It's the final episode (for me) of the series!

"All Our Yesterdays" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: TOS Season 3

Comments

Skyman's Follies

OMG! What do we have here? An AMAZING Season 3 episode at the END (or almost the end) of the season? No Gene Coon? No Roddenberry? No Fontana? Freiberger at the helm? Yeah, I think this just shows that, despite this person or that person, the idea of Star Trek, the cast, and the yes, the crew, was strong enough to put up ace episodes despite everything else. And it certainly puts a punctuation on the idea, to me, that S3 was WAY better than it gets credit for and there seems to be some convenient amnesia around the clunkers that exists in Seasons 1 and 2. OK. I'm off the soap box. "All Our Yesterdays" is Spock's "City on the Edge of Forever" and is a fitting end to, not only S3, but to the original series. Glad you liked it, Bunny. And thanks for all the great reactions you gave for this show. Also, great thanks to all the other commentators (Lee, Greg, etc) who made me think twice about these episodes and added such interesting observations and cool facts. I will certainly try to stick around for the Animated series and movies. I'm afraid I won't be tuning into the Star Trek Continues as I just can't get on board with it but I understand why it's being squeezed in there. Cheers everybody : )

Greg

I totally agree with what Skyman said about this episode -- and as one of those who voted for Wrath of Khan way back when, your welcome, LOL I really enjoy this episode -- it's not Top 10 for me, but it's up there, and one of the strongest of Season 3. I really enjoyed it for all the same reasons you did. Someone may correct me on this (please do!) but I don't THINK it was ever said DIRECTLY in the show that Spock was a Vegetarian. (It's been retcon'd since that all Vulcans are). I know it DID say directly that Spock was one in the profiles and press releases that NBC did when the show was on, and it was also strongly implied and hinted at in places that he was. For example, in "City on the Edge of Forever", Kirk says he bought for them to eat 'hard rolls and balgona for himself and vegetables and fruits for Spock'. (I've also heard that Spock was the first major character on American TV who was one, but as with many 'firsts', this is hard to confirm). The only real weaknesses I have with this episode is how rushed it felt (like you, I'd love for this to get a longer treatment!) and the plot was kind of weak and not explained very well. Like how did these people, who hadn't even gone to space, get time travel? And was there a dictator on this world who fled into time after he had taken care of all his enemies? It's really sad to imagine that poor woman stuck in the past in a ice age by herself the rest of her life. A movie I really enjoy is 'Passengers' which while not the greatest movie has that happen to one of the main characters and it's so powerful to think about. If you were forced to go back to some point in Earth's past to live out the rest of your life Bunny (and assume you can take Husbando and Mochi with you), where would you go? I think I'd go back to the 70's so I could live through the end decades of the 20th century again and see all that stuff happen through adult eyes. It's always a shame when something you love comes to a end. Three seasons was good but just not enough. Star Trek Continues is billed as being a 'forth season', as are the great PC games 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites. Most later ST shows were on 7 seasons, which made for a great long run and tons of material. We wouldn't have any of that if it wasn't for this groundbreaking show. As for me, I grew up watching Next Generation so the nostalgia is strongest for that one. However, my parents were teens or adults when the original series was on, and they passed their love of that on to me. I watched a lot of it in syndication, whenever it was on, and while still not my favorite it's a very good show. Finally, when you get around to re-watching Wrath of Khan, I'd suggest the Director's Commentary version as that's also very good and will help add spice to something you've seen.

Skyman's Follies

Thanks for getting the ball rolling with your Wrath of Khan vote and agree, should watch Director's cut (for all the movies, where avail, IMHO). Re: Zarabeth's fate: there is a book, written in the 80s, I believe, called "Yesterday's Son" which reveals that Spock left Zarabeth, not alone, but with a child. Had these episodes been longer, I wish that idea could have been hinted at. Could have been a great twist and a bit more hopeful, if bittersweet, ending

Greg

Oh, sorry for the confusion -- Bunny DID watch the Director's Cut. What I mean is that there's ALSO an option to turn on the Director's Commentary, where the director talks about various things during the movie and it's a good side addition if you've already seen the movie once (or in my case, 30 times, LOL )

Skyman's Follies

ah, got it, thanks, I read it wrong. Yeah, totally agree about the commentary, it's got great stuff in it.

William Terry

Thanks bunny for reintroducing Star Trek TOS. My all time favorite TV series! I think the closest series to it was Wild Wild West, which is great if you like steam punk, and the key to Star Trek TOS for me is the Western genre. Going into a frontier town and restoring law and order is a good analogy to what the five year mission was trying to do, which was to promote liberal humanism throughout the galaxy. The show discussed the drawbacks as well and was quite fair. The pilot with Captain Pike was Gene Roddenberry's intention for the series, which the subsequent series's tried to get back to, but having Shatner playing a Commander with none of the self-doubt of Jeffrey Hunter's captain IMHO made it more modern, with a James Bond feel, allowing for a more versatile concept to emerge, than a straight Western theme. I don't know what the cast and crews conclusions were, for example how Nimoy and Shatner got along, but unfortunately Captain Kirk has gone down in memory as a frat boy, played perfectly in Galaxy Quest, before he gets his comeuppance. I have a few questions about the episode All Our Yesterdays: another Shakespeare influenced episode, like Requiem for Methuselah. There it's The Tempest. Here the quote is "and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death" from MacBeth. And Spock's speech to McCoy back in the library is a tribute to that, like Rayna's I choose speech echoes brave new world. Maybe don't leave the tape to the gulag sitting around the library. I know it's hilarious but mean to Zarabeth the political prisoner. Five thousand years ago was the Pyramids. I think maybe 800,000 years would get you to pre-artist, pre-crafts humans, but most think it's closer to 40,000 years ago.

I've been watching Star Trek since grade school. It helps me be positive , way more than I used to be. I like the Star Trek Continues series. You might as well. DS9 rocks, Voyager is good, and Enterprise really was nice. Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds is pretty interesting. It's always a new angle and that makes a great storyline. The Animated series is well-written. This is a fun episode to wrap it all up and Did I CRUSH on Zarabeth's outfit as a young lad, Ha Ha . My brother and I had his daughters, My nieces watched Star trek too many times growing up. They say it's helped them a little and they love teasing us about the episodes. They know them VERY WELL. Right down to the sound effects. LOL. Star Trek has made me into a well-rounded person. The closest thing to Star Trek was submarines, which I did active duty for some 10 years. Funny how things work. You guys taken care out there. I've taken to watch a few games on twitch now too. OMG what fun. LOL. 😂

Skyman's Follies

Forgot to mention: isn't' this the only TOS ep featuring only Kirk, Spock and McCoy (and add-in Scotty voice) and no supporting cast members?

John DiGiantomasso

I am pleased to say that I have been busy and unable to keep up with your ST TOS reviews. So while you may be done, I still have about half of seasons 2 and 3 to enjoy your reactions. This makes me happy.

Dave Riley

Yes, except in the very open and closing shots, we see no Enterprise at all. It was the only episode that had Kirk, Spock and McCoy and no one else.

Skyman's Follies

cool, I think the only other one that even comes close is "The Empath" but plenty of bridge shots in that one

SuicuneSol

Well, there's no reason discovering time travel needs to come after space travel.

Dave Riley

I have a different take on this episode. For me it's always been down the list a ways. Overall the character story is good, Spock gets to have his "let's get the hell out of here moment" talking to McCoy, at the end of the episode. My problem is the scientific premise is wreckless. How does a civilization develop time travel ability, but not travelling in space? Their science also was advanced enough they knew their sun was getting ready to go nova and destroy their planet. With millions and maybe billions able to ecape the planet's destruction, by going back in time, that leaves open all kinds of disruptions in the time line. Just imagine all those people knowing what future events would be. Also how would travelling in time cause anything to regress? At the start when Spock tried to use his phaser to heat up some rock, it didn't work. The implication was they didn't have phaser technology 5000 years ago. Really? The laws of physics changed in 5000 years? If you have the knowledge of phased energy weapons, it will work whether it was a million years ago, or a million more from now. Spock is Spock, he is still the product of the last 5000 years of Vulcan social, physical and non-emotional development. If they went a million plus years in the future would Spock suddenly turn into some non-corporeal energy life form? Ian Wolfe, Mr Atoz, was last seen in "Bread and Circuses" as one of the modern Romans living in the caves. It wasn't said too clearly but his name was Mr. Atoz as in A to Z, since he was the librarian. Mariette Hartley filmed about 300 commercials with James Garner for Poloroid. They were made over many years, and they worked so well together, people thought they were maried. An example https://youtu.be/komwg8nL2KE?si=KxUzYzpQAis4gqGP Looking forward to the animated series. I went to my first Trek convention during the first season of TAS. I was only about 20 then.

John DiGiantomasso

Great reaction, and an excellent capstone for the series. "Mr. Atoz" is one of the more whimsical names in Star Trek. Did you catch it? He is the keeper of the library that contains ALL history. As in, "everything from A-to-Z." Pretty cool, huh? One other note. So I had been watching Star Trek for YEARS. Daily for several years. I had seen every episode literally dozens of times, starting at about age 8 or so. I THOUGHT I had seen them all. Then one day when I was in high school, I was watching yet another rerun, an entirely new episode that I had never seen came on! It was "The Empath," which is considered by some to be one of the worst episodes of Star Trek. But not for me. It holds a special place in my heart as "the last new episode I ever saw." In the 1970s, Star Trek was dead. All there was were the originslal 79(?) Episodes, some paperback books, plastic models, and a few other trinkets here and there, along with the occasional convention. But then, after Star Wars was a big hit, Paramount decided to do a movie with the original cast. Then there were more movies, The Next Generation. Deep Space 9 (my personal favorite) and more. Bunny - you are blessed. You have a whole new universe of Star Trek to explore, and a whole life to do it. I am jealous of you. Take your time. Savor it. And use it to enrich your life - not interfere with it. All my best...

Lee

I confess that my criticisms of S3 have been rather harsh and that I've enjoyed the bulk of it on this rewatch far more than I ever have. I stand by my statements regarding the overall quality of the writing, though. It is indisputably the least of the three seasons, but not without some very good episodes, and even a couple of great ones. Appreciate the shout-out, Skyman! Your comments have been a source of pleasure and insight for me as well. Like you, I won't be around for Continues, as it is A) not part of any recognized continuity, which makes it little more than real-life fanfic, and 2) its creator has a history of alleged sexual harassment which can be read about on Wikipedia if anyone is so inclined. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Mignogna#Sexual_harassment_allegations_and_legal_issues

SuicuneSol

Did you pick up on it? The librarian Mr. Atoz = Mr. A to Z. My dad quoted this episode all the time. ALL THE TIME. It was almost annoying. But as a result, this one is close to my heart. A lot of people like to mention that Spock regressing really doesn't make sense, but nobody actually knows what time travel is like, so there's no point in discussing it.

Lee

I'm happy to report that Mariette Hartley is, in fact, still alive as of this writing.

Lee

"Yesterday's Son" had a sequel called "Time for Yesterday." Author A.C. Crispin had planned another three books to continue the saga, but circumstances prevented them from being written.

Lee

I always assumed that the time portal wouldn't allow advanced weapons to function in an ancient era. This clearly didn't apply to the medical scanner or tricorder, as Spock had no problem using them to assess McCoy's condition. But I agree regarding Spock's regression. If he had been prepared with the Atavachron, that would have made sense, but as it happened in the episode, it does not. Makes for some good drama, though.

Skyman's Follies

Lee: 100% agree with you: S3 just doesn't have that magic that the first two seasons have and it's been much fun bantering with you guys about it and apologies if I played devil's advocate a bit too hard, LOL. Re: Continues.... also totally agree with you. it seems to me, that if "Continues..." has to be sandwiched in-between Animated Series and the movies, then why not also certain episodes of James Cawley's series and all the OTHER non-canon fan fiction out there? It's just too much of a slippery slope. My recommendation to Bunny: finish all TOS-cast stuff first: original series, animated and movies and THEN continue on to other stuff for whomever wants to see it. This isn't a quality issue to me - some of it was well done - it's about finishing what we started with Shatner, Nimoy and the rest of the TOS cast. I think it's fair to finish those as a group first.

Lee

I would second Skyman's (is it ok to call you Skyman or would you rather your full handle be used? Apologies for not asking sooner!) recommendation to finish all the official original series crew adventures before starting any of the "optional add-ons." I have no problem with Bunny or any other reactors watching the non-canon stuff, but I can't go down that path.

Skyman's Follies

"Wiiiiiiitch! Wiiiiiiiitch!"... that line was always hard to get out of my head, lol. Good point SuicuneSol: if we examine the concepts too closely, kinda loses the fun. I've always thought the idea of the transporter as pure ridiculous fantasy. Even if they invent one someday, then you end up with endless multiple copies of people and also immortality. Just kinda gotta roll with it and enjoy the drama that the sci-fi is intended to generate : )

Lee

An illusion of Scotty and a couple of security guards were seen on the planet. Not as good as the real thing, but at least some actors got paid! LOL

Skyman's Follies

ah, yeah, forgot about that slo-mo illusion!

Skyman's Follies

A lot of it is great: Of Gods and Men, Prelude to Axanar-- basically professionally shot stuff, but yeah, point remains. (Skyman is perfect, thanks Lee!)

Carlos Stevens

WOW! I never caught that. Well done!

Carlos Stevens

Zarabeth = Mariette Hartley... You might want to add the movie "Genisis II" to you schedule. It was a made for TV movie, produced by Gene Roddenberry. Mariette Hartley was one of the main characters. It was supposed to be a pilot movie to kick off a new TV series (never happened). If you want to keep things in order, maybe throw it in after the Cartoon Series, and before the first Star Trek Movie. I'm looking forward to the cartoon series; it's been decades since I've watched it (and to reiterate... the executive producer of the cartoon was D. C. Fontana). There were only two seasons so yeah it will go by fast, but between the cartoon and the reruns of Star Trek it really did more to coalesce Star Trek into it's own genre than many people understand. BTW, D. C. Fontana was the Associate Producer for the Animated Series... and she wrote a couple of episodes under the pen name "Michael Richards." The Way To Eden, and That Which Survives.

dave zink

Really good episode , I like the medieval scene the best , another side of Spock when he falls in love again - anyway hope you got to rest up on "vacay" - Thanks again ,🌹 on to the animated series 📺

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Welcome back, hope you had a nice relaxing hiatus Bunny! Very good episode IMO. Nimoy once again knocks out out of the park when asked to play an “off kilter” version of Spock. His delivery of the line “I don’t like that! I don’t think I ever did and now I’m sure!” still gives me chills. Theres a bit of a potential plot hole in that they say Kirk and co. can go back because they haven’t been altered (or “prepared”) but Spock’s atavistic behavior clearly shows he has. I’m willing to be generous and hand wave that away by saying the atavachron (see what they did there?) is weird alien technology and who knows how that crap works. On to TAS! I won’t spoil anything but I will just say it’s a mixed bag, maybe even more so than season 3 of TOS. I also note that I see you do modern anime reactions, so you’d best be prepared to for some comparatively VERY primitive animation techniques. Just remember it’s early 70s and take it for what it is in that regard. That said I’m quite fond of it, and there is at least one (absolutely superb) episode early on that I’d argue is absolutely vital to the overall lore. I think you’ll enjoy TAS.

Trilogian

Bunnytails is killing me. Softly. I can’t spoil anything, but it’s killing me. BUNNYTAILS (REGARDING SARPEIDON’S ICE AGE DISK): “Why is this even an option?” Honestly. Thank you, thank you for giving me a new perspective on my oldest TV friend. You’re still in for some great stuff, TAS, Star Trek Continues, the movies, and the other shows (some who like them better than TOS. Not me, tho). Its been wonderful, and I’ve enjoyed watching with you many times!

Greg

I've always believed it's there (and an option) cause that dictator (whose name I can't recall right now) sent at least one person there to exile them. It was just Bones bad luck to actually PICK the damn thing out of what must be thousands of disks.

Trilogian

Agreed, Greg! I was more commenting on the fact that Bunnytails once again addressed something I never thought of on her first watch. Dunno how many times I’ve seen these episodes, but she has often made me think or laugh or feel about them differently!

bunnytails

I am not sure I know enough about history to adequately answer when I would go to. I couldn't imagine giving up all the comforts of modern life and women had more limited rights and options. So more recent would be best. I would not want to live through 2020 again. And assuming I would not live past 100 years old, I could go back to 1958. 1948 might also be a decent pick in order to prevent re-living 9/11. It's also right after WW2.

bunnytails

You're very welcome Will. And thanks for joining me for this series!

bunnytails

I do have a lot of fun on Twitch, and I am happy to know others can too! Sometimes there are great challenges, and sometimes there is just a really good story to experience. But hopefully, there is ALWAYS good fun just hanging out together. TOS has been wonderful and I can't wait to dive into something new!

bunnytails

Those points you brought up also didn't make sense to me, but somewhere in season 1 I began to realize that if I bothered with things making sense then I would have a rough time with the series. I am also excited for The Animated Series. I think it will go by pretty quickly!

bunnytails

I did not notice the A to Z, but I do quite like that! I will certainly enjoy the rest of my time with future Star Trek stuff. I don't know if I will ever run out of content at this rate! hehe

bunnytails

Interesting! I will add Genesis II to my list. No promises on when/if I will watch it though.

bunnytails

I had a good vacay, thanks! It was pretty tough not to edit, though!

Dave Riley

You are absolutely correct! It’s entertainment… enjoy. But it can be entertaining to have a bit of an insightful discussion, on those “what about things” too.

bunnytails

Thanks! It's great to be back! While I do enjoy some beautiful animation (Akira, Studio Ghibli), the quality of animation will always be secondary to the writing. :)

bunnytails

I am super glad to hear that! I hope to continue to give fresh perspectives!

Bunny: "Cool set..." as she is looking at a frozen wasteland. You're killing me girl! 🤣🤣🤣 Ah, the very beautiful Mariettte Hartley 🥰🥰🥰. It is so much better watching her on a 4k 65" tv than the dinky 19" we had in 1969. She has beautiful eyes and the rest of her is very nice too as is evident by her fantastic outfit showcasing her fabulous stomach and beautifully toned legs 🤪🤪. It's no wonder stone age (human timeline) Spock fell for her. Bunny and I had the simultaneous thought about Bones, why isn't he reverting also? But wasn't he really? Stone age humans and McCoy didn't have as big of a change in demeanor as Vulcans did. And he was showing quite a bit of emotion and anger attacking Zarabeth. I also agree you should watch Genesis II, besides Marriette being in it and showing her beautiful stomach some more, I really enjoy the story. You will also be introduced to Roddenberry's favorite character name, Dylan Hunt, which he uses at least 3 times that I can remember at the moment. Well, I have taken up too much of y'alls time. Thanks for the ride down memory lane and GREAT reactions Bunnytails. I didn't watch the animated series back then so doubt that I will now. Catch you on down the line.

bunnytails

The Animated Series is great. Promise me you'll at least check out episodes 2 and 5 with me. You won't regret it :)
