Love that you guys are soaking this all in. Just to clarify, Jeju female divers (haenyeo) dive without gear. The non-stop diving directly affects their health and each moment can be at the risk of death. Ae-Sun's mother was so harsh to the other divers because she didn't want to share her harvest with an older diver who is sick since she's risking her life for each item and wants to give it all to her own children. She would rather be seen as a horrible person, but have just one more morsel of food or money to feed her kids because her husband is unemployed and the kids are so young. The harsh treatment of Ae-Sun is 100% hoping that she wouldn't want to be with her and would just happily go to the Oh family (Ae-Sun's dead father's family), but Ae-Sun kept on coming back. Technically, because Ae-Sun's surname is Oh and she is registered with that family, she doesn't 'belong' with her mother and stepfather or stepsiblings because they don't share a surname. Hope that sheds some light.

cuesegue .

I absolutely love this show and I am so excited for all of you to watch it!! I'm also so glad you picked up on so many of the subtle instances of humor like Gwan-sik gulping and Ae-sun's expressions, so many people just overlook these things and while it isn't a part of the main storyline, it definitely adds to it as well as adding levity! I look forward to watching you all react to the next episodes!!

1960 Korea is 7 years after the divide of north and south. The story is set on Jeju Island which is south of mainland South Korea and the show depicts the people there as more superstitious. Back then SK was an extremely poor country, so this is before the rapid economic development and wealth SK is known for now.

I’ve seen this show completely through only a small handful of times and rewatching this first episode with y’all just reminded me why. It makes me cry EVERY. DAMN. TIME. You guys, you’re gonna love this show and have a very deep appreciation for it as you slowly progress with the story. It’s sooooo so beautiful but also sooo so heartbreaking. It’s a show for every generation, it’s absolute gold✨ thanks for giving it a go guys, you have my whole heart🧡

A few things that might help you understand the context a little better — especially since you asked about the historical/cultural background. I’m definitely not an expert, so please correct me if I get anything wrong! 😊 🇰🇷 The Korean age system Korea used a traditional age system for a long time, where you were considered one year old at birth and everyone’s age increased together on New Year’s Day. So depending on the exact year/date. If you are born in December you turn 2 on New Years. Aesun would probably be a 17 year old girl, when running away. 🧿 Gwan-sik’s grandma (Yong-rim) One thing I really wanted to mention because, without the cultural context, Yong-rim can just look like a cruel old lady who is unnecessarily mean to Ae-sun. Yong-rim is actually a village shaman who performs traditional rites to bless and protect the village. In Korean shamanistic beliefs, a spirit lingering around someone can be seen as a bad omen, even when the deceased person has good intentions. So Yong-rim's behavior toward Ae-sun is also connected to her belief that she needs to protect her grandson from this. 🇰🇷 A little historical context Since you were asking about the historical setting: In 1960s South Korea was still a very poor and heavily authoritarian country at that time. After Japanese colonial rule ended in 1945, Korea was divided, and the Korean War followed from 1950–1953. The war ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving Korea divided into North and South. South Korea then remained under authoritarian governments for decades, with democratization coming much later. So the Korea we're seeing here is very different from the South Korea we know today. People were dealing with poverty, limited opportunities, corruption and a very uncertain political environment. And because this was also the middle of the Cold War, people could be extremely wary of anything connected to spies or North Korea. Jeju was also relatively isolated, with very strong community traditions and beliefs. And one last thing: DON'T immediately skip the credits! 😂 Keep an eye out for the little epilogues after some episodes. When you see “When Life Gives You Tangerines” at the end, there may still be an epilogue coming!

ias

Super happy for this reaction! I didn't watch this when it first came out, so I was waiting you guys to finally watch this. Also, a little detail: Jeju (the island where they lived) is famous for its tangerines!

karla

I’m soooo happy to see this upload! Have been waiting for so long🥰

Audrey

Greatest show of all time

karla

Yess and indeed the mother is the 007 from the glory! Good eyes DD👍

Josie

Yay so excited for you guys reaction and get ready for an emotional ride!!! Also I'm sure this will be mentioned by others but this drama is based on a real story and that family's journey which makes it all the more emotional. So please, sit back and enjoy this beautiful journey!

Kimberley

Here we go this is one of my favorite K-dramas. the writing the acting is amazing. I think you all are really gonna like this one.

yenmy

So happy to see DD joining in! I’m really looking forward to all of your reactions as you make your way through the rest of the series. I cry every single time I rewatch it 🥹 Even seeing random clips on Instagram, Youtube, or Tiktok is enough to make me tear up. I honestly didn’t think anything would ever rival My Mister for me, but When Life Gives You Tangerines definitely did 🍊💛

Seelia

Oh thank goodness this is only once a week! I've cried so much watching and rewatching with everyone! 😂🤣

Seelia

He's the John Wick of Korea but more handsome 😂😍😅

Selina Rojo

Yess he’s so handsome I love him 😍 😂

Aline Kodsi

so excited, I love this show!

Seelia

I just want to explain a bit about why she wasn't living with her mom in the first place. In Korean tradition, if a husband dies and they had kids, the kids would stay with his family. The wife can go marry a new husband but she will usually leave her children to her late husband's family to raise. The new family see them as belonging to the old family and only want to raise their own kids. I'm sure most people don't follow this tradition anymore but this was the 60s so... Her mom was also just giving her tough love, pushing her away in the beginning, but I'm glad she went and took her back.

Jesse B

Yes DD that is 007 & there’s a lot of familiar faces in this Kdrama😂😂

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

That was 007 (Ms. Kang). Diamond Dave, you had it right. I noticed other familiar faces from the glory as well

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

The first episode didn't have me hooked all the way, but the second one definitely did. Ae-Sun and Qwan-Sik are so cute and silly together. I love it, and I just love their connection as well. ❤ 🤣

Helen

I only watched until episode 6 and then never found the time to pick it up again so it'll be fun to watch it together

Childless Bambino

Just about to start this now! Diamond Dave is here too! Excellent ! And a double drop!!

Angel

The main actress in this show is not only a good actress but also a talented famous singer.

Marie RammGirl

Yay for the 'Nectarines' reference teehee 🤭 but think peaches are more delicious tasting Quinn ;) Was cool seeing Yeom Hye-Ran (Ms Kang 007) again, she was a baddass on this show too! who've thought her Daughter's poem would have such an impactful effect on her. Loved your reactions to the little scoot over he does with his bed & the 'Hostess' "Get Busy" line & your reactions to it gave me a cheeky giggle 😈 Never thought I'd see an Avatar "MY CAGGES!" moment in this show hehe. This is a 1st time watch for me, so let's see what all the fuss & hype is about from people, by taking this roller coaster ride of emotions with you guys. ❤️💙

karla

As for the mom’s attitude toward Aesun in the beginning, I think she’s intentionally pushing her daughter away so she can finish her studies. She does, of course, care about her (she was upset that Aesun didn’t get the croaker), but she doesn’t show it because she’s trying to get rid of that emotional attachment.

Halle

Hoping they will react to The Manipulated one day, it is such an underrated drama, I think they would really enjoy it.

illy

From the end of 2002 to the beginning of 2005, I served in the military on Jeju Island. Since my main duty was coastal surveillance, I often saw haenyeo (female divers), and they certainly have strong personalities and a tough way of speaking, but they also have deep compassion. Today, we understand why decompression sickness occurs and how to avoid it, but in the 1960s, the era in the early part of the drama, decompression sickness was a mysterious disease. The combination of shamanistic beliefs and the sentiments of that time made it regarded as a kind of curse. In Korea, Jeju Island was called Samdado, meaning it had a lot of wind, stones, and women. The maternal-centered social sentiment was very strong back then, though it is almost gone now. Although it is not addressed in this drama, the Jeju 4.3 Incident—a tragic event in modern Korean history, known in English as the Jeju uprising—was also a reason that strengthened the characteristics of the maternal-centered society. I am very pleased that you have chosen this drama. It will be a choice you won’t regret. I hope this journey of warm and profound stories will give you a chance to reflect once more on your relationships with your parents, siblings, and children.

Angel

Can’t wait for the next episode.Love your reactions 🫶

Rawaby 1204

I am glad you are enjoying the show , i was worried that you may have think it’s too heavy like some of the reactors , also glad that DD recognized 007 , the show contains come cultural things (like Haenyeo which means Sea women/female free divers) that may confuse you so don’t worry about it you can be confused just ask ! I don’t know if someone already mentioned this but they purposely casted an older actress for 29 years old to show how much struggle she had in her life (diving 20meters without oxygen tank regularly will do that to you) , about the music, mason quinn is right , this drama will use music as well but not as much as CLOY cause that one was older , they changed their way in kdramas with music , before you can get a whole album and scenes where they play half the song , but not anymore sadly

mdl

I was watching the second episode and then my wife walked in and told me not to watch the show because of [spoiler] as she started tearing up about it. Luckily I don’t care about spoilers 😅 Love the dynamic between the two leads so far. Can’t wait to have my heart break and put back together from this show.

Mari

I guess no escaping this drama anymore because DD joined the reaction. ---- I personally think Haenyeo's are national treasures. Amazing women.

Mae

I’m so happy they are reacting to this 🥹

Ariel

I think Gwanshik would've been 17 and Aesun in 16 (almost 17)

Angel

The Dragon King is a god in Eastern culture who rules the sea.

Helen

Fun fact, IU (main actress) is the singer of one of the songs for the Crash Landing on You soundtrack :)

Koriand Anders

I have to pay a subscription just to watch this show, very excited! ❤️

Stefh

frr IU is goat

Odd Thomas

Love this show, IU is incredible. also missing the action dramas. Can we get vagabond or study group in the circuit? 🙏

Dee

I tried to watch this last year but couldn't finish it as it was too heartbreaking for me. I'll watch a few episodes with you guys and then I'll see how I go. 10 minutes in and I'm already sad 😞

Helen

Just remembered a familiar face will be showing up in this series that was in Crash Landing on You

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

When I heard that Mum was 29 when she died, my reaction was just like DD’s. I was flabbergasted 😳😳😳 She really worked so hard to get old so quickly… 😭

Bri

This is a first time watch for me too! Episode 1 had me crying 3 times lol. I have a 7 year old daughter and the relationship between Ae-Sun and her mom was really pulling at my heartstrings. Episode 2 has me locked in to see where they go from here so I'm glad I started a few weeks late so I can binge a little more.
