As a special bonus for all our V4C donors, we promised to force Heath to read an article about why millennials chose not to vote in this year's midterms. And what started as an effort to mess with Heath very quickly became a punishment for all of us.We're putting it here because our patrons also like to hear us suffer.(Note to Patrons: You will be charged with this post as a make good for the uncharged episodes in October. This will be the 2nd of three posts to make up for that discrepancy. Thanks for your continued patience.)

I fucking flew from Central America to vote in 2024 along with someone with a chronic illness. I don’t want to hear any excuses for not voting.

Zach Van Stanley

For chronic illness, it’s actually really common to just say chronic illness if you have something people haven’t heard of. Someone close to me has a connective tissue disorder and a malformation of their skeleton. People don’t get what that means, but they get chronic illness.

Zach Van Stanley

Doing something of moderate intensity can wipe them out for days. But… they plan ahead and vote by mail

String Bass Theory

OMFG, these people TOOK THE TIME to write this shit, but couldn't TAKE THE TIME to register or vote. Heath, get well soon (after reading that)

Petra Khor

Listening to these babies whine about how hard it is to do anything adult-oriented makes me want to give them all a swift kick in the ass. But since I can't do that I guess I'll have to push for an earlier timeline on creating an app that informs voters about their candidates/ballot measures/& voting locations- and syncs with their Google calendars. It's one hell of an undertaking, but maybe my husband and I can help to offset their lack of effort, here's hoping 😁

Jahi Taylor

Just a casual millennial. Who also voted in every election since 2016. We aren't all useless I promise.

Petra Khor

And you can buy stamps at the grocery store, and most gas stations. Wtf people. Jocelyn, while you're getting munchies at the store cause you hit the bong one too many times, how about you get some stamps with those fake cheese-laden nachos and mountain dew? Hmm?

Kaylie Woomer

For the record, millennials do not own stamps. I call my mom and make me send her one the once a decade I mail something

PsychopompGecko

I'm one of the least functional adults on the planet, and this episode made me feel like a goddamn genius.

Akamai

I love Heath. If I was only 30 years younger.

AK

I will go out on a limb and say all these letters are from white cis heteros who are still on their parents’ health plans

Marcus

I fucking love this, and all of you. Merry Christmas, “God Jul” from Norway!

Paul Freelend

It is only the bounds of the physical laws of the universe that prevent me from reaching through my Philips GoGear and throttling my fellow political science students. People who study politics and political systems are convinced the best way to make them more reflective of their desires is to... not vote. Bless their little hearts.

So I remember this article when it came out and I refused to read it. After listening to this episode, I’m certain that I made the right choice. Holy hell.

Michelle C

I certainly hope none of them are black. I’m only 31 and yet my grandparents were born in an America where they weren’t allowed to vote. They got that right after my parents were born. My mother remembers growing up and not being able to use the “public” bathrooms when they traveled because they were “whites only.” I would never not vote because I know how precious and fragile and RECENT that right is. As for the presumably white women who didn’t vote even though it hasn’t quite been a century since they got that right—I can’t explain that one. Their great grandparents would be embarrassed.

Michelle C

Oh and I’m pretty sure Maria meant she would have to take annual leave/vacation time in order to miss work to vote. 🙄

Lizard Brain

Ok, 2 points. Point 1, Texas is a motor-voter state. If Tim has a license, he could have registered to vote by checking a box on his DL application. Point 2, I was diagnosed adhd when it was still considered “getting easily distract.” Funny, but I have never had such a horrible episode that I couldn’t bring myself to go vote, or mail a letter.

April Poff

Two votes! Same here.

April Poff

Thanks for doing this Heath. Great episode.

Edward Grabow

What if all that money spent on getting people to vote would have been spent on purchasing and providing stamps. It sounds like that may have been more effective, according to this. Also learning to positively direct your anger seems to be a skill many of these people lack. For many of these people's illnesses I prescribe 1 diatribe a week.

Emma Crawford

TIL people need stamps to mail their mail-in ballots! (In Arizona, we don't need to put stamps on them!)

Christopher Dalpe

These motherfuckers..... I VOTED FOR OBAMA FROM THE DESERTS OF THE MIDDLE EAST FUCK YOU ALL. Also, Arizona has pre marked envelopes. YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO HAVE A FUCKING STAMP, PUT IT IN THE FUCKING BOX YOU FUCKING FUCK.

Embrace your own void this is mine

Fuck you back Heath, I’m 23. I bought you a bourbon in Sydney and everything (ageist 🤨) On a serious note fuck non-voters!

Winter

I’m listening to the back catalog and I’m glad it isn’t just me that couldn’t have a conversation that made ANY sense or addressed REAL concepts … Jesus fucking Christ … I remember having the ‘both sides have legitimate ideas’ - on everything - but I think I was 18 or 19 before I encountered, you know, the real fucking world …

Crimson Ghost

I waited almost a month after downloading this before listening to it because I was afraid that what the millennials had to say would be stupid. I finally ran out of other podcasts, audiobooks, and rectal exams so I finally sat through it. After my nose stopped bleeding and I could once again recall the faces of my children, I logged in to Patreon just so I could say: GODDAMMIT NON_VOTERS ARE FUCKING STUPID!! HOW DID WE MAKE IT OUT OF THE STONE AGE WITH PEOPLE THAT STUPID WALKING AROUND???

Matthew from Talking About the Big Stuff Podcast

Is there any chance of releasing this publicly? I feel like the CN reaction to the article is more powerful than the article alone. And it will benefit the country. I know I've been in conversations where I've wanted to share it (and maybe that's a good promotion of the show too).

Meghan Florip

Okay to be fair, the post office gives me wicked anxiety. But my solution is to just bring a friend. I also have ADHD but I still vote. I think our education system has failed in motivating people to care about government

Totes Not A Ninja

Still bloody love this shit. Much love from Australia, politics always bums me the fuck out. Regardless of country there are people who’re dumb/uninformed shit heads who end up voting against themselves or not voting as some simple minded idea of principles. I wish your country luck in the mid terms ahead.
