Brad

As an airline pilot I loved this episode!

Oke518

I know this is all jokes but he'll I watch the show mayday you can watch the episodes for free on YouTube he'll either never fly again or you will be at ease

Dexter

It’s pronounced “bomb-bard-ee-ey,” not “bomb-ba-deer”

I listen to an airplane crash true crime-esque podcast...and immediately knew what incident this was. Holy shit. These morons.

Jim Phynn

I will jokingly say that I don’t know how I’m going to die, but it won’t be in a plane crash because I’ve flown Aeroflot and lived to tell the tale.

I‘m listening to this podcast while waiting at the airport, because my flight was cancelled because someone at Hamburg airport didn‘t want to have his carry on searched. Sometimes life‘s irony makes it hard to be an atheist. 🤣

If you want to go down a rabbit hole when it comes to airplane things...look up the history of the flying wing that ends in the B-2 and maybe B-21 Edwards AFB's namesake died in a prototype flying wing. Actually lots of bombers crashed out there. Also, Eli is right, even after test Pilot school i don't know how airplanes work...just how to make sure they keep working

PurplHippo

Oh, and the way we know when an airplane stalls which you described in the episode is just engineering guesswork and they only know the actual speed because test pilots basically scientifically fuck around and find out

Scot Boeringer

Osprey. Look up the safety record of the v-22 Osprey. They eventually worked out the bugs, but it ended up with an R&D cost like ten times the original estimate, and there’s definitely a difference between the number of Osprey which have taken off, and the number which have landed in a non-crash method.

Another ridiculous aviation story is about Taffy Holden. He was a RAF engineer who was working on a Lightning fighter plane that was having some electrical issues. They didn't have a fighter pilot available to sit in the cockpit to do a rolling test on the ground so they used Taffy since he took a pilot's course while in training to become an aircraft engineer. On one test the throttle locked with the afterburners on which mean that Taffy was going down the runway towards a fuel truck and another plane that he barely missed before pulling into the air. He's made it off the ground but now he's flying the fastest and most complicated plane at the time, and because there was only supposed to be a ground test Taffy had no helmet, no canopy, and no ejection seat. The only way for him to get out safely would be to land the plane.
