It literally became a vital plot point/chekov's gun, and even though Sonic is apparently being written to be like a self insert character you're supposed to admire, he still somehow has SO many things wrong with his genitals & digestive system that seem to be noted as his only character flaws

This was my reaction too, but then I thought of a good counter-example. If someone is planning a surprise birthday party for you, but someone let's the cat out of the bag, you will expect to be surprised (i.e. a bunch of people in a dark room saying "surprise!" in unison while turning on the lights).
