The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held each year in Frozen Head State Park in Morgan County, Tennessee, United States. Described as "The Race That Eats Its Young", it is known for its extreme difficulty, purposefully difficult application process, and many strange traditions, having been completed only 26 times by 20 runners since 1995.

Goddamnit, I saw “immortal” and for the briefest moment got excited that it was going to be the finale of the My Immortal reading! Grr.

String Bass Theory

OMG I actually know one of the 8 finishers. Cannot love this episode more, knowing so much about this event already.

Why would anyone do this, to themselves? You ever get an answer from them?

String Bass Theory

Hard to explain. There’s a method in the ultra community. This is one of the hardest things in the world to complete so a challenge that must be taken. It’s definitely type 3 fun. Here’s the fun scale https://www.rei.com/blog/climb/fun-scale Jon finished this after finishing the Appalachian Trail. He’s also a researcher at the South Pole. He’s used to extreme activity and extreme environments. Back in my 30s I was tempted to attempt the Barkley as I had finished a 100 miler. But I have no desire to test myself like that anymore. I hiked 50 miles last weekend and that’s the extent of my extremes now. Why did Hilary climb Everest? It was there.

Oh god, I am so happy they are covering this! I love distance running and respect the hell out of people who run ultras, but yeah it’s insane. The doc on the 2013(?) race was good too.

We can feed everybody

I'm a very poor ultra runner and wanted to try Barkley's. I knew I didn't stand a chance on merits. So, while deployed to Iraq, I got a picture of me with an AK, in Kurdish clothing and running shoes. I wrote a broken English essay saying that my Kurdish grandma could finish and I wanted to prove the glorious prowess of the Kurdish people and compete. I sent in a license plate and the white oxford shirt (that was the entry fee at the time). Laz wrote back something like "While everyone I have consulted ensures me that this is a joke, you do have a spot in this year's run." Unfortunately, my deployment got extended. Stop implying Laz is racist. I think you need a separate category for the times when the writing style of the article is the main story. At least Barkley runners didn't swim miles through shark infested waters with a fishing rod in mouth to get knocked off rocks by waves while fishing for striped bass.

As I Relay Dying, lmao

We can feed everybody

The race isn't related to MLK's assassination. When Laz heard that the assassin only made it 8 miles in 50+ hours, he thought "What a wimp. I can do 100 miles in that time." If anything, it's mocking him for only getting 8 miles. There is nothing racist or even political about this.

We can feed everybody

This isn't toxic masculinity. Ultra sports are the most even playing field between genders, reaching a point where training, planning and determination are more important than muscle mass. Look at open water swimming, where women have more accomplishments than men. These runners are not gym bros. They're athletes who spent decades knocking off endurance challenges and wanted to up the difficulty. Everyone is rooting for the women in the race. Yeah, they probably have more common sense and, as already accomplished runners, decide they don't need to prove anything with rattlesnake bites and shredded skin.

I love your reply!!! Thank you for your insights! Truly amazing and insightful. I do have to argue one point tho… Have you not ever tried standing on a rock in shark infested waters while beating your meat to attract the most dangerous game?!? Yeah, sport fishing is real and honest and did not deserve any scorn! Who cares if Goebbels was the first to cast while balancing on his slippery slope? Just because it was a sport based and commemorating what some people consider an “evil man” does not make it inherently racist! Or I don’t understand the word inherently!! But yeaaaaaa, the promoters could just leave that part out maybe? What’s next? The Jeffrey Dahlmer non-consensual 4 block run to catch your “teammate” and drag them back to the finish line? That would be tough honestly!!

Sammypt

My Immortal doesn’t have a finale… it has a to be continued…. Hopefully!!!! 🙏 🤞

Bloody thing won’t download

He sounds like a bad parody of Hunter S. Thompson.

Does anyone else think that Tom reading children’s books would make for comedy gold? Just imagine “Goodnight Moon” in Tom’s narrator voice. Chef’s kiss.

So for the new Heathleton Bethesda Enwright's Secular Tacular, there's a 2014 documentary about this "event"...Heath? You heard? Visual motion picture of THIS. Bring Cecil's Boston lady and Eli's hillbilly emcee?

Mr Noob jr

I looked on the cognitive dissonance channel. It looks like he had something done on his throat. He had a bandage on it

Peter H.

He had an issue that required surgery, I don’t recall exactly what it was but he talked about it on DoD and Cog Dis and he was in some significant pain. Per today’s cog dis episode he’s recovering well from the surgery though!

Denise Huston

Wait, does the sign of the cross START at the nads? I thought it was head first or shoulders first.

Having seen zero pictures of Laz, I can say with confidence that a man that doesn't know how to cook a chicken thigh is NOT "darkly regal."

So my dad actually knows the Mormon engineer that completed it four times in a row or whatever. They used to work together before the guy retired. Should I try to get an interview 😂
