This movie is so nostalgic for me. I remember watching it over and over as a kid. I'm pretty sure Disney Channel released a danced tutorial video for the last song (We're All In This Together), and my sister and I had so much fun trying to learn the dance moves.

So my brother is actually in this movie, he is the guy that is singing right before Troy and Gabriella in the opening scene, and is the same guy that pushes Troy onto stage to sing😂😂 we always give my brother a fun time saying he is a movie star for being in that movie!

I haven’t started the reaction yet, so I honestly don’t know what to expect 😅 I’ve actually never seen High School Musical 1 or 2. I was already in college when they came out, so I wasn’t really the target audience 😂 When the third movie came out in theaters, I went with a friend just to see what all the hype was about — we were honestly kind of planning to make fun of the madness because it was SUCH a craze 😂 But we walked out almost singing the songs. I actually thought the third one was really fun! Seeing it in theaters was such an experience… the only downside was that the place basically turned into a full-on screaming concert. Teenage girls were losing it pretty much the entire movie — especially every time Zac Efron showed up on screen 😂😂 So now I’m really curious to see what 1 and 2 are like since I’ve never watched them!

When I was in university I went to the premiere of the 3rd movie in Paris... yeah I was a bit too old for it, didn't care lol, most people around me were not much younger actually. Saw everyone on the red carpet, got an autograph from the director... Missed the last train... Had to ask the parents of the siblings I was tutoring if I could crash at their place lol (they were super nice, even made me a late dinner)... NOSTALGIA!!! 🥺😁

Young me was totaly thinking is was going to be like High school musical. Also Highschools are very diffrent in Europe compared to America. My sister and younger cousin were the targeted age for these movies so I saw them A LOT growing up. Rewatching it over a decade later the cringe factor hit hard but not in a way that makes it unenjoyable. I’d be lying though if I said I never listened to these soundtracks throughout the years I’d be lying. Growing up though this movie weirdly hit closer to home going to a very country heavy school where you were picked on being into theater and movies so I had to pretend to be into sports, fishing, stuff like that but you couldn’t like movies and stuff as well because it wasn’t “the image”.

After watching this movie for the first time in years along with you guys i forgot how much fun it was. Another good Disney watch from my childhood i can recommend is The Thirteenth Year. This unlocked so many memories of Disney movies i watched when i was younger and The Thirteenth Year is right up there with HMS and The Luck of the Irish (also another Disney rec).

HSM 3 is personally my favorite, but HSM 2 has my favorite songs :)

I was one of those kids who watched Disney Channel religiously and anticipated every original movie release. I wasn't excited about this one lol And after it came out, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't something I felt crazy about. I truly had no idea just how huge it was gonna become. I feel like I usually have good judgement of the success of something, but I was so wrong about this one. I was wrong about Frozen too. Did not expect it to become a global phenomenon.

I saw a couple of other reactors say the same thing, so ok the classroom they’re in at the beginning is homeroom. It’s normally only 5-10 minutes every morning (in my school’s case only once a week) and your homeroom teacher goes over any events that are happening. We also got our report cards in homeroom. So yeah that’s why they sit down for 5 minutes and then leave class😂 it’s before first period

My love for this movie is purely just nostalgia. It's probably the last made-for-tv Disney movie I watched before I aged out of Disney TV. That doesn't make it a great movie though.

I was too old to be part of the target audience when this came out, but my younger siblings were obsessed with it, so it was on in the house a LOT. I was never a huge fan, but rewatching it now, it's a lot of fun in that campy, low-budget Disney Channel way. And the cast brought great energy, especially Zac and Vanessa. I will say though that the sequels are in a whole different league in terms of the choreography and music; they really stepped things up after the success of the first one. There are some legit bangers in HSM 2 and 3. Looking forward to them, and really enjoyed this reaction!

I was 7 when hsm came out and I was obsesssssed lol. My 9th birthday party was hsm themed and it was the last birthday party I had before my mom passed that year so as cringes as this is it’s a huge part of my childhood. I actually still have the birthday candle which is a star with a mega horn and a basketball and the hsm birthday pin that lights up and plays music .

I also remember when it played on Disney channel during the commercial breaks the cast would show us how to dance to the songs in hsm2. Such a fun memory of dancing to these songs in my living room at like 9:00pm in front of the tv

I love that you guys are doing these! They are so fun! And yes, the 3rd was a theatrical release and it’s amazing the difference in how cinematic it is so you have that to look forward to! 😂. As for me, I was one of those who was obsessed with this in Elementary School as a boy who didn’t like sports and was an artist it really meant a lot to me! I even went to see High School Musical in concert with the cast and even High School Musical ON ICE… yes that was a thing 😂😂

what's sad is that while the kids' exaggerated "don't try anything new" attitude seems absurd and/or outdated.... it honestly is still reality. we've progressed a lot as a society, but not so far that kids aren't self-conscious and pressured into staying within their cliques. "athletes don't hang with nerds", "theater kids are lame" so on so forth... "Stick to the Status Quo" seems silly to flat out say, but tragically it is what most kids do heck, it's what most adults do

So to Dave's question if the moms would have liked to see Zac. No, because that role was his breakout role. I don't know if he had been in stuff before but he wasn't known. At all. So the girls watching the movie, at the time I was 12, would swoon. Nit the moms He was too young And to oak I think this movie was definitely also targeting teenagers of the ages of 16 ti 17 or even higher I mean it's called high school musical because they are in high-school That's their target audience. Something else, and here I can only speak for germany. The first two movies didn't come out in cinema only on the Disney Channel. The third made it to cinema.

Lemonade Mouth is my favorite Disney Channel Original movie. The music in it is pretty good, and the story is solid. As far as High School Musical goes, I think the third one is the strongest, although the second one is a lot more enjoyable than the first because of the songs.

I've been waiting for this day! I'm so hype for this reaction and for you guys to continue the trilogy! This is the best way to end February! I remember when this came out, I was 8 years old and it was Friday night and my sister and I were so excited to watch, we had my dad record it onto a DVD. We practically watched it all weekend and then on Monday I remember conferring with my friends about their thoughts. I remember after the movie premiered on disney channel my parents bought me tween magazines with Zac Efron on the cover and my mom let me get the highschool musical valentines to give to my class which I think most of the girls in my grade at the time also got.

Ah yes, my childhood. I even used to own a HSM beach towel lol. You will very clearly see when you get to the second one, a significant budget increase because the first one did so unexpectedly well. The songs, attire, everything will be upgraded in the second one. To answer your question, Zac did not sing in the first movie, however, he did sing the entirety of the second and third movies!

That sure was a movie that I just watched! 🤣 In all seriousness, I can see how if you were the right age, this movie would absolutely be an obsession. I get why a certain subgeneration is Ride or Die for HSM franchise. I was just far far too old for it when it came out. There are movies I watched when I was young that I'm absolutely crazy for even though I know that they're not very good. Something magical happens when you encounter movies, music, etc. during those formative years that hardwires them into your emotions.

This is a Disney Channel Original Movie, most of their original movies (the ones that premiered exclusively on the Disney channel and not in a theater) are rated G. Everything from Brink, Johnny Tsunami, Motocrossed, Halloween Town, Luck Of The Irish, Smart House, among many other movies are pretty light in tone. It's the movies that are released in theaters where Disney likes to add something traumatic to the story, 9 times out of 10, the death of a parent/parents. And funny enough I was 17 when this premiered on the Disney Channel and even though I've only seen this a couple of times I remember liking it, mainly it was me just falling for Vanessa more than anything lol. Anyways, loved your guys' reaction, had a blast rewatching this. Haven't seen the sequels but if you guys react to them I'll gladly watch along. Had to go to the website and recommend my 2 favorite dcom (Brink and Johnny Tsunami) need more reactions to Disney channel original movies.

I didn’t remember knowing them that well, but I actually know almost all of them — and I really love most of them 😁 The third movie, since it was released in theaters, truly has much better production. The choreography and the songs are so much better. At least in my opinion, they’re more memorable, catchier, and the choreography — and especially the overall production — is incredible. And you can really see the difference. It was actually my first time watching the first movie, and there’s a big difference in how they were filmed. You can tell it was made for television. I did like the final song and maybe one or two others, but not nearly as much as the ones I love from the last movie ☺️☺️

I would disagree lol, I think their target audience was more 7-14 years old (but of course, teens and even adults are welcome to and often enjoy too). Lots of series are set in high school that are meant for younger kids. The merch that released with this movie was little toys like barbies and kids purses and kids clothes etc

This is one of those films I loved to death when it came out and throughout the series. As I got older I can't help but notice how cringy it is, but I can't help but laugh with it. But there are 3 films, a spin off called Sharpays Fabulous Adventure (honestly a really good character arc for Sharpay!) then 4 seasons of a spinoff show called High School Musical The Musical The Series. Which was really good! I actually prefer the show to the films. Also, it was not Zac singing in this film. The music was not written for his range, so Drew Seeley sings in this. The next 2 films will be Zac singing.

High School Musical came out a bit after I moved past watching Disney Channel stuff, but I watch anything that's a musical, even if it turns out to be terrible, the 7th Heaven musical episode, I wish I could get my time back from watching that for many reasons, anyway I didn't hear about this right away, but when it was airing again I noticed and thought, how did I miss a musical and watched it, I thought it was good, but it's not my favorite Disney original, that belongs to Lemonade Mouth. But like I was saying, I did enjoy it and I think the sequels continue to get better and I actually liked High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

I hadn't seen it in like 15 years and contrary to what many say IMO it didn't have a lot of cringe. I think people conflate cringe and camp. Camp is exaggerated on purpose which is definitely the case here, as the movie is comedic and unserious for the most part. (To compare, I'd call Twilight cringe because it takes itself seriously 99% of the time lol) I'd actually rate it 3.5 too!

I was in high school when this came out, and I absolutely loved it, and so did a ton of people at my school. So I think it can be considered aimed at those going into high school, those in high school, and some younger people. It came out as a Disney Channel movie, so it was primarily shown on TV rather than in theaters. The second one was also released only on Disney Channel. But the third was actually released in theaters.

I was already laughing when I got the notification, same for me as a lot of people in the comments. This is part of my childhood, I had sheets with their faces on them (to this day I have no clue how I was able to sleep in that)... also I remember I never owned the second one on DVD, a friend gave me a copy of the karaoke sing along version so I am still VERY good at singing all these songs even though for most of them I cringe a lot while doing it. It's very fun for longer car rides with my sister tho :D idk it's just nostalgic to look back onto it, I would never watch these movies randomly on my own but like this I had a blast, I couldn't stop laughing because of your expressions!

To answer some of your pondering: Yes, this was released as a Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), and usually the target audience for dc is middle school age, but kids younger and older also enjoy the content. The filming was over 24 days, but most dcoms with singing have a bootcamp before filming starts. That's where most of the actors are learning the songs, dancing, running through some of the more complex scenes, and stunt training(not for HSM but others like Descendants)

This movie came out when I was 7 and it's hard to explain just how iconic it is for my generation, in all its goofiness and all its glory lol. So many DCOMs in this era are baked into my generation's way of communicating, our memes and our references. I can't hear the phrase, "We're all in this together," without immediately humming this song. The second one is my personal favorite but I also LOVED the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series show (again, for all its goofiness and all its glory). I hope you guys watch the series too 'cause it has some banger songs, fun characters, and great acting! It's not perfect but the ending made my heart so happy.
