I'll say it: oh boy. But seriously, I'm split on this one. I got the symbolism Mason Quinn was picking up, and I felt the frustration that Oak described. The film did drag for a while, and it was quite sad with inevitable doom hanging over it. Which is why it needed that sweet dog's face to lift it. I think we can all agree about how cute and well trained that dog is. I am impressed with the quality of the film given the budget, although the mud man was a bit lackluster in a few scenes (like when he disappeared on the stairs with bad CGI). I wonder if the mysterious illness was cystic fibrosis, a lung disease that produces a chronic cough that only worsens and can make people cough up blood. It's hereditary, and most people don't live beyond 40, which might be about the main character's age. But idk, lung cancer can have a family component, and although he's young, that's also possible.
