"More Troubles, More Tribbles" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Comments

Greg

Watching Bunny's reactions to this episode always enhances the fun of doing a watch with her, but thanks to her laughter and amusement I found myself doing even more of that then she was, LOL I really like this episode and glad they made a follow up episode to one of my favorite TOS episodes. Good mix of action and humor, and for once the shorter running time doesn't really hurt the overall quality all that much. The same person who wrote "The Trouble With Tribbles" wrote this script as well. Per Wikipedia: Originally pitched as a third season follow up to "The Trouble with Tribbles" for Star Trek: The Original Series, the idea was scrapped under the tenure of producer Fred Freiberger, who was not a fan of the original episode and did not want to produce comedy episodes. In 1973, Gerrold and Star Trek writer D. C. Fontana were appearing on the Star Trek convention circuit together. Fontana was executive producer of the new Star Trek: The Animated Series; Gerrold offered to write an episode and Fontana responded that she was interested in a tribble sequel. The episode does a great job of re-visting the Tribbles without re-hashing the old tropes; these Tribbles are treated so they don't reproduce but they do still get fat, and that would also cause a huge problem due to how much they eat. I suspect even the 'treated' Tribbles by the time that McCoy was done with them STILL eat a lot, so Tribbles are still a lot more 'trouble' then they are worth. (see what I did there? LOL) The callbacks to the first Tribbles episode was great though, there was some really good dialogue in this one, the same Klingon captain as before, and added in the elements of a new Klingon weapon and the need to protect robot ships that all come together for a really fun episode. Sherman's Planet was supposed to be up for grabs as to which civilization could do a better job colonizing it. I'm guessing due to the Klingon interference it was decided to award the planet to the Federation, who are trying to move in additional grain to help support it and take care of the plague that is happening on there. The really only thing I dislike about this episode is, why are the Tribbles all pink here, when in the TOS episode they were different colors?

Lee

The frequent use of pink in inappropriate places on TAS has been blamed on two things historically: one, the alleged colorblindness of director Hal Sutherland, and B, the man who actually assigned color to the images, Irv Kaplan. According to storyboard artist/character designer Bob Kline, "Pink equals Irv Kaplan" and "(Kaplan) wasn't listening to anyone else when he picked colors or anything." So there's an answer or two for you. (Sourced from Memory Alpha, of course.)

Bunny definitely brings a new dimension to watching Star Trek in general, and this series in particular. Sometimes I get a wee bit annoyed at the sameness of the animation or the color selection (as Greg observed, pink was an odd choice for tribbles), or even the fact that a lot of the dialogue is provided by James Doohan, and once you know this, you can't unhear it. (Admittedly, he is occasionally brilliant with his choices; I don't want anyone to think I don't appreciate the man who played Scotty under any circumstances.) But seeing Bunny's reactions makes everything better. I suspect her presence is largely responsible for my renewed enthusiasm for the third season. LOL Now for a bit of madness. You guys have read my comments, you know what I'm like. This time, I may be going a bit too far, but I hope you'll hear me out: It's no longer accurate to call this "The Animated Series." As of 2025, there are a total of three animated series in the franchise (Lower Decks and Prodigy are the others), so the use of the definite article is just plain wrong. Furthermore, when Roddenberry agreed to the production of an animated series, he continued to call it Star Trek because he saw it as a continuation of TOS. So I suggest referring to it as "Star Trek (1973)." I hope at least a few of you are open to this. (Hey, Abrams' first effort at a Trek film has always been called "Star Trek (2009)," so there is precedent.) I will freely admit that TAS is probably always going to be the abbreviation in use, but ST73 only takes one more character, and it has the benefit of being factually correct. Thank you for attending my TED talk. LOL

Great reacts! I join bunny in the standing o! Kudos to the writing, I think it was the same one on TOS, David Gerrold, and the voices, who ace the jokes. Doesn't call back all the classics, the post bar fight blame scene I would have liked a callback. Also nobody can pronounce "Quadro triticale" which is hilarious. I noticed in the over the shoulder perspective you can see a moustache on the guy operating the transporter, meaning it wasn't Scotty, it was Lt. Kyle. Thanks bunny!

Lee

According to the closed captions, the grain in the robot ships was actually quintotriticale, so that had to have added an extra degree of difficulty in saying it. (Plus it's one better than quadrotriticale.)

William Terry

Sorry; I thought I caught Spock in a mistake, my 😞

Carlos Stevens

You better be watchin' you some 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Carlos Stevens

In TOS it was "quadro-tritacale" In the AS it's "quinta-tritacale." FYI, tritacale is a real thing... and yes... it's a form of wheat.

OMG, Bunny. I think you laughed too much at this one. It was funny and fun. Glad you finished Childhoods End too. I like your Retro 70's colorful Saturday Morning Cartoon shirt. If you flashback on youtube for the trailers you'll see. 🥹. Bravo! 🫡. Assured, they'll be no tribble at all. 😆. EDIT... I forgot to mention. The writer,David Gerrold has his own Tribble store. tribbletoys.com I bought a few last year , One for my granddaughter, she LOVES it, It purrs and shreiks. I have a couple, three around here and not in the grain. 🖖

Hey Bunny great reviews as always. I heard you saying that after the Animated Series you were going to be reacting to Star Trek Continues. I absolutely cannot wait for you to review these. I think you are going to have a great time! I don't want to give anything away and I hope nobody else does either here. Here's a short that they produced before they started. I don't know if you seen it already. If you have just disregard. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/Qrw6kVkjf1w?feature=shared

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Another one that just a lot of fun. It’s great that they followed up on what some of the “next steps” of an ecological problem like the tribes would entail. Genetically engineering to “fix” the problem is logical but this episode does a great job of showing it a funny, lighthearted way that it can potentially open up a new can of worms. I did always have the thought in the back of my head that there was something missing about this episode, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I think now after watching your reaction that it’s that it could’ve used more actual interaction between the humans and the tribbles themselves. A nice little scene with Uhura would’ve been perfect for that. I also think that they dismissed the Klingon weapon a little too easily at the end. I can think of plenty of ways that the Klingons could make use of it even with the power drain, especially if they had groups of ships attacking to support the one that’s using the new weapon. But that’s a nit pick. Glad you loved Childhoods End. As I said, there are other Clarke novels I personally prefer but I know exactly what you mean about the ending. Very bittersweet. And mind bending big cosmic reveals are DEFINITELY at the heart of Clarke’s style as you will see if you ever get around to 2001. I do think it’s best to watch the movie before reading the book. Both are masterpieces, but I think it’s best to experience the grandness of the visual awe and mystery before getting into the more detailed narrative. LATE EDIT: hey Bunny, don’t know if you’ll see this, but I was just casually scrolling through some of the comments on your YouTube release of turnabout intruder. Someone there recommended Larry Nivins “Ringworld”. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that earlier, but ifyou’re looking for another sci-fi classic to start that one might be a good one to do now for… reasons.

Mark Gosine

Anyone else notice that Chekov's helm replacement has three arms?

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Yup. His name is Arex. You get a few chances to see it clearer in later episodes when he’s doing things other than sitting at his station.

John DiGiantomasso

You need to watch 2001 as an absolute sci-fi classic, and 2010 to provide some insight to the tale. My favorite Clarke book was Rendesvous With Rama.

bunnytails

Ah! I didn’t realize it was the same Klingon captain!

bunnytails

Hmm. I think you might be going a bit too far with this one! On Paramount Plus’ website it is titled “The Animated Series” and nowhere in the comments has anyone referred to it as any differently. I don’t think it will catch on. In fact, I think many in my audience would be quite angry! I don’t think I’d enjoy more irritated comments on top of the many I already get. 😭

bunnytails

Ah! No wonder I had trouble with remembering the pronunciation! It’s different than last time!

bunnytails

Glad you’ve enjoyed along with me! And thanks for sharing the link! I might need to get me a tribble or two!

bunnytails

I’d not seen that! Thanks for sharing 🙂

bunnytails

I’ll make a note of the novel, thank you!

bunnytails

I’ll do 2001 at my next chance! Many people asking for it 😁

Lee

I don't expect Paramount to ever change a series title, although technically "The Animated Series" is only the designation they're using to differentiate it from TOS; both shows were originally just "Star Trek." For marketing purposes, they obviously have to call it something else. My proposal goes off of "Star Trek (2009)," the Abrams' film which had no subtitle to separate it from any of the other movies. It's just something for people to think about. I didn't suggest it with any expectation that it would catch on, but it's bothered me since the other animated shows came into being. However, I did preface my proposal with the warning that it was madness and probably going too far. So at least I'm self-aware, if nothing else. LOL
