Times Beach is a ghost town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States, 17 miles (27 km) southwest of St. Louis and 2 miles (3 km) east of Eureka. Once home to more than two thousand people, the town was completely evacuated early in 1983 due to TCDD—also known as dioxin—contamination. It was the largest civilian exposure to this compound in the history of the US.

Just a short comment on this episode... The idea of using waste motor oil to settle dust is NOT a particularly brilliant idea- pristine motor oil contains a lot of unpleasant chemicals. And the use of the motor oil inevitably produces a mixture of compounds that probably is unknown - or at least difficult to nail down. What I’m hinting at is that using waste oil with or without dioxins is a matter of degrees when it comes to how poisonous the filler is. Dioxins are really bad, but used motor oil probably contain a lot of really bad stuff too. The thing is that unknown stuff seems soo much more dangerous. Since dioxins is not a word that we are accustomed to, but “motor oil” is more common, we tend to be more worried of dioxins. That is reasonable, but not necessarily correct. We, who are trying to think sceptically, need to consider that it is not of importance if a word is common or unknown. This comment is in no way a critique of the podcast - I love it - but rather a comment that perhaps can be useful for you in sharpening your arguments.

Hey Susanne, I am an Environmental Scientist who specializes in environmental remediation (clean up). While motor oil is bad, most petroleum products you shouldn’t inhale the vapors, it’s not the same bad as dioxins. Not diving into the specifics of what each do to the human body, the big issue is dioxin doesn’t degrade. Petroleum can and will eventually brake down. Time is often used as a long turn cleanup method. Under the right circumstances, this method can be very effective when coupled with source removal. Dioxins are environmentally stable and do not brake down. The most common way to dispose of them today is to burn them at 1500 F.

Oxford Comma is Mandatory

An entire ghost town stand as a testament to why regulations and watchdogs need to exist.
