"The Cloud Minders" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: TOS Season 3

Comments

Hey Bunny pretty good episode -- depicting a form of slavery fighting against upper eshelons trying to break out of a bad situation in life. I think I like Vanna's role in this one - and a great line from Kirk "dig , I said dig" he did prove his point about the adverse affects of the xenite gas - anyway there's one more good ep. then that's it for season 3 - anyway thanks again for the reaction 🩷

I enjoy watching your reaction to classic STTOS. You raised the Droxine-Spock plotline, compared to the Romulan Commander-Spock one from The Enterprise Incident. My take is that Spock maybe has latent Betazoid empathy allowing him to appreciate a very logical being, Droxine, here devoted to art, while Vulcans are devoted to pure science. In the other plot, Spock was intrigued by romulans being distant cousins of Vulcans with Romulan Commander having similar mind meld and courting practices. CM has always been a favorite of mine. The zenite mines have a hard rock aesthetic, from the Gemini photo of the dry river shown from Cloud City to the head-banger culture of the troglytes. Kirk looks great down in the mines. I believe the plan was to observe radio silence while Kirk was returning to the planet, to protect the Enterprise officers from involvement if it went pear shaped. Maybe they just didn't want the communicater beeping at odd times. As a side note, I wonder why the phasers are so loud? Who didn't hear it when Kirk zapped the guard? I agree with you that the plot is weak, but in defense, Vanna is not that concerned with nice things, but wanted changes. Sort of jarring when she goes from the Agony Booth to wearing a short skirt, a new hairdo and room service. Still Vanna is a great character, ruling over the troglytes ! Just one more thing: please consider reacting to Grease 2. Thanks!

Hello Bunny, a little off the topic but as you are approaching the end of your first reactions to TOS, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the enjoyment and pleasure it has been for me to listen to your insightful and often times brilliant analysis of TOS. I have found no one as insightful as you when it comes to reacting to different shows and movies. You are a very special woman and very much appreciated. I am sure your father would be proud of the woman you have become. May God bless you and your family during the Christmas season and in the coming new year.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Yep. Another one that’s very good, but not great. I’ll point out that yet again they rely on contrived time limitto create the narrative tension., resulting in a romantic connection that seems a bit rushed and forced. It’s gotten to the point of being a bad habit with the writers. The characters are interesting though, and the concept is great. It does seem to raise the question of what the Federation was thinking, allowing a society with such a brutally oppressive class structure to join in the first place. Some fine acting by Shatner portraying the effects of the Xenite gas. The creepy look in his eyes as he cradles his phaser is quite effective. All in all, an enjoyable episode that, as you said, could have been great with a few tweaks. One thing I strongly disagree with you on though, Bunny: you totally could pull off wearing Droxine’s dress! Mmm, 😍

Trilogian

There are 2 good eps at least, Dave. I like all three, but Bunny will have decide for herself. Cloud Miners was always a fav of mine. Another big concept and many ideas trying to get in under 50 minutes!

Trilogian

Watching Season 3 along with Bunnytails has given me a lot more appreciation for some eps. They may be a little uneven sometimes, but there are plenty of heavyweights here!

Trilogian

Also rewatching Bunny and Devil in the Dark now. Poor Schmitter.

Hey Trilogian thanks for responding , yeah if Bunny stays on schedule , on Jan. 3rd there's a really good episode coming up --- if you have time a funny story I saw in an interview w/Leonard Nimoy , it was June 1969 the series was over , Leonard Nimoy wanted to get away ,he flew to Montana on vacation, he stayed in a hotel ,a girl from Kansas found out what room he was in - she was all excited , he goes "how did you get my number ?" there were only 3 hotels in the whole town back then --- and someone called him at his house in California ,he said it was nuts , back then his phone no. was in the phone book , he hadn't changed his number yet , didn't think the show would be that popular , he said it was a crazy time --- anyway thanks for your time -- don't mean to bother you ✌️

Once again, the deficits in the writing take a good premise and fail to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Still, I think the strong current of class consciousness keeps this episode from failing completely. I particularly enjoy that the leader of the Disruptors is a strong-willed woman seeking justice for the Troglytes and not one of the random dudes in the red jumpsuits. (Although we never see any other female Troglytes, which gives the impression that Vanna is the only woman working in the mines.) The episode isn't bad enough to qualify as a guilty pleasure for me, but it only escapes that fate by the narrowest of margins. There's also the conversation about Pon Farr between Spock and Droxine. Does anyone remember how long it took Kirk to get Spock to tell him what was making him behave so strangely in "Amok Time"? And Kirk's his best friend! It's rather difficult to believe that Spock would discuss it so casually with someone he just met. No returning actors that I'm aware of, but we did see some familiar furniture: the Agonizer-shaped bed from "The Empath"!

Skyman's Follies

Lots to like about the "Cloud Minders", which David Gerrold (Trouble with Tribbles) had a hand in (as I'm sure someone already mentioned). Lots to think about with the citizens above and citizens below and Droxine's special connection with Spock (and perhaps his appreciation of that). Great visual FX (even the originals were good) with Cloud City, Stratosphere's beaming method, the poor guy falling, and just wonderful set design and costumes. I'm even going to give a shout-out to Al Francis for wonderful lighting, maybe tipping his hat a bit to his old boss Jerry Finnerman with great use of color, dramatic camera push-ins and somehow keeping Bones in soft focus (his leathery skin was notorious on the set) while keeping Spock in sharp relief. I love, as you did, Bunny, Spock's inner monolougue and just the show's pace in general. Is it a dissatisfying ending with no resolution? Not to me. A multi-generational problem is not going to be solved in 53 minutes and Troglytes use of the masks and acknowledgement of the dangerous invisible gasses seems like a game-changer for them. Also, Droxine's acceptance of traveling to the planet surface surely puts a nail in the coffin for her father's exclusionary tactics. I'm satisfied to say this episode stands on its own as a good Season 3 show. 3, 2, 1... and on to next week ; )

Mark Gosine

Good episode. Really. 50 years, and I always referred to this episode as 'The Cloud Miners'. Ya know, the miners on the surface. Even later Bunny mentioned this. When Bunny first stated the episode as 'The Cloud Minders', I thought, 'Ha, she read it wrong'. I checked, and wow, I had it wrong all these years. The cloud minders makes more sense after all. It's like getting a song lyrics wrong and finding out years later what it really was. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" "Hold me closer Tony Danza" "Kicking your cat all over the place" "Wrapped up like a douche, another rumor in the night" and #1 "Excuse me while I kiss this guy"

SuicuneSol

Yeah, Droxine was... wow. It's not just the dress either, but the way it complimented her figure. It's way more navel than I'm used to seeing on 1960s TV. Oh, uh, the episode was kinda interesting too. I think the opening was stronger than the conclusion. And Droxine, despite her beauty, didn't serve much purpose in the episode. Perhaps she was there to serve as a foil for her father? Also, Spock was unusually debonair in this episode, almost out of character. "Extreme feminine beauty is always disturbing, madam."

SuicuneSol

To be fair, Droxine already seemed to know. And I think during Spock's Pon Farr, he was kinda emotionally compromised, which might have made it difficult to talk about in the moment. (ie. It's easier to talk about sex you're not already aroused.)

Greg

I'm late in the conversation so I'll just say this: I've always liked this episode. Yes, it has problems (mostly the same issues that all Season 3 episodes have) and I agree with Bunny it doesn't stick the landing. However, it's great acting and sets, good paced action throughout the episode, and delivers a powerful message. I think it ranks a little above average. I also have always really loved Droxine's silver dress! The other dresses/uniforms in this episode are great also (I don't think Vanna's outfit is short enough!) but the silver dress has always stood out to me. And don't sell yourself short, Bunny, you could totally rock that look. :) For the pictures of looking down at the planet when they are in the cloud city the show uses pictures from manned space flights, to really sell just how high up the city is. Droxine was called by her father at first meeting 'a work of art' which is why Spock said that he had 'never before met a living work of art'. There's actually quite a lot of attraction to Vulcan's through out the shows...I'm thinking of a famous scene right now that's later on, LOL Hard to believe we're almost done with the original series!

bunnytails

Grease 2, eh? Where's this coming from? Well, I didn't know there was a Grease 2 but now I do!

bunnytails

Oh, thank you so much George! I doubt I deserve such high praise, but I'll try to live up to it as best I can!

bunnytails

I wasn't even thinking about the Pon Farr thing, Lee. That is a bit odd! But Suicine also brings up some good points that could explain it.

bunnytails

Wow, that's funny! I actually had to make sure I was reading it correctly at first because I kept thinking it was supposed to be 'miners', but nope!

bunnytails

Yeah, it would have been nice it Droxine felt more important to the episode!

Lee

I don't know. Considering how sheltered she seems, and the way Vulcans guard their secrets from "outworlders," I have a hard time believing Droxine already knew about Pon Farr before meeting Spock, and an even harder time imagining him telling her anything about it in the first place. But it's a canonical episode, so I gotta roll with it. Heavy sigh.

Tony S in Phoenix

I've always enjoyed this episode. I like to think that Droxine was instrumental in bringing the two societies closer together. Both women were so beautiful and the dresses were right up my alley to show off their wonderful physiques. Diana (Droxine) had such a beautiful long stomach that went on forever and was rather busty too 😋😋 She was only 23 here. Charlene was also attractive and only 26 here. Sadly, she passed at 55 from fucking cancer... 😭🤬😭🤬😭🤬 To end with I enjoyed your reaction and in the parlance of today's youth, I "ship" Spock and Droxine 😃😃

TJ

I think Droxine was the key here, and pushed her father down a different path. But you're right, the writers could have done justice to the storyline by spending less time on the "fighting" and more on the positive outcome... I do have one minor bone to pick with this story. It's hard to believe The Federation would accept a divided world that essentially had a caste system... The actresses who played Droxine and Vana were beautiful and talented; both did a great job.
