"The Infinite Vulcan" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Mike Collins

Just a quick BTW - Walter Koenig pronounces his last name "KAY-nig"

Skyman's Follies

interesting episode. Good point, Bunny: looks like Koenig used some of his script to give some highlights to his favorite cast mate, Takei, (Koenig was one of those in attendance at Takei's wedding many years later). Also of note: Koenig references the "Kzinti". No spoilers but we'll hear of them again. The Kzin are an alien race from ANOTHER sci-fi series by Larry Niven called "Ringworld". Those beings are not only in that series but Niven brought them over for his own TAS script which we will see later. Re: the large beings, in the mid-70s, a feature film Star Trek was being bandied about by Paramount and Gene Roddenberry right after TAS was finished. One of these attempts would be called Star Trek: Planet of the Titans and was to be directed by Phillip Kaufman (later director of Best Picture 1983, The Right Stuff). I believe the Titans were another Greek spin off and may have had large beings in it (similar to Apollo) but then again they might have been regular sized and just possessing god-like powers. We'll never know because the attempt was abandoned, BUT, there is some cool pre-vis artwork out there by none other than Ralph McQuarrie (Star Wars) that has some pre "Motion Picture" renderings of the Enterprise, later to be used by Star Trek: Discovery.

I always liked this episode, but it's weird! And this is perhaps the most divisive episode of TAS -- you see opinions ranging anywhere from best episode to worst episode. To add on to what has been said -- Once again the Wikipedia article for this one is worth reading. In short -- Walter didn't find out that he was being left off the cast for TAS due to money reasons until someone told him at a con! He would admit later on to feeling hurt by that decision, and that's probably why Roddenberry decided to order a script from Walter after having read a rough draft that Fontana passed on to him. However, Walter found the whole process horrible, due to interference from Roddenberry (the script went through TEN rewrites!) and although he found the final result 'OK', he turned down an offer from Fontana to submit another script. The callbacks to past Star Trek episodes again such as the Eugenics Wars are great, and again we see the power of animation on full display here as we see things that could not have has as easily been done in live action. Once again Doohan voices guess characters here (in the form of the doctor) and there's some really creative banter between Spock One and Two and Spock and Kirk and Kirk and Sulu. It's kind of a silly episode, but a cool idea. Your comments again are spot on Bunny, especially the one about how while the Federation may be at peace, there's still plenty of conflict and war in the galaxy. One of my favorite Star Trek games has the following line in it - 'The Federation does not start wars but we will finish them' which is very true.

😍 Happy Valentine's day! As bunny slips into something more comfortable at the beginning, we watch an offbeat episode, even for TAS. Seems like whenever the landing party beams down they find a laboratory and missile launchers. Bunny pronounced raison d'etre correctly as far as I know. It's wrong to not pronounce the "r" like "fwancais" so she's got that right IMHO. I think the inscrutable thing goes back to early modern views of people from Asia being hard to understand and devious. Kirk then makes up the word scrutable to mean the opposite. It's funny!! Good Uhura/Scotty scenes. Thanks bunny!

No spoilers, but this episode had a callback in a modern Trek series, which I found delightful. It probably irritated people that have an issue with animated Trek, but that's okay too. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations has to include those who don't appreciate good things. And there's always the chance their perspective could change. Rewatches are very good for that reason alone.

Skyman's Follies

ah, the good 'ol IDIC from "Is There In Truth No Beauty?".... great point about the rewatches, Lee...

Carlos Stevens

Alas... Chekov... they did him dirty in the Animated Series... but at least he got to write an episode. (and one of the best episodes of AS I must say).

Carlos Stevens

Oh wow... Caniculus mentioned.... The Kazenti. I just learned something today.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

This one’ s pretty good but has a few problems. all the artwork and designs are beautiful and as always, the animation seems a little off. It’s hard to tell what’s going on with the action in places. Like you, Bunny, I find it weirdly hilarious that from now on there’s always going to be another 50 foot tall Spockout there somewhere. It’s best if, for example, one doesn’t dwell on that while trying to watch the wrath of Khan. 😝 Also, first mention of the Kzinti. Facinating.

When Nimoy died I used the IDIC as my avatar pic across all my social media for 3 months in tribute

I love to hear that Koenig and Takei were close friends outside of the show!

Carlos Stevens

heh... I just learned something today.... This episode was the first mention of the Kzinti. I'm guessing Walter Koening already knew that Larry Niven was going to write an episode.

Carlos Stevens

The word "Inscrutable" reminds me of the HBO series "Dead Like Me." I would love it if Bunny would do a reaction of that series. Can I get a few upvotes for this???

Carlos Stevens

I am so going to lobby for Dead Like Me when Bunny asks for suggestions.
