Aww! I was hoping for more arctic stories! Or mountain climbers or something equal likely to be a disaster.

Fun fact: the germans tried the upward facing gun trick again in ww2. They had a plane with 4 20mm cannons mounted facing up and a bit forward and set it to be triggered by radar. The idea was to fly under bombers and shoot them down at night.

Some of those jokes were real low flying fruit. Just went right under the radar.

Thank you. The break you offer us from this timeline does wonders for my mental health. You all help to stave off the madness with all that you do in the "podcastiverse".

I'm honestly surprised that Tom didn't mention the SR-71 Blackbird he was mentioned about how fast planes have gotten over the years. It's more impressive in both speed and time as it went into service only 63 years after the Wright brothers first flight. And relating to the tactics it used compared to WW1 pilots, when Russian bases detected it flying and launched a surface to air missle, the Blackbird's evasive maneuver was to just fly faster than the missle. Edit: I should consider that the blackbird is a spy plane and not a fighter plane however

Fun fact: the same conventional wisdom also thought the dogfight was gone before the start of the Vietnam war. Which is why the first F4 Phantom fighters DIDN"T HAVE A GUN. Instead relying on terribly unreliable missiles. Dogfighting with humans at the controls is here to stay for at least another 20 years. I absolutely love this topic and hopefully air combat gets returned to again sometime.
