Rough, raw one tonight-- I'm not sure it's worth posting? I mean, I'm not fishing for compliments! I'm just saying.

Uhhhhhhhhhh.......

COMMENT REQUEST

I want to hear from you, but not about what I wrote in this comic. Please tell me about times you were frozen, had big choices to make, had a blind leap to take. Tell me how that worked out. Or if you're in the middle of one, just tell me about it! Doesn't need to be a success story.

I'm a teacher, and I love my job. I'm. Qualified to teach both Primary school (Australia's equivalent to Elementary school, ages 5-12) and also High school English (ages 13-18). Two years ago I moved from a High school to a primary school, and I quickly realized that primary teaching is much worse for my mental health. I've sought transfer at the yearly transfer round (so you swap at the end of the academic year). I've short listed high schools, and they've shortlisted me, but the Directorate didn't transfer me because I haven't been at my current school long enough. We're midway through the academic year and a job at a high school I like just came up, and I really want to apply, but I'm also really conflicted at the idea of leaving my current class and teaching team midway through the year. I'm also scared I won't succeed and how that would be crushing. So I'm not sure if I should apply or not, or just wait for the next transfer round.

Is there any harm in applying? You don't have to accept it if you are offered it?

Yeah, that's where I've worked my way to since posting this. My current principal is supportive of my applying too, which is nice.

I had a job I liked in the field I had studied for in college, which was going nowhere. Bad pay, no benefits, no chance of advancement. Which is fine in college, but less fine as you get older and need to, like, pay to go to the doctor. Then the recession hit and unemployment rates were huge, so I hung on to that job because it was all I had. When things eased off a few years later, I started looking for work, and it became clear I wasn't going to find a job in my field that checked all the boxes for being good long-term employment. After broadening and broadening my search, I was able to find a totally different job in a totally different field in a totally different city. I felt like a huge sellout for leaving my field of study behind, and spent years dealing with serious impostor syndrome for sneaking in the side door of a profession I knew nothing about. But I've been working for that company for 10 years now. I have good heath coverage, great retirement benefits, and even though I didn't study this field in college...I'm really, really good at it? It's not my passion, but it brings home the income to support me and my family and given us more freedom than lots of people my age. So, it all worked out. My worst enemy throughout was definitely my own brain saying "you can't do this, they're going to find out you don't know about this stuff, they're going to hate you." They did not.
