In religious belief, a saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness, likeness, or closeness to God. However, the use of the term saint depends on the context and denomination. In Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Oriental Orthodox, and Lutheran doctrine, all of their faithful deceased in Heaven are considered to be saints, but some are considered worthy of greater honor or emulation. Official ecclesiastical recognition, and consequently a public cult of veneration, is conferred on some saints through the process of canonization in the Catholic Church or glorification in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Saints started off as an IP theft of all fun pagan deities and then went waaaaay out of hand. Look into emperors etc who were sainted for political reasons for some really crazy stories

OMG!!! A list of Jewish saints as a book would be phenomenal!

Nothing better convinces me that the Catholic Church doesn't believe its shtick more than watching them manufacture "miracles" by people that it would be convenient for them to canonize.

My MIL was so excited to tell me about a local man who is in the sainthood pipeline. Apparently they dug up his grave and he hadn't decayed after 10 years? "They BEAUTIFIED him!" she exclaimed. "Beatified?" I asked. "I've been a Catholic my whole life. I don't need you to tell me how to pronounce beautified." Can't argue with that.

My favorite saint is Josaphat of India, who is basically the Buddha but with "and then he told India about Christianity" replacing the bodi tree stuff. He exists because medieval Europe christianized the story of the Buddha when it arrived, and then made him a saint.
