Korra wants to fight spirits because in her mind fighting is the Avatar's job, not any of that other stuff. That's also why she thinks she's mastered air bending. To her, fire bending is for fighting, water bending - fighting, air bending - fighting, boyfriend - fighting. It's the only thing she's ever really trained for.
