currently has at The Bear.

Pete probably didn't answer his phone when Donna called because he was in the middle of a flight and didn't get the call.

as someone who has a very complicated relationship with my mother, 3x8 was hitting haaaard, especially when Sugar says "I would make myself sick to make you happy", literally a gut punch.

Guys - the Christmas episode is called Fishes - the episode with Richie staging at Ever is called Forks. At the end of the last episode we saw all of the folks at The Bear putting their phones silent in their lockers - this was something that was established as a rule in an earlier episode - it's why Marcus missed all of the calls about his mom. I wonder if Nat had let the call to "The Bear" go through, she might have been able to get Carmy or Richie or anyone else she needed. Of course, if she did that, we wouldn't have this episode, so 😉 As the daughter of a mentally-ill, traumatized mother who * never * tried to get better and * never * apologized, this episode is a bit of catharsis for me, even if it is fiction.

Apparently, if you hang out on the set you'll eventually get an acting part. William Reilly (Uncle Gary Fak) is the show's Chicago Train Authority Consultant. Ricky Staffieri (Ted Fak) was Chris Storer's assistant during the first season and he had good chemistry with Matty so a role was created. Paulie James (Chuckie - who is working the window with Ebra and Chris) has never acted before and is the owner of Italian sandwich shops called Uncle Paulie's Deli which has three locations in Los Angeles and one in Vegas. Adam Shapiro (Chef Adam Shapiro) is primarily an actor but he has a side food business called Shappy Pretzel Co. that sells soft pretzels.

It wasn't Chris Storer's plan to have Natalie have a baby but Abby got pregnant between filming seasons 1 and 2 so it became part of the story. Abby gave birth to her baby before filming season 3 and says she studied the video her mum made of that event to prep for this episode.

DTGstl314

Yep... when they filmed all of Natalie's scenes in S2 showing her pregnant, Abby Elliott was actually pregnant. She was wearing a prosthetic to film all of her scenes up to this episode for S3. It was actually her second child - she had her first child in 2020. Also, completely unrelated but somewhat tangential, Abby comes from an acting family - her father is Chris Elliott, who played Roland Schitt on the series Schitt's Creek and was a regular performer on Late Night with David Letterman in the 1980s, and her grandfather was a comedian named Bob Elliott. They are the first (and thus far only) family in which three generations have all performed on Saturday Night Live - Chris and Abby were both cast members, and Bob appeared in a Christmas episode in 1978. Chris was only on the show for one season (1994-95), and Abby was there for four seasons (2008-2012). She has a younger sister who is also an actress. Both she and JLC completely nailed their parts this episode - their mother/daughter dynamic felt incredibly authentic.

DTGstl314

As you noted, the actor who plays Adam Shapiro is named... Adam Shapiro. Both he and Chris Zucchero perform using their real names (Chi-Chi is his nickname), and in Zucchero's case, he's basically just playing a fictionalized version of himself. Also, the guy in S2E5 who got arrested at the house party for setting off fireworks (Kyle) is a production assistant on the show with no acting experience, but the showrunners thought he was hilarious so they gave him a small goofy bit part. He actually participated in a reaction of the episode he appeared in on another popular reaction channel based in Chicago, because the reactors on that channel are friends with him (James Swanberg) in real life. It's super meta watching someone on a reaction channel reacting to themselves on screen.

Aubrey

No way! I had no idea that she's Chris Elliott's daughter. That's so cool!

DTGstl314

I wonder if The Bear still has a phone? One of The Computer's recommendations in S3E5 was to get rid of the restaurant's landline phone since they only took reservations online. It's possible Nat still had it in her phone's contact list and it just wasn't a working number anymore. If you pay close attention, you'll notice anytime someone calls the restaurant about official business, they're calling Nat's cellphone, not a landline.

Aubrey

Nat is the classic people-pleasing, emotionally neglected, parentified daughter. I'm glad that she was able to voice some of her experiences and that her mom gave her the space to do that. I have a feeling, though, that it'll get flung back in her face at some point. I hope not, but I don't know if Donna has effective enough systems in place to handle the criticism without the accompanying spiral. Time will tell, I guess. I thought 3x7 was very authentic as well. Mason Quinn (I think?) made such a great point that no one has even asked Syd why she's hesitant to sign. It's not just that Carmy is blowing her off and making all the decisions without her input, it's that he couldn't even bother to look her in the eye and acknowledge her actual existence. Carmy's legacy is going to be that he identifies talent but can't keep it because of his crap leadership if he's not careful. Having been the person that stayed out of loyalty for 23 years only to be mistreated and misused, and not realizing how deep that trauma can run until you're out of it, I would tell Syd to leave immediately. She's young and wildly talented. She will flourish wherever she goes. Carmy on the other hand....he's got to get his head straight ASAP or he's going to blow it.

I absolutely adore your discussion at the end of episode 8. That episode is my favorite one in the entire show (so far) and I'm so excited for you all to finish this season and jump into season 4!! And season 5 is expected to drop in the Summer of 2026 so you're almost fully caught up ;)

DTGstl314

If S5 follows the same pattern as the first four seasons, it will likely be released on either June 25th or 26th - the first four seasons all released on either the fourth Wednesday (Seasons 3-4) or fourth Thursday (Seasons 1-2) in June. All (most likely ten) episodes will be released at once. A lot of shows on Hulu come out weekly, but The Bear has always been a full drop of the entire season all at once, Netflix-style (usually).

Just wanted to let Diamond Dave know that this was tagged under Demon Slayer. Not sure if it's editable, but I just wanted to point it out in case it's an easy fix. It's no big deal if it's not. Also love the reaction guys!

Nat, played by the brilliant Abbey Elliott is so great in this role. Way more serious than a lot of her other stuff. She was brilliant on SNL for those seasons she was a cast member. She is amazing at impressions and just so funny. But then again her dad is Chris Elliott so makes sense, but when I saw the Bear for the first time and saw just how serious of a role Nat was, it threw me a bit, but she's so great. This was a great episode between mainly just her and Jamie just taking us to acting class.
