In 3rd grade my class read this book and then had a pizza party to watch the movie since it had just come out - I remember crying with EVERYONE. But it's SUCH a good story.

I have only read the book, but I worked at the movie theater when this came out and I felt so bad about all the little kids and families who didn't know what was coming. O.O

I haven’t read the book since I was a little kid (third grade I think?) but it definitely had a big impact on me at the time. I think the biggest differences that I remember are that the book is set in the 1970s (which makes a lot more sense for certain things like the dynamic between father and son, the teacher taking a single student on a field trip, and some of the way the bullying plays out), and also that the movie plays into the fantasy aspect a lot more onscreen when it’s more clearly imagined in the book. As far as Leslie’s death though, it essentially plays out the same way and in the same spot in the story, with only about thirty pages or so left. It’s such a rug pull moment for a kid, but I think it was very well executed and led to a lot of great conversations with my parents where we could talk about serious topics in a way I could relate to the story. I think that it’s important to have stories like this, even if it seems like it might be too heavy for a child, because they’re often more resilient and capable of understanding than we expect. Or maybe I was just an overly serious child, lol. I saw the movie a little while afterward and I remember feeling at the time that although there were changes, it really captured the spirit of the story well.
