"The Eye of the Beholder" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

I agree with Bunny I think this is a good episode. I didn't like it as MUCH as she did, but it's enjoyable episode with some great visual effects (what animation can do here is really show off well in this episode!) and a good message. The ideas in this episode are not original -- we've seen them in TOS already -- and there's some big plot holes, like how that baby alien was able to communicate so well with Scotty when the adults could not! But it all comes together for a good fun time. David Harmon, the writer of this script, also worked on the original Star Trek series, writing the episode "The Deadly Years" and co-writing "A Piece of the Action" with Gene L. Coon. So again someone who 'got' Star Trek. Looking at the reviews of this episode, it doesn't seem very popular for numerous reasons. I don't think the episode is THAT bad, maybe not a top one for TAS but it's still a decent episode. And I agree Bunny, we've not seen a 'bad' episode of the animated series yet. Some 'meh' episodes, but that's about as low as it's gotten.

A good episode. Like the three new characters from the science team. There's some great storytelling, sort of like TOS, but like bunny observed, tweaked in interesting ways. The family reminded me of the gauntlet runners in Metaphor: Fantasio. RPG would have been a profitable vein to mine for future episodes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder is an ancient saying, which is not exactly the truth, as standards of beauty are not completely subjective. I think what they mean here is intelligence and civilization are subjective. I agree with the point Bunny makes that her experience is that at a certain level mental powers improve more slowly. It's a common metaphor in ST that x is as far above the Federation is the Federation is above ameobas. IMHO it's like when the Romans in Gladiator went against the Germans and found that while they were better, they weren't that much better than the Germans and couldn't afford a bad leader. The odd thing here is the almost Victorian outlook of the slug people towards less telepathic species for amusement on a Sunday outing. Nothing convinces them until junior gets a look at the Enterprise! Jr is the best character, protective of its communicator and orders everyone off the bridge but Scotty while it looks at the new stuff.

Bunny theorized that the child's mental processes hadn't advanced to the level of its parents, and thus was capable of telepathically communicating with Scotty. Which makes sense to me, so it's in my headcanon, too. LOL

Skyman's Follies

Verrrrrry cool episode. I kinda like how we DONT know exactly why the creatures imprisoned the crew... it illustrates the idea how far above their intelligence was over humans ... like, we SHOULDN'T know their motivations because we couldn't understand them. Nice one.

Considering how often the Enterprise encountered near-omnipotent species on TOS, I prefer seeing them meeting aliens that are still advanced by comparison, but not nearly so godlike. I quite like this episode. Given the different species the Lactrans (aka slug elephants) have collected, they must have warp-capable starships. It's a shame we didn't see any in orbit; then again, perhaps they only have the one, and it was away looking for new specimens. I seem to recall one of the Pocket Books TOS novels having a similar species "adopt" Enterprise crew members, but I can't determine which one it was from the books listed at Memory Alpha. If anyone else can provide the name of the book (or its author), I'd be very grateful.

Wow. Good episode. Pacing, story, execution. I'm impressed.

The Lactrans are gentle and somehow cute. Strange that such an advanced species would abduct and display other beings in such a flea circus fashion, but once again, Kirk (and Scotty) show them an alternative. Once again, backgrounds and creature designs are amazing!

...aaaaaaannnnnndddd.... Space Slugs!

Agreed, visually this is one of my favorite episodes!
