Neftaly Duran

Hell yeah!! Lets goo!! One day moreeee

Sanji Sama

Wooo! Been waiting on this reaction, I'm already feeling Less Miserable.

Jijireacts!

so happy you reacted to this amazing movie musical!! hoping for a sound of music reaction soon!!

Dani M

i was so obsessed with this film when i was 14 lol

Jeff K.

Do you hear the people sing… (also if you guys didn’t know, Dustin from Stranger Things played the role of Gavroche on Broadway; that’s where the ST crew found him, essentially.)

Kel

Grateful for the early post, cannot wait to watch!!

Crystal

All I hear is the guy from tik tok singing loaf of bread lololol

Kel

Same! I would watch this or the 25th anniversary edition every morning getting ready for my freshman year of high school, mainly to hear Samantha Barks. She played Eponine in both!

Ana

Ahhh let’s go

Ginger

Yay!!!! So excited to watch your reactions to this!

Maisie

Anne Hathaway ripped my heart out and stomped on it. Well-deserved Oscar.

Jeff K.

I'm not much of a musicals guy, but my wife and I went to see a production of this in Dallas a few years back for her birthday that was a spin on it that placed it in a dystopian future. It was absolutely remarkable. Also: once you know that Jean Valjean’s prison number is 24601, keep an eye on pop culture for that to pop up. It's an Easter Egg in a lot of stuff (it's Sideshow Bob's prison number in The Simpsons, as one example).

MiMiKhali

STOP he kinda ruined this movie for me

Angel

I saw the thumbnail and thought you reacted to Master and Commander. Nice nonetheless.

Javier Padilla

little fun fact i'm sure you guys will enjoy. The set of the barricade fight is the same as Diagon Alley

Jeff K.

Answer joking about a post credits scene has me thinking: "Jean Valjean will return in Avengers: Doomsday"

Angela 🌺

Fun Fact: They wanted the most authentic performances, so most of the songs were recorded while filming. That's kinda rare, and very hard to do.

hails

It’s my birthday week and work has been so bad i’ve cried every day. THIS is the best birthday present i could ask for. THANKS GUYS

NS

I had to control my giggling while watching the film 🤣

Javier Padilla

i don't wanna be that guy. But the story doesn't take place during the French Revolution hahaha right from the start it says that it starts 26 years after the french revolution. Right after the napoleonic era. Ending in the June rebellion in 1832. France as you can see in the movie was in absolute crisis after the napoleonic empire fell. It's easy to confuse beacuse in school they usually teach us that the french monarchy was abolished during the french revlution. (as the movie shows) yet it was restored mostly by Napoleon crowning himself king. The motives for the June Revolution and society state where almost the same as in the French Revolution but they didn't fight to abolish monarchy they wanted to change the current king. (More simillar to a Coup) this led way to the Febuary revolution of 1848 which resulted in changing goverment into a democracy. (It's really confusing. I know) Victor Hugo wrote Les Mis as a comentary of all the turmoil of France during those times. And it's a BIG book and a go to reference for looking into that period of time.

Jaylennn

"AhAhAhAhAhAhAhAh" - Hugh Jackman (Probably)

patrick

So glad you guys finally reacted to this film! It was one of the top ones I wanted you to react when you started watching Musicals lol I love the film but I wouldn't give it a 5/5 either, probably a 4/5. But thats mostly because of the story, or the length of it. The songs are great (especially I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own) but it IS really long and the story is quite heavy. Thats why I never checked out the musical lol A few little fun facts tho: - Anne Hathaway actually won an Oscar for Supporting Role for this movie. (absolutely deserved, her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream always brings tears to my eyes, its such powerful acting) - The Priest, if I remember correctly, was the original Jean Valjean on Broadway. - Same as the actress of Eponine, she played her on Broadway as well. - As someone already mentioned, they sang all (or most) songs live on set. - The boy that plays Gavroche is the same actor that plays Jack in Into the Woods

Eni

I wish😩

Amanda

Thank you for your reaction! This may be the first time I have ever heard someone say that Les Miserables "didn't have any memorable songs" (The musical blasphemy! haha :P) If Madonna is the Queen of pop then Les Mis is the queen of musical theatre. You just need to listen to the soundtrack a few more times and before you know it, you will be cooking while singing Les Mis songs at the top of your lungs xD. The movie does focus more on the acting and the raw emotion of the scene rather than beautiful singing, so if you have the chance to see it in theatres, it is a very different experience. Though, it is the epitome of the musical genre, so I respect that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. If you are interested there are also a lot of memorable versions of the songs on youtube:) E.g. Do you hear the people sing sung by 17 Jean Valjeans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpDbvlAI_A0

Caroline

Finally, you watched it. I can kind of understand that it's a little difficult to get into the plot and the music when you see and hear it for the first time. It's a different experience for people who have seen the show live or heard other recordings before. All of these songs are actually cult classics for anyone involved in theater, musicals, or singing in general. These songs are part of the standard repertoire of most singers worldwide and have always been a popular choice for auditions and singing competitions. Every theatre and musical kid knows these songs by heart, and it just hits different when watching the movie. I dont think the movie is bad, but of course watching the play live on broadway or West End is highly recommend and a completely different experience.

Sam

No real bangers??? 😂😂 About Les Mis- one of the most renowned and respected musicals of all time. The whole thing is a banger!!

Caroline

🤣 i must agree that hit me kinda hard. I can live with everything they said, but that was a brutal statement.

Animalsareangels 94

Just for your information. The songs were sung live while filming. No studio recordings were used. If you are ever interested in seeing a musical performance of this, you can either watch the 10th oder 25th anniversary versions. The 25th is definitely on demand and DVD. It's my favorite version, but most probably like the 10thversion more because of colm Wilkinson, one of the most beloved musical actors and he performed Jean Valjean. Just a side note he played the priest in the movie that saved Valjean at the beginning. As a cameo. In the 25th there are a lot of talented singers, also eponine is played by the same actress as in the movie. Yeah, just some infos😁

Sam

Yeah I didn’t want to leave a comment but then I couldn’t not 😂 don’t get me wrong , I love Greatest Showman and Mamma Mia is ok but , as good as they are they are basically movies with pop songs dotted throughout. Les Mis is in another class all together.

Rawaby 1204

This time I disagree with yall on the songs , I watched this when i was 13 and rewatched it +25 and i was still remembering the songs and it felt even more good ! it is a long movie but I don’t think there was an unnecessary part , idk maybe it is because the songs are dark and sad (which is my style) you didn’t feel like it’s a banger , anyway glad you watched it

Animalsareangels 94

And because you said it against at the end, I listen to these songs regularly. You have to listen to some of the songs in the musical, because as I said they sung them live in the movie and like the answer said Kind of conversationally. So listen to them sung live by some musical actors. Just my two cents😅

Emily G

I’ve worked on two productions of Les Mis, seen it live 6 times, seen the movie dozens of times, and I still cry almost every time I watch it! I the music and story are so powerful and poignant. I’m so glad I get to watch it will you guys today! ❤️ I hope you guys will react to Moulin Rouge and Phantom of the Opera soon!

Maisie

Honestly I think that was a casualty of seeing the movie versus the Broadway show. I got full-body chills every time I watched it on Broadway.

Maisie

Happy Birthday and I hope it gets so much better!

Chavelle

I don't know how many times ive cried watching this lol. But I loved the reactions. The fight, power and protests always move me and holds great emotions + lessons that translate so well.

Hilde

Oak actually brings this up in the discussion 😊

Jessie

Loved watching Oak realize that Anne was singing 'I Dreamed a Dream'. Such a powerful part. I think for those who aren't big fans of musicals or Broadway in general, the music in this one can be difficult to get into, especially if their intro to this genre was Hamilton XD I'm in the same boat and could never quite get into this one. Loved the Susan Boyle shoutout!

Jeff K.

Yeah, I randomly find myself singing "Do You Hear the People Sing" and "One Day More" at the most random times. For me, those are super memorable and absolute bangers.

Jeff K.

"every time" Ok then Masie, humblebrag! Hahaha

Flora

For me, the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert was the best of the best. This movie doesn't even come close although Anne's performance was well done. The movie doesn't let you feel the music and the power behind each and every song the way the concert did. If at least Oak is interested, I hope he listens to the audio for that one even if he doesn't watch it! Either way, thank you for always trying all sorts of genres. 🥰

AttractivePigeon

I'm not a crier... Like at all. I have seen this movie many times... I cried like a baby at "do you hear the people sing" at the end.

Alyssa Dyson

I tried watching this once and couldnt get past the first 20 mins..but ive come to appreciate musicals more and more so lets give it another shot.

Lauren

It’s actually pronounced “Lay mis-er-ob” (rhymes with sob). The -les is silent. Also, the actor who plays the main revolutionary is a very talented Broadway singer. He has the voice that can make any woman get pregnant lol. 😂 Look him up on YouTube.

hails

thank you kind stranger :)

BecauseBeca

I saw this movie when I was 16 yet somehow everyday I sing to my dog “I loved him but everyday I’m learnnninnng alll my liffeeee I’ve only been pretending”. To the point where I don’t even want it in my head but it has been in my head for 14 years.

Karissa M

Totally understand! I’m not the biggest musical person either but this is one I do like! Also highly recommend the 2018 miniseries if you want a non-musical version.

LavendersBlues

Honestly everyone new to Les Mis should watch the 10th or 25th anniversary edition first. My preference is 25th because they did a lot of stage stuff to make it feel like watching the live play while still being a concert. PLUS -- same Eponine as the 2012 and she wasn't hobbled to their "realistic" goals or whatever. When she belts out "On My Own" I always get chills.

Ana

The worst part of this movie was Russel Crowe. Idk what possessed them to cast him. He can not sing and would throw the flow of music off

Ana

Definitely recommend the 25th anniversary with all the jean valjeans singing is peak

LavendersBlues

My favorite random fact is that the Army Officer who tells the barricade to surrender is Hadley Fraser who was the drunk revolutionary Grantaire in the 25th Anniversary (and he's Raoul in the 25th anniversary Phantom)....so he's a revolutionary in a stage production and then got cast as a soldier killing the students in the film version. Fun times!

Tanner Bost

if you do another musical yall should watch Oliver. idk if you seen it but its really really good story telling and music

xflipjamsx

Definitely react to RENT and Tick Tick Boom next :)

Ginger

I saw this movie in the theater when my dad was in the hospital fighting for his life just a few months after my mom passed away. I cried in the scene when Cosette told her dad it was too soon to say goodbye. I still cry watching that scene and my dad has been gone 9 years. The boy who played Gavroche played Jack in Into the Woods. The musical also never reveals that Gavroche was the younger brother of Eponine. The musical is based off the classic novel. The actor who played the priest that saves ValJean was the original Jean ValJean on Broadway. So handing Hugh Jackman the candlesticks was like passing the torch. Also it was Eponine and not the priest who greeted ValJean after he died in the stage musical, but I like this better as ValJean never had any interactions with Eponine. Also, the actress who played Eponine got cast to play the same role in London’s west end before this movie was made. This is my favorite musical because of the overarching story of how showing grace and mercy to one person changed his life who paid it forward and positively impacted the lives of others. Unfortunately Javert could not understand or accept the concept of grace and mercy and that people have the potential to change their life for the better. I’m surprised that you guys didn’t comment on this theme. This movie is a 5 for me.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

"Also it was Eponine and not the priest who greeted ValJean after he died in the stage musical" Nope - in the stage musical, it's Fantine who sings to him first, then Eponine comes in duetting with her, and then Gavroche and Les Amis join afterwards -- all of the dead.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

They usually do one musical a month minimum. If you want Oliver you should head over to the website and submit it as a suggestion - it isn't even on there to be upvoted.

nj

yes. there are elements of this version that are good, but it's nowhere near as good as a live show, the original or broadway cast recordings, or the 10th anniversary concert. would also highly recommend checking out the 10th anniversary concert.

Ginger

I was saying the priest replaced Eponine at the end, not that he replaced Fantine. The priest was standing across the yard to greet him instead of Eponine.

Terri Cooper

I just saw Les Mis in the theater for the 2nd time and it holds up. I was just as moved as the first time I saw it. My daughter has Autism and when we watched the movie she cried a lot which isn't usual for her. I agree ...listen to the Broadway Cast with Colm Wilkerson or the anniversary one with Gary Morris...both wonderful singers.

Justin Russell

I saw this for the first time live when I was 6 years old and I’ve seen it live 7 more times since! This to me is one of my all time favorite musicals, my mom owned the cassette which we would listen to almost every car ride if we didn’t have the phantom in! This movie on stage is I will admit a lot more impressive. The barricade scenes are amazingly done and Javert when he offs himself is done insanely well. Now as much as I always agree with you guys, the one thing I have to say is this musical has actually a lot of bangers!! Do you hear the people sing is an absolute anthem to belt, one day more is so much fun to just sing along with to each part, the confrontation song is soooo great to duet with people!! Also one thing I remember learning is the role of Jean Valjean is the hardest vocal role to do in any musical, it’s the harshest and most strenuous vocal role to do. I knew this wasn’t gonna beat dreamgirls and some others, but I’m really glad you guys still enjoyed this one!!

Justin Russell

Also I forgot to add, the musical it definitely does seem like a movie that really jumps all over the place. The musicals based off French Author and Poet Victor Hugo’s 1862 Novel of the same title. The movie and stage musicals all leave out so much because it’s based off this book which is 1428 pages long so they do the best with cramming almost 1500 pages into a 2.5hr musical

Skylar Ives

You have to react to RENT my god, if you want emotion and absolutely banger music RENT is where you need to go!

Logical Dreamer

I remember when this movie came out and was so in awe, but I think the 25th Anniversary is my favorite. It's more of a concert than a full-out production, but the cast is superb. In fact, Samantha Barks played Eponine in both versions.

Lily

Answer what do u mean no memorable songs when oak talked 20 min about dreamed a dream🤣 also the one day more song is constantly being used for flash mobs and parodies !

Hilde

I love Hadley. If you haven’t seen it, look up his duet with Ramin Karimloo singing Empty chairs where Hadley forget the lyrics haha. It’s both hilarious and (eventually) amazingly beautiful!

LavendersBlues

Hilde -- I adore Hadley too!!! I got really into The Pirate Queen because of him 😂😂😂 And I have NOT SEEN THAT, I am going to go look it up immediately ( •̀ ^ •́ )✧

Leigh Marx

Me over here patiently waiting for Rent and Newsies (both the stage show and then the original and in that order) LOL

Krios

The tour of Les Mis was just in Milwaukee, but will be in Chicago in a few months! Highly, highly rec seeing the tour - it's honestly so much better than the movie. The current cast is great and the show live just works better than whatever Tom Hooper was trying to do here. :/

Jane Avery

I've never made it through this movie but maybe I can with you guys 🤞

Kiss the Librarian

Susan Boyle's performance always gives me chills and makes me tear up. Anne Hathaway's scene is a gut punch. This movie feels very relevant to the class injustices of today.

Matthew Glover

I fell asleep halfway through watching along with them lol had to finish it the next day.

Bluhawke

To be fair to the guys, the music & singing in this movie is painfully anemic compared to the stage version. I can’t fault them for feeling like there were “no bangers,” because that’s how I feel about this production. I’ve seen this show live at least half-dozen times, and always bawl my way through it, but the movie barely manages to move me. I am very grateful though for it introducing people who may normally been unaware of its presence to this masterful musical. And I certainly don’t begrudge anyone who won awards for this movie. It’s just my personal opinion that they prioritized acting (and house-hold names) over singing for this musical. Colm Wilkinson’s the Monseigneur is a presence that will always draw a nostalgic tear from my eye; he and Alfie Boe share custody of the role of Val Jean.

Grace Arnold

As someone who grew up around and a part of choirs and musicals it blows my mind to hear you say you didn’t think there were any stand out songs. Many of the songs in this musical are and were, for lack of a better word, revolutionary in musical theater. They’re difficult songs not only for the singers but also the orchestra. It is still incredibly common to see these songs used as audition material. On My Own, Do You Hear the People Sing, Who Am I, A Heart Full of Love, Look Down, I Dreamed A Dream, and One Day More are all very impactful and moving songs many of which are technically difficult for the singer. I can’t see any version of this show without tearing up at some point. Some interesting facts This movie version was filmed with live singing. None of the singing was done in the studio but instead all of it was live in front of the camera Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway actually lost the weight to look the way they looked at the beginning of the film. Anne Hathaway’s hair was actually cut for the scene in Lovely Ladies It took 8 hours to film I Dreamed a Dream because Hathaway wanted to put as much emotion into it as possible. Colm Wilkinson originated the role of Jean Valjean on broadway and in the movie he played the bishop. In the broadway version, Fantine and Eponine greet Valjean to heaven. This was changed so Wilkinson could be part of the scene. Eponine and Gavroche are siblings. In Master of the House, Madam Thenardier replaces a man’s luggage with a baby in a basket, which is Gavroche.

Laura

I mean to be fair this movie didnt really do the songs any justice, the stage version is far superior. Anne hathaway did do a splendid job though.

Katie

This was my first time watching this too. Don’t know why it took me so long. Honestly the only parts of this I knew was of course I dreamed a dream and the parts with Gavroche that Nick Jonas played in the stage play as a kid lol

soybeanz11

I've only watched the 10th anniversary version before, and this was my first time ever watching the movie. I was so shocked to see the legendary actor for val jean play the priest !! Hope they see the live singing version or the whole musical one day!
