This might be an unpopular opinion but I think Simon’s response to the abuse he endured is valid. Him making that vow to his father was his way of regaining his power. I don’t agree that it’s a healthy way to cope but so many people are self destructive and broken as a response to childhood trauma. End of the day it doesn’t matter that his father wasn’t around to abuse him on a consistent basis. Children who grow up in the foster care system still develop a sense of abandonment from parents they never knew. I just think people are relatively harsh on Simon simply because they want him to love Daphne (“she’s so good to you, just get over your trauma and love her”). It’s almost like Daphne telling Simon that he’s loved is what he needed (which she does in episode 8), not to be told to get over it and marry her.

Penelope is not too young to be Whistledown. She learns history and gains new information while always being in the background and ignored. She can't help but listen to and see everything going on around her. People don't mind talking around someone they would never suspect is Whistledown. So glad you enjoyed season one — there’s more to come! 🐝 In terms of Lady Whistledown, I have to say you’re overthinking it a bit. There is only one Lady Whistledown, and the title has not been passed on from person to person; nor is it a group of people working together. It’s just one person, as revealed at the end of episode 8. In episode 1, Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers is introduced as a new gossip sheet — made all the more scandalous for naming those involved in (potential) scandals. So this year/season is the first year it’s been in print. There is some foreshadowing about Lady Whistledown’s identity in episode 4, during the Trowbridge Ball — Penelope and Colin are talking, and when Penelope makes an observant remark about the new Lord Trowbridge’s potential parentage, Colin remarks, “What a barb!” This, to me, shows Penelope to be very astute and not backwards about sharing her true thoughts — where it is safe to do so. Safe meaning Colin, or via her pseudonym. After all, Penelope is the quintessential wallflower — always overlooked, never considered as “desirable” or even as a threat. In episode 8, Lady Whistledown reflects on the swift betrothal of Miss Leopold from 1804 — this isn’t indicative of Lady Whistledown writing back then, just that she is reporting on the fact: information that she would have had access to via books/pamphlets (and we all know how she loves to read). It’s not dissimilar to any of us in the present day writing about the life of Queen Charlotte, for example; we didn’t need to be there, just aware of other literature about that time. As for printers, there are quite a few in London (to put it mildly). There was a mass media explosion of printers, new technology driving faster presses, etc, in the 1800s; indeed, part of the problem of narrowing down Lady Whistledown’s identity was the sheer number of printers to investigate. She’ll have no problems finding another… 😉 Annnd, also, Lady Whistledown is voiced by Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, The Princess Diaries, etc). 😍 I want to say so much more but I don’t want to spoil anything. I can’t wait for your continued reactions to this series and whose stories happen next! Thank you for another fantastic reaction — you’re really making my Tuesdays so much better. 🧡

Marina didn’t love Colin, that was problem from his perspective. She pretended to be in love so that she would marry him. If she actually had loved him and told him that she was just afraid to tell him I don’t think Colin would be as upset as he was.

I agree, he was all-in with defying social convention by the end. I think he did love her, but was not quite mature enough yet. He yo-yo'ed her back and forth at first, but even when he was fully motivated to debut her in society as his partner, it wasn't quite clear what role he wanted her to have in his life. If he meant for her to be his wife, then she'd have to become a viscountess, drop her working class accent, learn etiquette, and probably stop singing at the opera. I'm not sure he thought that through, but she did. She knew how society would treat her, especially as a woman. That scene is a heartbreaking one for them both, and very well acted. After, you can just feel Anthony's seething at the position society has forced him into.

So fun to watch with you guys. Really appreciate Diamond Dave's frustration with Simon going back and forth with Daphne. Her speech at the end was great, but I wish she didn't have to do all the emotional labor in their relationship. She was very inspiring at the end, and he was definitely there. xD As I said in a past comment, I am a fan of this show and I do enjoy this season. I'm just not as impressed with Simon as I hoped to be. He's more of a plot device than a fully realized character. Not the actor's fault at all. Very excited to continue watching with you, the best is yet to come in my opinion. :) Curious: Now that you know Penelope is Lady Whistledown, what do you think about how she handled Marina's secret pregnancy? It's a tough situation for everybody and I don't think there's any clear right or wrong answer.

I think what confused you guys was the mention that the quickest engagement on record was in 1803 ( or something?) when a couple got engaged in 4 minutes. She was just relaying a story that society already knew as an intro to couples leaving town or having unknown marital troubles. She was not narrating in the present in 1803. Mason Quinn kept saying she was narrating in the early 1800's and I'm not quite getting where he came to that conclusion, so I'm thinking that is where the mix up is. But yes, as others have said, they are very clear in the beginning that, while there have been gossip rags, this is the first one that names names. Historically, in real history, gossip sheets would just use a first letter to indicate who the writer was speaking of, such as "Duke H, was seen about town with with Lady B etc etc.

I totally understand Simon’s perspective, without getting into my own past it’s completely understandable. And the thing is he loves her so much but trauma doesn’t care lol. Feelings are so complicated and trauma just further complicates things. You can love someone with all your heart but still struggle a lot due to your past. I wish more people could understand that.

If you rewatch season 1 with the knowledge Pen is Lady Whistledown, you do see some subtle clues with the camera work choices. I think they did a great job foreshadowing that! Can’t wait for next season!

It’s also unfathomable for Daphne to understand because she grew up witnessing a loving household. Apart from her parents, her siblings all care about each other deeply. Simon grew up completely alone. It isn’t until Daphne saw the letters that her stance changed entirely, which makes sense because she didn’t know the full extent of what happened and I don’t blame her. But she’s trying to reverse decades of pain within a few weeks and that won’t come without its challenges.

I don’t know if I agree with you. It’s established early in the show that Lady F is rude and self absorbed. Before Marina walked in the door, she was talking about how she’s probably unattractive and won’t take any attention away from her girls. Who talks that way about a child as an adult? Even when Marina had a chance to find stability, she wasn’t happy for her. Instead she interrupts and says “maybe you can take care of the cousins family as well” as if she didn’t threaten to throw Marina into the slums 3-4 episodes ago. She showed no care for Marina and even emotionally manipulated her so that she could hopefully marry some old, rich man because it would benefit their family. I don’t want to spoil anything but a lot characters had “bad” husbands and still turned out to be decent people. Lady F on the other hand doesn’t get better from here, if anything she continues going downhill.

Marrying a rich old man was so she could easily pass off giving birth six months after marriage without raising suspicion. That did not benefit their family. And any person is going to worry for their own daughters first.

yup! and kate & anthony has been my fav couple ever since i was a teenager reading their book but a part of me cant help but imagine what it would be like if anthony's main love interest was sienna, the socially impossible choice. i think it'd have more weight and angst than Benedict, considering he's the firstborn and the viscount and all.

The women do most of the emotional labor in this series and it's so old hat. Less so in season 2, but I shouldn't say more (spoilers). There's a hilarious regency romance on Amazon, based on a book (Persephone and the Duke, I think?), and it's this same trope of the emotionally stunted man whom the woman must coax and teach how to be human/express himself. His catchphrase is literally, "Dukes don't need people." It's laugh out loud entertainment.

The last episode of season 1 is where they started to lose me. Even though I hate a miscommunication trope, I appreciated the first season for what it was. I truly dislike that they jumped the shark with the big reveal at the end, however. I understand that no movie or series can cover a book beat for beat, but we lose so much of Lady Whistledown's genius and humor by revealing their identity after only 8 episodes. The book series gives you FOUR NOVELS of mystery and anticipation. Here, she feels petty and mean-spirited, and almost every column feels like a take-down piece. I didn't watch beyond season 2 originally, so I'm interested to see if I'll feel more compelled to do so now that I'm over my initial disappointment.

i half rewatched, didnt pay attention visually, but it does make sense timing wise, when she lets marina's secret out at that moment and not prior or later, or her mom complaining that their family donations not being mentioned and gossiping mainly about the seasons diamond, since her family obviously isnt likeable, she didnt care to write about them.
